CPHS Basketball: Boys advance to Area finals with 67-63 win over Bartlesville

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys basketball team (18-7) came away with a 67-63 win over No. 20 Bartlesville High School (9-16) in a very gritty matchup that came down to the final few seconds of the first-round Area playoffs.

The game was very back and forth from the start with both teams trading baskets much of the first quarter. Cale Savage started the scoring off with a pair of free throws followed by seven straight points by the Bruins. Bruin guards Tayo Dina and Jaylin Oliver got on the board early and often for their squad, leading the game in scoring with 25 and 21 points respectively.

Colt Savage drained a pair of his own free throws and Matthew Price tied the game with a three pointer. Davon Richardson scored five points in the quarter for the Sandites, but the Bruins held the lead 17-16 after a deep buzzer-beater three from Oliver. 

The Sandites began to pull away in the second quarter, with Cale Savage scoring six of his team-high, career-high fourteen points in the period. Two three-pointers by Kendrick Williams and a pair of free throws by Cole Durkee sealed a seven-point lead at the break for Sand Springs.  

The third quarter continued the trend of the Sandites pulling away with balanced team scoring, despite Oliver and Dina doing everything they could to keep their squad in the game scoring thirteen of the sixteen Bruin points in the stanza.  

Boasting an eleven-point lead as the final quarter began, a basket by Josh Minney and a Durkee free throw pushed the lead to the largest of the game at fourteen. Then Bartlesville began chipping away, applying a full court press to force a multitude of Sandite turnovers. With just 9.8 seconds left the Bruins had cut the lead to 3, but missed their opportunity to tie the game, and a Cale Savage free throw sealed the victory for Sand Springs.  

The Sandites will return to action Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. when they play No. 8 Owasso (21-5) at Tulsa Memorial High School. The winning team will advance to the State Tournament, while the loser will end their season. The Sandites trumped the Rams 72-64 in December, but Owasso repaid the loss 97-77 in February.

CPHS Soccer: Sandites split with East Central, girls win 6-0 shutout

The Charles Page High School girls' soccer team kicked off the season with a bang Friday night at Memorial Stadium, routing East Central High School 6-0 in a non-district match, while the boys fell 3-2 in a second-half thriller.

The girls got off to a slow start, but kept the action on the Cardinals’ side of the field for the most part, despite playing into a steady headwind. Once they got going they were hard to stop, however. Kylie Taylor notched the first goal at 14:18 then Julia Wolf booted the second at 26:12. Wolf nearly had another a minute later but etched it just a foot or two wide.

Emma Peak was next in on the scoring action sending one in on a corner kick at 28:25. Katie Daniels bounced one in off the goalie at 30:36. Daniels took another shot on goal a minute later but this time the keeper was ready for the save.

Morgan Poletek kicked off the second half with a goal at 43:53, then Wolf hit her second at 58:27. 

The East Central boys were a whole different beast, keeping the Sandites on their toes with a great pass game and aggressive offense. 

The Cardinals appeared to score at 21:40 but the shooter was called offsides. Gustavo Saldana had an on-goal shot at 27:00 but the keeper handily picked it out of the air. Hector Dimas scored the lone goal of the first half at 30:29.

Xander Quiroga had a spectacular save at 54:39, then Luke Jeffus tied it up at 70:16. Jose Lucio reclaimed the Cardinal lead at 74:46, Jeffus tied it again at 77:06, then Richard Rosales clinched the visitors' win with forty seconds remaining. 

Both Sand Springs teams will return to action Tuesday, March 6th with a non-district home game against Tulsa Memorial High School. The Lady Charges started the season with an 8-0 shutout by Claremore, while the boys' team fell 4-3. The girls will kick off varsity action at 6:00 p.m. followed by the boys at 8:00. 

CPHS Baseball: Sandites fall 7-5 to Coweta in season-opener

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team dropped its season-opener Thursday evening, falling 7-5 in a non-district game at Coweta. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning and were 7-1 after four innings before the Sandites made a comeback.

Coweta scored two on the first hit of the game as Seth Marrujo homered in Logan Vaughan. JD Geneva singled and courtesy runner Cash Singleton scored on an error soon after.

Sand Springs got their feet wet in the second inning with doubles from Riley Rutledge and Tyler Ash, the latter scoring the former. 

The home team jumped further out front in the third thanks to a pair of walks, four singles, and an error. Ty Decker, Reed Gaddy, and Jesse McDermott all singled on loaded bases for the 6-1 advantage. Reid Stockman scored the Tigers' final run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Geneva.

Ty Steelman got the Sandites back on track in the fifth, singling in Malachi Burks, then scored on a sacrifice by Rutledge. Cal Watkins and Steelman drew walks to start the sixth. Braden Askew doubled in Watkins and Steelman scored on a single from Rutledge for the final runs of the game.

Brock Youngblood (0-1, 6-9) got the start and the loss on the mound, giving up five hits and three walks with one strikeout over two innings. Steelman took over and pitched four strikeouts and two walks in three innings, while Ash pitched cleanup. 

The Sandites will look to get in the win column Saturday in their home debut against Midwest City at 1:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites headed to State after win over undefeated Bartlesville

CLAREMORE - The undefeated Class 6A No. 2 ranked Bartlesville High School Girls' Basketball team (25-1) is undefeated no more. The Sand Springs Sandites repaid a 53-42 regular season loss with a 52-40 Area Championship win to clinch their spot on the State Tournament bracket.

No. 13 Charles Page High School (18-7) will play the OSSAA 6A State Tournament for the second-straight year after topping the Frontier Valley Conference Champions. Bartlesville will have to beat the winner of No. 11 Norman North (17-8) vs. No. 14 Shawnee (21-4) Saturday afternoon at Daniel Webster High School if they want to make the State Tournament. 

It took Bartlesville half a minute to find a lane on their opening drive. They didn’t find the basket, however, and Destiny Johnson took the rebound to the house. The Bruins missed three field goal attempts and gave up two free throws to Jacie Taber before finding their rhythm with layups from Jena Williams and Erin Shoemaker.

Johnson made two more layups for an 8-4 lead before Avery Allen hit the first three-pointer of the night. Taber hit another from the charity stripe and Holly Kersgieter made a two for an 11-7 lead before Shoemaker completed a three-point play to close the first quarter.

Isabella Regalado and Shoemaker traded threes to start the second period. Regalado went to the line and made one free throw, then Johnson rebounded the second for a 17-14 advantage. Williams made a free throw, then Shoemaker and Williams hit back-to-back threes for the first Bruin lead of the game with two minutes left on the half. Bartlesville held a 24-19 lead to end the period.

The Sandites were explosive in the second half, kicking things off with a three-point play from Kersgieter. Destiny Harris made a three, then the Sandites went on a six-point run. Shoemaker iced another three then Regalado scored five and Kersgieter made three more for the biggest lead of the game at 36-30 before Vivian Culver scored three to end the period.

The Bruins battled back early in the fourth to tie it at 39-39, but Sand Springs ran away with a ten-point streak from there for a double-digit lead with 42 seconds left. 

Kersgieter, a University of Kansas-committed junior, led all scorers with nineteen points, followed by Johnson with twelve, Regalado with eleven, and Taber with eight. Shoemaker led the Bruins with eighteen and Williams contributed thirteen. Johnson had a double-double with twelve rebounds.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites top Jenks 55-47, fall 70-56 to Putnam City West at Regionals

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team (17-7) split wins at the Regional Tournament, topping Jenks 55-47 before falling 70-56 to the host team from No. 7 Putnam City West (19-5).

The Sandite post-season is still alive, but the Regional loss made it a lot tougher. Had they defeated the Patriots, they would only have to win one more game to make it to the State Tournament. Now they'll have to get past No. 20 Bartlesville (9-16) and the loser of No. 8 Owasso (21-4) vs. No. 4 Union (21-4). The first Area playoff game will be Friday at 8:00 p.m. at Tulsa Memorial High School.

Then-unranked Bartlesville upset the Sandites 59-52 last month. Sand Springs split wins with Owasso, winning 72-64 in December but falling 97-77 earlier this month. Union won both regular-season meetings with the Sandites, 60-45 in December and 53-34 a few weeks ago. 

Putnam West will play No. 1 Broken Arrow (23-2) Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Bixby High School. If they win they'll punch their ticket to State. A loss will pit them against the winner of No. 9 Norman (15-7) vs. No. 18 Westmoore (13-12).

On Saturday the Sandites overcame a rough start against the Trojans (8-16), winning by eight after trailing by eight in the first quarter. The Sandites went on a seven-point run to close the half with a 29-27 lead and won each of the next two periods as well. Senior University of Central Oklahoma-commit Colt Savage scored a game-high 25 points, followed by sophomore standout Davon Richardson with eighteen and brother Cale Savage with ten.

Monday night was a lot closer than the final score indicated. Despite falling by fourteen points, the Sandites only trailed by one after the third quarter. Putnam led 17-16 after the first and 37-29 at halftime, but the Sandites battled back in the third to win 19-12. 

Greg Thomas scored double-digits in the final stanza with three threes and a free throw to single-handedly outscore the whole Sandite team after a quiet game with only two points prior to that quarter. 

Colt Savage, who led all scorers with sixteen points over the first three quarters, came up with only two in the final stretch. The Sandites went one-of-six on crucial free throws in that period.

Savage's eighteen was closely followed by Richardson with twelve and Cole Durkee with eleven.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites win Regional Championship 60-51 over Bixby

Third quarters haven't been kind to the Sand Springs Lady Sandites this season, and Monday night was no exception. But after blowing an eight-point halftime lead against the Lady Spartans, they doubled down and finished strong, winning their Regional Tournament bracket 60-51 over Class 6A No. 10 ranked Bixby (18-8).

The No. 13 Charles Page High School girls' basketball team improved to 17-7 and advanced to the Area playoffs. They will travel to Claremore Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to take on undefeated Frontier Valley Conference Champion, No. 2 Bartlesville (25-0).

University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter, and Destiny Johnson, who also has Division One offers, recorded a team-high nineteen points apiece for the Lady Sandites, while freshman standout Landry Williams posted a game-high 23 for the host team. 

Maddie Bittle scored first, stealing the Sandites’ opening possession. Jacie Taber responded, then both teams traded turnovers before Johnson made a three-point play. Williams and Isabella Regalado traded threes and the Sandites went on a seven-point run for a 12-5 lead. The Spartans wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and rattled off eight of their own. Three-pointers from Williams and Dariann Myles gave the host team a 13-12 advantage to close the first period.

Sarah Tyree kicked off the second period with two, Holly Kersgieter retaliated, then Tyree hit a pair of free throws. Taber and Johnson made back-to-back threes and the Sandites took a 20-17 lead. Kersgieter went on a six point run for the Sandites with three steals to make it 29-20 before Tyree hit a three. Johnson scored a free throw to close the half 30-23.

The Spartans used lethal three-point accuracy to chip away at their deficit, ultimately taking the lead with back-to-back deep balls from Williams in the third period. Johnson scored on a throw in from Kersgieter with a second left to tie it at 42-all.

The basket spit out a jump shot from Johnson in the final stanza, then Williams hit another three to retake the lead. Bree Berge scored on a putback. Myles, Madison Burris, and Bittle exchanged threes, then Kersgieter went on a five point run to jump out front once and for all.

Jacie Taber missed most of the third and fourth quarters after getting into foul trouble, but came back in for a steal and a layup to make it 54-51. It was all desperation fouls from there, and unfortunately for the Spartans the Sandites were 86% from the charity stripe, finishing the game on a thirteen-point streak.

The win gives Sand Springs a little bit of security as they head to the next round of the playoffs. If they lose to Bartlesville, they will get a redemption match against the winner of No. 11 Norman North (17-8) vs. No. 14 Shawnee (21-4). Bixby will have a harder path to the State Tournament, needing to win two more games. First they will play No. 16 Deer Creek (16-9), and if they win that game they will play the loser of No. 3 Owasso (22-3) vs. No. 5 Westmoore (21-4).
