The annual Charles Page High School Powderpuff Football games were held on a rainy Saturday night at Memorial Stadium as a fundraiser for Senior Celebration. For the second year in a row, it was the Class of 2017 with the victory.

The seniors (2-1) dubbed themselves the "Pink Ladies" and avenged a round-robin loss to the sophomore "Saucemores" (2-1) with a 6-0 win in their finals rematch.

The Saucemores were the dominant force through the round-robin play, play winning both of their games 6-0.

Jacie Taber connected with Kimi Presnell from 55 yards out on the opening possession of the Saucemores versus Pink Ladies game, but the conversion attempt fell incomplete.

The seniors were unable to convert a first down, and the sophomores nearly scored again after Taber and Presnell connected on yet another deep ball. The 52-yard pass parked them at the 10-yard line, but the Seniors held them to a pair of incompletions and a short run. They couldn't force a turnover, however, and time ran out.

In the Saucemore versus Junior game, the Juniors (0-2) got off to a great start as Jae Anthony-Wilson picked off a 15-yard interception return, then gave them a first-down with a 10-yard run. Jensen Arnold put a stop to the drive with a tackle for loss and stop on fourth down.

Both teams' next possessions also fell short and the game went into overtime. The Taber-Presnell combo hit pay dirt once again, but once again the conversion attempt fell incomplete.

Wilson appeared to tie things up on a carry, but the play was called back for holding. Two plays later, Daniela Solis picked off a pass to clench the game and send her team to the Championship game.

The Seniors came out hot in their game against the Juniors, scoring on the opening possession with an eight-play sixty-yard drive, capped by a 10-yard pass to Amari Grant. Anna Andrews caught the one-point conversion pass for the 7-0 advantage.

Kierra McGee picked off a pass on the Juniors' second play and the Seniors drained the clock and didn't give the ball back till there was only 15 seconds remaining. Hayley Taylor got off a short run for the juniors, but time expired and the Seniors punched their ticket to the finals.

In the Championship rematch between the Sophomores and Seniors, the Seniors scored on their first possession with a 21-yard pass from Pennington to McGee, but it was called back for holding.

The Sophomores got opening possession in the second half, but gave up an interception to Pennington. Pennington connected with Jessica Collins from four yards out for the go-ahead score, but the conversion attempt fell incomplete.

The Seniors played hard defense with a pass break up from Collins and a sack from Pennington to force a turnover, then assumed victory formation for the win.

Homecoming Queen Logan Bateman got a peck on the cheek from Kissing Captain Emily Spencer, but the real prize went to Kyler Copeland who surprised Spencer with balloons and a Promposal.

The Class of 2017 won the Powderpuff Championship the past two years, but the event was cancelled their sophomore year.

The Seniors were coached by Hunter Greathouse, Treyce Tolbert, Josh Taber, Danny Ropp, Cody Motes, Delvin Jordan, Caleb Wash, Kasey Bales, and Dalton Morgan.

The Juniors were coached by Payton Scott, Kobe Chen, and Kris Edwards.

The Sophomores were coached by Caden Pennington, Luke Bratcher, JT Bristow, Cooper Mock, and Jake Wright.

CPHS Baseball: Treyce Tolbert scores 2RBI home run to top Bixby 6-5

The Charles Page High School Varsity Baseball team (9-7 overall, 2-4 district) picked up their second district win of the season Tuesday night, 6-5 over the Bixby Spartans (6-10, 2-3). The teams split wins with Bixby beating Sand Springs 3-1 the night before.

The Spartans took a significant lead early in the game, but the Sandites battled right back before Treyce Tolbert switched the score with a 2RBI home run in the bottom of the fifth.

Josh Taber made the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first but was left stranded, then Bixby put the Sandites on their toes in the top of the second. Senior pitcher Hunter Greathouse (2-2) hit the first two batters with the pitch, then gave up a single to Matthew Henderson to load the bases with no outs. He made up for it right away, however, striking out Jake Bennett and Coby Tillman. Tre Waggnor grounded out on the next play and the Sandites saved the inning.

They wouldn't be as fortunate the next time around, however.

Bixby started the third inning with three-straight walks, then Cole Parker and Tucker Pawley scored on an error at shortstop. Nic Swanson scored on a sacrifice by Jeremy Goodwin, then Henderson hit a double.

Brock Youngblood (1-2) took over on the mound and gave up a single to Bennett to score Justin Smith, then struck out Tillman and caught a pop up from Waggnor to bring an end to the melee.

Next, it was the Sandites' turn to wreak havoc at the plate.

Ty Steelman walked, took second on a sacrifice from Kameron Adcock, then scored on a single from Taber. Mack Thompson brought in Taber with a double, then Tolbert scored Thompson with a double. Youngblood made his first plate appearance of the season and hit a single to score Tolbert to cut the deficit to 5-4.

It was a no-hitter for both teams in the fourth inning, but in the fifth Thompson drew a walk and scored on Tolbert's home run for the lead.

Youngblood got the win on the mound, giving up only two hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

The Sandites will return to action Friday with a Highway 97 Rivalry game against Sapulpa (9-5) at 4:30 p.m. Sapulpa previously defeated the Sandites 1-0 in their season-opener.

CPHS Soccer: Girls fall 3-0 to Booker T. Washington in district debut

The Charles Page High School Girls' Soccer team (1-6 overall, 0-1 district) traveled to Booker T. Washington High School (4-3, 1-0) for their first district game of the season and fell by 3-0 shutout.

The Lady Sandites were still recovering from an injury-laden tournament this past weekend and were missing their head coach due to a red card from the previous game.

Sand Springs was unable to muster enough offense to keep up with the Hornets, who out shot the Sandites nineteen to five. Junior goalkeeper Abigail Banks saved five of eight shots on goal.

The Ladies will return to action Friday at 6:00 p.m. in a non-district road game against Enid (1-6).

No. 10 CPHS Softball dominates previously undefeated 5A No. 3 Kellyville 9-1

By: Virgil Noah, Staff Writer

The No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School slow pitch softball team (4-0) ruined 5A No. 3 Kellyville High School's (9-1) perfect record with a 9-1 victory at home on Tuesday.

Kellyville got on the board first with a double off the wall in the third inning, scoring what would be the only run of the game against Lady Sandite pitcher Jensen Arnold (4-0).

The Lady Sandite offense made up the ground lost in their half of the third. Cameron Clemons walked followed by Felicity Horn reaching on an error. Kimi Presnell then hit a ground ball to third and Clemons beat the play to the plate to score the equalizing run. Horn scored the second run of the inning on a dropped popup to give Sand Springs a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Lady Sandite offense wasn't finished yet though. Madelyn Blair and Sabrina Usher both singled to start the fifth, and both came around to score on a throwing error. Mackenzie Bechtold singled and scored on an RBI single from Clemons, Horn singled home Rachel Jones, and Presnell doubled to score Clemons for a five run inning.

The sixth inning saw the last of the scoring. Makenna Skaggs doubled to lead off and scored on an RBI double by Jones. Jones scored the final run of the game after Clemons singled to left.

Clemons finished the game perfect from the plate going 2-2 with 2 singles, 2 RBI, a walk, and 2 runs scored.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Thursday afternoon at No. 3 Broken Arrow (8-0).

CPHS Boys' Soccer falls 2-1 to Booker T. Washington in PK shootout

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Charles Page High School Boys' Soccer Team (3-4 overall, 0-1 district) traveled to Booker T. Washington High School (4-1, 1-0) for their first district match of the season Tuesday night and played their longest game of the year thus far. The battle went into double-overtime with a lightning delay and eventually ended in a shootout.

The first half saw heavy defense with each team only getting off four shots apiece. All four of the Hornets' shots went wide or high, but Ignacio Garcia was just a tad off, connecting with the top post. Logan Jeffus scored the lone goal of the half with six minutes remaining.

The second half was an offensive melee by the home team, out-shooting the Sandites ten to one. Fortunately for Sand Springs, only four were on goal and only one went in. Grant King tied the game in the 59th minute of regulation.

The Sandites didn't get off a single shot in either overtime period, but they played outstanding defense, giving up only two shots to King that were well off goal. Following a thirty-minute lightning delay, the second overtime period went the way of the first. Damola Olaniran took the lone shot from forty yards deep, but goalie Edgar Soberano handily pulled in the save.

With the score still tied, the game went to penalty kicks. Dax Hayes, Max Pettit, King, and Alan Velasquez made their shots for the Hornets, but Jaden Weiser, Garcia, Logan Jeffus, and Gustavo Saldana made four for the Sandites to force a sudden-victory shootout.

Olaniran, Henry Allen, and Tim James made the first three goals for Washington, while Alex Hernandez and Kristian Fairchild sank the first two for Sand Springs. Gabe Jeffus's shot was saved, however, and the Hornets notched their first district win.

The Sandites will return to action Friday night in Enid (1-4) for a non-district match at 8:00 p.m.

CPHS Senior Daton Fix attains #1 ranking in USA pound-for-pound

Four-time undefeated State Champion Daton Fix hasn't lost a match in the U.S. since October of 2015.

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Daton Fix is a household name in Sand Springs by now. Every serious high school wrestling fan in the United States is at least somewhat aware of him, and every year his name-recognition increases worldwide as he racks up the hardware at junior and senior level freestyle events across the globe.

Fix has held the #1 ranking from FloWrestling in the 132-pound weight class since June, but after finishing his high school career undefeated as a four-time State Champion, he has now climbed to the top of the pound-for-pound rankings as well.

The previous #1 was Iowa University-signed senior Spencer Lee.

Fix and Lee have held very similar careers these past four years. The two first met in May of 2013 at the Cadet Freestyle Nationals in the 110-pound weight class. Lee rolled to a 13-2 technical fall for the National title.

Two years later it was Fix's turn, winning a 9-6 decision for the Championship. Since then, the Pennsylvania State Champion has won a pair of gold medals at the World Championships while the Oklahoman won bronze the past two years.

So what pushed Fix past Lee in the rankings? How he finished in high school. While Fix concluded his undefeated career with a 168-0 record and four State Championships, Lee lost his final match to end as a three-time State Champ and four-time finalist with a 144-1 record.

Lee could still easily make his case to remain number one, however. His loss was to a no-joke opponent in Drexel-signed senior Austin Desanto, who was then ranked fourth in the nation at their weight class. Furthermore, though he refuses to use it as an excuse, Lee was wrestling with a torn ACL in his right knee.

In the latest Flo rankings, Fix moved from third to first, while Lee dropped from first to third. Second-ranked Cornell-signed senior Yianni Diakomihalis held his spot. Diakomihalis and Fix have split decisions in the past. Diakomihalis defeated Fix 5-0 in the 2014 Super 32 finals, but Fix won a 3-1 overtime decision for the FloNationals Folkstyle Championship in 2015. Diakomihalis finished his career with a 243-3 record but didn't compete for the State Championship due to a broken elbow.

While the odds of meeting the 145-pound Diakomihalis is college is unlikely, it's very likely we could see Fix and Lee meet again, either at the collegiate level or in national/international freestyle competitions.

For now, the only four-time State Champion in Sandite history has certainly lived up to his Twitter handle of "Greatest Ever." At least, greatest ever in Sand Springs. But the State Championships were just small stepping stones in his ultimate quest for Olympic Gold. He'll get his first shot in Tokyo in 2020, but till then he'll have to be content with being the #1 wrestler in America, and maybe win a few NCAA Division One titles for Oklahoma State University along the way.
