No.14 Sandites looking to snap three-game losing streak before playoffs

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Friday night marks the last game of the season at Ed Dubie Field House. The Sandites (14-8) have the chance to get back on track with a payback win over No.18 Jenks (11-10) who upset them 53-48 a little over a month ago.

It won't be easy. While the Sandites have lost three-straight, the Trojans have won three-straight, including victories over Bartlesville and Broken Arrow who they lost to earlier in the season.

Sand Springs lost to No.5 Union (18-4) last Friday by a score of 70-59, which isn't that bad at all considering the Redskins beat their opponents by 17 points on average and have only dropped two conference battles this season. What was bad is what happened Tuesday evening.

Senior night in Sand Springs could not have gone any worse. The No. 7 Owasso Rams (17-5) handed the Sandites their worst defeat since the seniors were sophomores and Coach Savage was in his first year rebuilding a team that had gone 1-21 the year before he arrived.

The Rams got off to a 4-0 start and Sand Springs pulled the starting lineup that was all seniors and sent in the usual starters. It proved to be of little effect however as Tyler Smith and Brooks Haddock would combine for a meager 5 points and trailed 17-5 by the end of the quarter.

Owasso exploded in the second, outscoring Sand Springs 25-9 as Kinzer Lambert scored 14 of his 22 total points in that period alone. By the end of the third the damage was done and Savage benched his regulars for the duration as the team trailed 54-23.

For the first time this season it was Tyler Smith and Jacob Garby sharing the team-high with 6 points each and Owasso went home with a 70-38 victory.

The Rams have a history of dealing the Sandites massive losses, beating Sand Springs by 20 last year, and 66 three years ago.

Lady Rams fend off fourth quarter rally attempt by Lady Sandites, 53-48

The No.11 ranked Sand Springs Lady Sandites (14-7) just can't seem to catch a break. After winning eight straight earlier in the season, they've now dropped five of their last seven matchups and haven't defeated a ranked opponent in nearly a month.

It's not due to a lack of effort, however. All of their last  three losses were contested to the final moments and were to top-ten teams.

The girls defeated the Union Redskins (8-13) by double digits Friday night after eight Sandites got on the board and Gloria Mutiri and Sydney Pennington each doubled with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Tuesday night the girls battled valiantly against the No.9 Owasso Lady Rams (17-5) and returned from multiple double digit deficits to as close as 49-48 before the Rams finally got the edge and the 53-48 win in the final moments.

This time Pennington was the top scorer for the Sandites, followed by freshman Destiny Johnson, and each put up 8 points in the final stanza that saw the home team outscore their opponents 17-9.

The Sandites spent the entire night in the hole after giving up four straight turnovers to start with a 9-0 deficit. Johnson finally interrupted to onslaught with a layup, followed by Owasso's top-scorer, Rachel Skalnik, then the girls came alive.

Pennington missed her first shot of the game, but rebounded herself and sank the second attempt to cut it to 11-4. Sophomores Terryn Milton and Mya Bhinhar put up a basket each for the opposition, but Gloria Mutiri hit her lone basket of the night soon after. Mutiri's next attempt would fall short but Pennington fought for another rebound and hooked the ball out to senior Cierra Scott in the corner for a three.

Johnson snagged a steal off the Ram's subsequent possession and handed it off to Scott for yet another three to make the game 16-12.

Some sloppy Sandite work gave up the next five points to Owasso but Pennington responded with five of her own to cut the gap to 21-17 at the buzzer.

The next two periods were far closer but Owasso carried a 33-26 advantage into halftime and worked it up to 42-31 by the final quarter.

After a Loni Culley layup put the Sandites in the hole by 13 points it looked like the hotly contested game would begin to work itself further in favor of the visitors, but then our two heroes of the night went on a run.

Holly Kersgieter went 1-of-2 from the line, then Johnson hit a two before Pennington went on a 6-0 run and the girls were right back in it at 44-40. Milton hit a two pointer and added the extra penalty shot, but Pennington responded with a two followed by a pair of free throws by Johnson.

Milton added her 13th point of the night to make the advantage 49-44. Mutiri missed a two point attempt that Owasso rebounded but Scott snagged a steal and sent it to Johnson for two.

Both teams were in the bonus as Mutiri fouled Culley on the floor with 1:22 left, but the Ram missed her first shot and Pennington rebounded and passed it to Johnson who sent it to Kersgieter in the corner. The freshman had zero coverage and it looked like the Sandites were about to tie the game, but the shot hit rim and there were no Sandites there to rebound it.

Culley was bringing it up court when Johnson managed to slap the ball away and into the ready hands of Isabella Regalado who sent it back to Johnson on her way for the layup to close it down to 49-48 with 0:53 left.

Culley got payback with a layup of her own 21 seconds later and the return was in the hands of Cierra Scott, one of the best three-point shooters in the game. Owasso applied a full court press and Skalnik made off with the ball for a game-clinching two-pointer and despite being outscored 17-9 in the last period, the Rams held on to enough of their lead for a 53-48 final score.

Sand Springs has but one game left in the regular season and is currently fifth in Frontier Valley Conference standings with a 6-7 record in the talent-packed league. The girls will take on Jenks Friday night whom they already have a 64-43 road win over from a month ago. After that it's Regionals next Thursday as the Lady Sandites travel to Sapulpa to take on the Union Redskins who they have two double-digit wins over this season. If they add a third win they'll advance to the Area tournament regardless of the outcome of the Regional finals.

Sandite of the Week: Trace Fleischman

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

This week Sandite Pride would like to recognize CPHS Senior Trace Fleischman (6-2) as Sandite of the Week, with notable mention to Beau Bratcher, Daton Fix, and the entirety of the varsity wrestling team.

Friday saw the Sandites' first trip to Dual State since 2012, and they were headed there with the No.1 ranking in the state after going 11-0 in regular season duals and defeating 5A No.1 Collinsville and previous 6A No.1 Broken Arrow.

In the quarterfinals the Sandites narrowly fended off an upset by No.7 Westmoore 28-25, then dominated No.4 Union 48-6 to earn their first ever Dual State Championship finals appearance against No.3 Choctaw who had just upset No.2 Broken Arrow in their semifinals match. Unfortunately fate would give Choctaw the 41-18 upset and the previously undefeated Sandites would settle for State Runners-Up.

Trace Fleischman was a critical component in all three duals, and was one of only two Sandites who would wrestle all three duals undefeated.

Fleischman made his first appearance since January 9th when he was injured in the Geary Invitational and was pitted against Westmoore's #9 Deven Brewer whom he defeated 6-2 at 170 pounds. Next he majored Union's Elijah Tomlin 15-5 and finished out the finals with a 6-4 decision over Choctaw's #9 Kalob Blackwell.

Beau Bratcher also went undefeated in the tournament with three decisions, and Daton Fix was undefeated but received forfeits at the last two duals and only got to wrestle against Westmoore. Cody Mathis was undefeated but only wrestled against Union. Payton Scott won both of his matches but the team forfeited his weight against Choctaw as it was too late to make a comeback and they didn't want to risk injuring him.

Fleischman was also a crucial member of the State Runner-Up football team this fall. He was the starting wide receiver with 35 receptions for 754 yards and 8 touchdowns, averaging 22 yards per reception. He also carried 21 times for 111 yards on the ground and 1 touchdown. He led in kickoff returns with 18 for 447 yards, an average of 25 per. Very few players are allowed to play both sides of the ball under Coach Kinard, but Fleischman is one of the few exceptions and began playing defense in the 10th game of the season and delivered a total of 10 tackles over his four games in the secondary.

Fleischman is 16-4 over the last two season of wrestling and last year he was the 6A East Regional Champion and placed 3rd at the State Championship.

Sandites Cody Randall and Caleb Basma continue career at No.1 ranked NEO

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Two Sandites are now part of the No.1 ranked team in the National Junior College Athletics Association in their freshman year at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. Cody Randall (6-12) and Caleb Basma (6-10) graduated from Charles Page High School in 2015 with 38-7 and 10-8 records respectively. Both were 2015 State Qualifiers and Randall was named to the All-State team after placing third at the State Championship.

No.1 NEO (12-2) placed third at the NWCA NJCAA Dual Nationals in Fort Wayne, Indiana in January. Neither of the two freshmen got to participate in that event. Randall did get to wrestle two matches at the UNK Midwest Duals at the Buffalo County Expo Center in Kearney Nebraska where NEO went undefeated.

Both Randall and Basma won matches at the Maryville Kaufman Open and the Joe Parisi Open, though neither has managed to place in a collegiate tournament thus far.

Basma's younger brother, Zane, is currently 29-10 this season at CPHS and just helped his team to their first ever Dual State Championship finals appearance after going undefeated before falling 41-18 to Choctaw.

Sandites fall 41-18 to Choctaw in State Championship

#3 Zane Basma (29-10) kicked things off at 160 with a takedown of #4 Chase King but King escaped for a takedown of his own that added nearfall points before Basma managed to escape. King started the second period on bottom and escaped quickly for a 6-3 advantage. Basma did the same to start the third 6-4 and both battled back and forth before King got a takedown with near-fall points and pushed the match to 12-6 decision.

Choctaw rode a 3-0 lead into the 170 that saw #4 Trace Fleischman (6-2) against #9 Kalob Blackwell. The two were fairly evenly matched for most of the first, but Fleischman scored a takedown with 19 seconds left and maintained control into the second where he started on bottom and scored a quick escape. The Sandite added another takedown midway through the period and cut his opponent loose for a 5-1 advantage. Blackwell added another escape to start the third and nearly got a takedown but lost control on the way down and Fleischman rolled back to his feet. Blackwell did get his first takedown with 11 seconds left, but cut the Sandite loose and he fended off the rally to tie the match up with a 6-4 decision.

#4 Lane Lettich (12-8) represented the Sandites at 182 against Choctaw's #2 Easton Rendleman in the closest match thus far. Rendleman scored first with an escape to start the second, followed by Lettich to start the third and they were tied 1-1 till Rendleman got a takedown with 45 seconds left in the third. Lettich got the escape but was unable to chase down the Yellowjacket and went down 3-2.

195 #9 Zach Sims (22-20) walked all over Caulin Poole for the first two periods before running out of steam in the third. He took a 2-0 lead into the second, a 7-1 into the third, and finishing up 7-3 with three takedowns and an escape.

The back and forth affair continued at 220 as Choctaw's Tyrel Bell upset Delvin Jordan (14-5) by way of narrow 3-2 decision.

At Heavyweight it was Zach Austin with the 2:19 pin over Gage Fain (11-19) and Colt Newton with the 0:55 pin of Riley Weir (18-9) at 106 for a Yellowjacket lead of 21-6.

Choctaw won their fourth straight in Conner Holman over Michael Ritchey (19-17) by 6-4 decision.

At 120 Blake Sargent (32-11) found himself in an early hole to Garrett Rowe before managing an escape late in the second and trailed 8-1 as they started the final period. Rowe grabbed another takedown with 54 seconds left for a 10-1 major decision.

Sand Springs finally started to take some ground back at 126 as Jack Karstetter (33-7) scored an early takedown of Kaden Ogee for near-fall points and a 6-0 lead into the second period. Looking for a pin, Karstetter ran it up to 12-1 by the third and pinned the Yellowjacket in 4:12 to get the Sandites back in the game.

Choctaw had the edge at 132 however as Cole Shipman put work on Derek Davis (11-7) for a 6-1 lead going into the middle period and wrapped it up for a 13-1 major decision, effectively sealing Choctaw's State Championship at 32-16 with only two matches left.

Choctaw forfeited 138 to Daton Fix (38-0) and next up was Beau Bratcher (36-6) with a 4-3 decision over Jaryn Curry. The Sandites forfeited the final match at 152 so as to not risk injuring Payton Scott who was nursing  hurt arm from the semi-finals and settled for a 41-18 Runner-Up title.

It's been a good year for the Sandites, but also a disappointing one, as they've sent three teams to State Championships and lost all three: softball, football, and now wrestling. If there's a silver lining to this story it's that these teams have learned resilience, heartbreak, and how it feels to be on top of the world and have your goal slip away from you. This can only help them in the future, both athletically and in terms of life. Here's to next year and congratulations to our incredible field of talent on being a part of the greatest year of Sand Springs athletics in the history of our great town.
