CPHS Softball: Sandites top Broken Arrow 19-8 and Berryhill 9-0

The 2018 Slow Pitch Softball season has been a mess for the Sand Springs Sandites with more cancellations than gamedays.

After starting the season 2-3, the Charles Page High School Softball team had to cancel seven-straight games due to weather and field conditions before getting back into the swing of things at the Haskell Tournament.

The Ides of March saw a split double header as the Class 6A No. 14 ranked Lady Sandites (3-6) upset No. 5 Broken Arrow (7-4) in game one before getting hammered in the second installment.

Sand Springs easily handled the Tigers in game one, more than doubling the Tigers in both runs and hits.

Elizabeth Luttrell hit a two RBI home run in the third inning for a 6-0 lead, then Sabrina Usher, Luttrell, Kimi Presnell, and Madelyn Blair all hit home runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-4. Taber, Blair, and Presnell hit homers in the sixth and the Sandites prevailed 19-8.

Game two was a total reversal as the Tigers dominated Sand Springs 31-8. Broken Arrow piled on fifteen runs in the third inning for a 20-3 lead. Presnell hit a home run in the bottom of the third, the Tigers pushed it to 31-3 in the top of the fourth, then Presnell scored Cameron Clemons and Makenna Skaggs with a home run for the final runs of the game.

On Thursday the Sandites fell by a single run after leading No. 10 Jenks (11-4) for the entire game till the Trojans pulled away in the bottom of the fourth.

Sand Springs took a 5-0 first inning lead capped by a two-run homer by Blair, then Presnell did the same in the second inning to make it 7-0. Skaggs, Presnell, and Jensen Arnold hit home runs in the third, then Rachel Jones, Presnell, and Arnold homered in the fourth for a 19-9 advantage.

The Trojans picked up five walks and four home runs for a 20-19 lead in the bottom of the fourth before time expired. The Trojans swept the competition for first place in the tournament.

The Sandites went down 16-5 to 4A No. 12 Haskell (12-8), but easily handled 5A No. 11 Berryhill (13-8) in the third round of the tournament. Presnell was two-for-two at the plate with two homers and Clemons scored one of her own for the 9-0 shutout.

Oktaha was another close loss as the 4A No. 19 Tigers (11-4) prevailed 18-16 and fended off a sixth-inning rally. Arnold hit a home run and the Sandites led 5-2 in the top of the second, but Oktaha rallied in the bottom of the inning to make it 8-5.

Blair homered in the third, Presnell and Arnold in the fourth, and the Sandites jumped back out front at 11-8, but the Tigers took the lead once and for all in the bottom of the fourth. Blair hit another home run in the fifth.

Sand Springs Softball will return to action Monday at 5:00 p.m. when they host a double-header against 5A No. 8 Kellyville (12-6).

CPHS Softball: Sandites go 1-2 at Kellyville Festival, run-rule Okmulgee 13-0 in two innings

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School slow pitch softball team (1-2) made their season debut last week, placing third out of four teams at the Kellyville Festival.

The Lady Sandites fell 15-11 to 5A No. 7 Kellyville (8-2) and 12-8 to 5A No. 2 Heavener (7-0) before winning a 13-0 shutout against Okmulgee (0-5) on Tuesday.

Felicity Horn doubled to score Madelyn Blair, Rachel Jones scored Makenna Skaggs, and Kimi Presnell scored Horn in the second inning against Kellyville. Presnell hit a home run to score Jensen Arnold in the fourth, then Arnold hit a homer in the top of the fifth. Horn doubled again to score Skaggs in the fifth and the girls went runless in the sixth. Skaggs singled in Arnold and Elizabeth Luttrell in the seventh, but it wasn't enough and the Ponies prevailed 15-11.

Heavener worked up a 9-0 lead with three home runs by the time the Sandites got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Jacie Taber hit a solo home run to kick things off, then Sabrina Usher scored Kinsey Skaggs and Presnell in the fifth. Luttrell scored Usher and Madelyn Blair scored Drew Hawkins to cut the gap to 9-5. Heavener hit two more homers for a seven-run lead, and it came down to the bottom of the seventh. Arnold homered in Taber, then Luttrell hit a homer for the final run of the game before the comeback attempt fell short.

The final round of the festival was a slaughter as Okmulgee fell 14-0 in only two innings. Presnell and Usher hit back-to-back home runs on the first two pitches of the game to set the tone for the battle to come. Arnold doubled in Taber, Jones walked on loaded bases, Hawkins scored two on a single, then Mackenzie Bechtold scored a sacrifice for a 7-0 lead. In the second inning Arnold scored a 3RBI homer to put the game in double-digits, Bechtold and Taber batted in runs, and the Bulldogs went runless in the second inning to end the game by run-rule.

CPHS Softball: Sandites finish season 23-8, Kimi Presnell bats .522

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team saw their fall fast-pitch season come to a close this month with a 23-8 record and their third-straight Regional Championship, falling 4-1 to Choctaw in the State Semifinals.

After a game-two 4-3 loss to Claremore in a season-opening festival, the Lady Sandites rattled off six-straight wins before falling to the top-ranked team in Class 2A. They won another nine in a row, including a first place finish at the Bixby Tournament before hitting a rough patch at the University of Central Oklahoma Tournament where they went 2-3. They finished districts 8-2 for second place, then swept their Regional 3-0.

In the State Tournament they held Choctaw (32-9) scoreless for three innings before the Yellowjackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth. University of Northern Iowa-commit Jacie Taber gave up a walk and four hits before bringing the inning to a close with a strikeout.

Jensen Arnold singled in the bottom of the fourth and courtesy runner Kinsey Skaggs scored on a double from Felicity Horn, but that was the lone run of the game for the Lady Sandites.

The girls benefit from playing the only sport with two seasons in the same year. They will get one more tour together when Slow Pitch begins this spring. Last year they finished 11-13 in slow pitch, ranked No. 17 in Class 6A. They will graduate only two seniors this May in Lauryn Jewell and Destinee Garrett, returning a highly-talented and heavily-experienced unit in 2018.
