CPHS Basketball: Destiny Johnson signs with University of Tulsa

Charles Page High School senior Destiny Johnson signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to play basketball for the University of Tulsa.

Johnson is a fourth-year starter for the varsity squad and was the number-two scorer on the team last season. She averaged 16.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2 steals per game last season with a 48.1% field goal percentage and 65.7% free throw percentage. She recorded three double-doubles and led her team in scoring on ten occasions with a career-high of 31 points.

The University of Tulsa competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and the American Athletic Conference. They went 10-21 last season under eighth-year Head Coach Matilda Mossman.

The Lady Sandites went 18-8 last season and advanced to the State Tournament for the second-straight year. They won their third-straight Bishop Kelley Invitational Championship, second-straight Regional Championship, and second-straight Area Championship. The Sandites also won the Coffeyville Interstate Classic during Johnson’s freshman and sophomore years and the Frontier Valley Conference Championship her sophomore year.

Johnson was named FVC Newcomer of the Year as a freshman. She made the FVC All-Conference team as a sophomore and junior and the All-Bishop Kelley Tournament team as a junior.

Johnson’s senior season will kick off November 27th at Ponca City High School.

CPHS Basketball: Holly Kersgieter signs with University of Kansas

Charles Page High School senior Holly Kersgieter signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to play basketball for the University of Kansas.

Kersgieter is a fourth-year starter for the varsity squad and was the number-one scorer on the team last season. She averaged 18.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game with a 49.7% field goal percentage and 73.1% free throw percentage. She recorded four double-doubles and led her team in scoring on sixteen occasions with a career-high of 29 points.

The University of Kansas is located in Lawrence and competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I in the Big 12 Conference. They went 12-18 last season under fourth-year Head Coach Brandon Schneider.

The Lady Sandites went 18-8 last season and advanced to the State Tournament for the second-straight year. They won their third-straight Bishop Kelley Invitational Championship, second-straight Regional Championship, and second-straight Area Championship. The Sandites also won the Coffeyville Interstate Classic during Kersgieter’s freshman and sophomore years and the Frontier Valley Conference Championship her sophomore year.

Kersgieter was named FVC Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore and All-Bishop Kelley Tournament MVP as a junior. She made the FVC All-Conference team as a sophomore and junior, the All-Bishop Kelley Tournament team as a sophomore and junior, and the All-State team as a junior.

Kersgieter’s senior season will kick off November 27th at Ponca City High School.

CPHS Basketball: Isabella Regalado signs with Northeastern State University

Charles Page High School senior Isabella Regalado signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to play basketball for Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Regalado is a fourth-year varsity player and was the number-three scorer on the team last season. She averaged 9.3 points and 4.8 rebound per game last season with a 31.3% field goal percentage and 69.1% free throw percentage. She led her team in scoring on three occasions with a career-high of 23 points and was given a Frontier Valley Conference Honorable Mention in 2018.

NSU competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. They went 10-17 last season under first-year Head Coach Fala Bullock.

The Lady Sandites went 18-8 last season and advanced to the State Tournament for the second-straight year. Coaches Morrow and Green step down from Sandite Basketball and Volleyball

Charles Page High School has lost two successful head coaches this season. Head Volleyball Coach Janna Green resigned shortly after the fall season and Head Girls' Basketball Coach Dustin Morrow announced his resignation Monday. 

Green came to the Sand Springs School District in 2014 after a three-year stent at Owasso High School. She took over a program that went 14-26 the year before and finished with a winning record of 24-14 in 2016 for Frontier Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors. The girls went 15-18 in 2017. She holds an all-time high school coaching record of 117-110 and 65-72 at Sand Springs. Green is now the Director of Court Sports at Titan Sports and Performance Center in Tulsa. Assistant Coach Alyssa Bargas has also left the program after four years.

Morrow was also named FVC Coach of the year for the 2016-2017 season after winning the conference, going 24-2, and taking the girls to their first State Tournament appearance since 2011. Morrow took over the program in 2013 and took the team to a 10-14 record after going 3-42 over the two seasons prior. The Lady Sandites finished 18-8 with another State Tournament appearance this past season. Morrow holds a career record of 81-45. He will remain with the district as a science teacher.

"I want to thank the athletic department, my assistant coaches, the players and the entire community for supporting our basketball program during my 6 years as head coach," said Morrow in a public statement. "Having said that, I have decided to step down from my coaching duties. The future is bright for these young ladies and I'm excited to watch them compete for conference and state championships - as a fan! Thanks again and GO SANDITES!"

CPHS Basketball: Kersgieter and Johnson named All-Conference First Team

The Charles Page High School girls' basketball team recently wrapped up a successful 18-8 season with a 3-1 post-season record and State Tournament appearance. The team, which didn't include a single senior, had two players named to the All-Frontier Valley Conference First Team, and received two honorable mentions. 

University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter and Destiny Johnson, who also has Division One offers, were both First Team honorees. Isabella Regalado and Jacie Taber were given honorable mentions. All four are juniors. Taber is a University of Northern Iowa softball commit. 

The Sandites started the season with an eight game win streak and won the Bishop Kelley Invitational for the third-straight season. The girls hit a rough patch from there, going winless at the Tournament of Champions as part of a 5-7 run before getting back on track with a five-game win streak on their way to the OSSAA 6A State Tournament. 

2017-2018 Lady Sandite Season Statistics

The No. 13 ranked Lady Sandites won their Regional Tournament 60-51 over the host team, No. 10 Bixby, then upset previously undefeated FVC Champions No. 2 Bartlesville 53-42 at Area before falling 51-38 to the defending State Champions from No. 6 Choctaw in the State quarterfinals. They also finished third in conference action with an 11-3 record, and were 6-1 at home.

6A Conference Performances

The Frontier Valley Conference had the best post-season performance, amassing a 15-10 record. Bartlesville, Sand Springs, and Owasso won their Regional tournaments, while Bixby came in Runner-Up to advance four to Area. Sand Springs and Owasso won Area Championships while Bixby and Bartlesville won Area Consolation brackets to place four teams in the State Tournament. Owasso won their second State Title ever, and first since 1990.

The Big Ten went 11-9 in the post-season. Putnam City West and Choctaw won Regional Tournaments while Midwest City came in Runner-Up. Putnam City West won the Area Championship and Choctaw won the Area Consolation bracket. Both won their quarterfinal games at State, then Putnam West topped Choctaw to advance to the finals, falling 53-51 to Owasso. 

Shawnee, in their first year at 6A, was the only top-division team from the Suburban Conference. They represented their mostly-5A conference well, coming in Runner-Up in both Regionals and Area Consolation. 

Central Oklahoma went 15-19 in the post-season and had the most Area performances of any conference. Westmoore, Edmond Memorial, and Edmond Santa Fe won Regional Championships, while Deer Creek, Norman North, Norman, Mustang, and Edmond North came in Runner-Up for eight Area Qualifiers. Edmond Santa Fe won the Area Championship and Edmond Memorial won the Consolation bracket. Santa Fe advanced to the Semifinals and fell 48-43 to Owasso.

U.S. Grant and Capitol Hill went 0-2 as the only two 6A teams from the All-City Conference.
