CPHS Football Preview: Sandites host No. 5 Booker T. Washington in season finale

The Class 6A No. 14 ranked Sand Springs football team (2-7, 1-5) has nothing to gain and everything to prove when they host No. 5 Booker T. Washington (5-4, 4-2) Friday in the season finale. Sand Springs is already eliminated from the playoffs, while the Hornets have the No. 3 seed clinched.

The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at the 6700-seat Memorial Stadium on the campus of Charles Page High School at 600 North Adams Road. Parking is located on the south side of the stadium, with overflow on the practice field north of the stadium. Tickets are $7.00 for adults or $5.00 for students and senior citizens.

Prior to the game, the Church That Matters Tailgate Crew will be grilling hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, and hot dogs outside of the stadium. Meals are $6.00 and will benefit the Sandite Tennis program. Concessions inside the stadium include Chic Fil A sandwiches and benefit the Gold Pride Marching Band.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 3-7 season but prior to that was riding a program-best six straight years of playoff appearances. They are 65-74 (.468) under thirteenth-year head coach Dustin Kinard. The Sandites own one gold ball, from 1966, and made their last State Finals appearance in 2015.

Washington went 8-4 last season and has qualified for the playoffs for the eighth-straight year. They are 31-14 (.688) under fourth-year head coach Brad Calip. One of the most storied football programs in Oklahoma, the Hornets own nine State Titles (2017, 2010, 2008, 1984, 1973, 1971, 1969, 1968, 1967).

The Series

Washington leads the series 15-7 and has won the past three meetings. The teams have met annually since 2012 and Washington is 5-3 in that span. The Sandites last won in the 2015 Semifinals, avenging a regular-season loss. Sand Springs hasn’t beaten the Hornets in district play since 2013. If Washington wins on Friday it’ll mark the longest win streak for either team in the history of the series.

They gave a still-undefeated Bentonville a run for their money, losing by only 8 points, held undefeated Bixby to their lowest-scoring game of the season, and only lost by one point to Muskogee, who they also held to their lowest-scoring effort of the season.

The Hornets give up over 100 yards in penalties per game and have struggled with turnovers this season. They average 5 yards per carry and over 200 rushing yards per game, with 137 yards by air, 15.2 yards per completion, and 7.5 yards per pass attempt. CPHS Football: Sapulpa wins first Highway 97 Rivalry game since 2013, 31-19

Sapulpa Head Coach Robert Borgstadt picked up his first Highway 97 win since switching sidelines four years ago. He was previously the defensive coordinator at Charles Page.

For the first time since 2011 the Chieftains defended their home turf in a Highway 97 rivalry game, and it was the first rivalry win since Head Coach Robert Borgstadt switched sidelines in 2016. Class 6A-II No. 8 ranked Sapulpa (6-3, 3-3) knocked off No. 14 Sand Springs 31-19 on Senior Night thanks to a big second quarter.

A heavily depleted roster made things far closer than the Chieftains would have liked, but they made the most of Sandite errors to end a five-year losing streak in the 93rd installment of the historic series. Charles Page High School (2-7, 1-5) missed their shot to tie the series, and Sapulpa still leads the rivalry 45-43-5.

Sapulpa only led 7-6 late in the first half, and lost the second half 13-10, but they scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the second quarter and never trailed.

Kandon Williams recovered a fumble on the Sandites’ 31-yard line to set up a one-yard quarterback keeper from Zac Mason. Three punts later and Kaivon Mortazavi missed a 43-yard field goal attempt to end the first quarter.

Sand Springs got on the board with a methodical fourteen-play 76-yard march, scoring on a one-yard run from Trey Wilkerson. A bobbled snap resulted in a short kick that failed to even reach the endzone, and the visitors still trailed 7-6.

On the second play of the Chieftains’ corresponding possession, Mason threw a lateral to Marcus Esparza, who found Kenyon Kahmeyer for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Sand Springs got fancy in retaliation with Ty Pennington handing the ball off to backup QB Braden Foster, who hit Keaton Campbell for 40 yards on the first play of the drive. Kahmeyer came up big on defense with a red zone strip of Tyyee Atkison. Five plays later and Mason threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Williams.

Sapulpa took its biggest lead of the night after a nine-play 54-yard march and four-yard run from Esparza. Mortazavi’s kick made it 28-6, and it looked like the Chieftains could be on their way to a rout.

Jamon Sisco set the tone of the game to come with a 59-yard kick return, leading to a 16-yard touchdown pass from Pennington to Jacob Snodgrass. Zach Heinen connected on his PAT this time and made it 28-13.

The Chieftains marched as far as the Sand Springs 14-yard line before three consecutive penalties pushed them back to fourth-and-39. The teams traded punts and Sapulpa once again penetrated, but was held to a field goal after a fumbled hike slowed their progress. This time Mortazavi’s kick sailed true from 34 yards for the 31-13 advantage.

Sand Springs responded with an eight-play 80-yard scoring drive. Back-to-back incompletions nearly stalled it out, but Pennington picked up eleven yards on a fourth-down run-play option and eventually threw a 34-yard pass to Sisco. A two-point pass attempt fell short, leaving the final score at 31-19.

With 4:02 left to play, Caden Harris came up with a clutch fumble to keep the Sandites’ hopes alive. The boys made it as far as the Sapulpa 40 before Arthur Hudgens picked off a pass to seal the win.

Pennington led the passing game with an 18-33-219-1 performance, while Mason was 11-17-111-0. Campbell led the Sandite receiving corps 5-93, while Williams was the top Chieftain at 6-89. Esparza was the star of the show with 24 carries for 161 yards while the Sandites were held to double digits on the ground for the fifth-straight week.

The Sandites will host No. 5 Booker T. Washington (5-4, 4-2) for Senior Night as they try to match last year’s 3-7 record. Sapulpa will travel to No. 12 Ponca City (4-5, 2-4) with a playoff berth on the line.

Despite suffering significant losses on both sides of the ball, the home team was still heavily favored coming into the game, and is holding onto a 21-6 halftime lead.

Mistakes plagued the Sandites, whose frequent high snaps resulted in short awkward runs as well as a lost fumble, a short punt, and a missed PAT. Despite the two score deficit, Sand Springs outgained their foes in total first half yardage.

Sand Springs turned over its first possession on a fumbled hike, recovered by Kandon Williams at the Sandite 31-yard line. Sapulpa capitalized with a six-play drive and scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Zac Mason for the lead.

The two teams traded punts till the final minute of the first quarter, when Kaivon Mortazavi missed a 43-yard field goal attempt.

Two punts later and the Sandites finally got on the board with a methodical fourteen-play 76-yard march, scoring on a one-yard run from Trey Wilkerson. A bobbled hike resulted in a short kick that failed to even reach the endzone, and the visitors still trailed 7-6.

The Chieftains blew up the final minutes, scoring their second touchdown on a trick play, with Mason throwing a lateral to Marcus Esparza, who found Kenyon Kahmeyer for 49 yards and a touchdown.

The Sandites broke out their own playbook, with Ty Pennington handing the ball off to backup QB Braden Foster, who hit Keaton Campbell for 40 yards on the first play of the drive. The team’s third fumble of the night was fortunately recovered by Ryan Johnson, and they converted on their next play. They wouldn’t be so lucky on the following play, as Tyyee Atkison briefly broke into the Chieftain red zone before Kahmyer stripped the ball to set up another scoring drive.

This time the hungry Cheiftains carved out 75 yards in five plays, scoring on a 27 yard pass from Mason to Williams. Mortazavi was three-for-three on PATs, and the home team took a comfortable margin into the locker room.

Pennington was 8-15-97-0 passing in the first half, while Mason was 6-9-68-0.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 3-7 season but prior to that was riding a program-best six straight years of playoff appearances. They are 65-73 (.471) under thirteenth-year head coach Dustin Kinard. The Sandites own one gold ball, from 1966, and made their last State Finals appearance in 2015.

Sapulpa went 7-4 last year under Head Coach Robert Borgstadt, a former Sandite Defensive Coordinator. Now in his fourth year with the Chieftains, he has amassed a 14-25 (.359) record and only needs one more victory to give his team back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2013. The Chieftains have never won a State title.

The Series

The Highway 97 Rivalry dates back to 1922 and has been played annually since 1930. The Chieftains lead the all-time series 44-43-5 but haven’t won since 2013. They haven’t won on their home field since 2011, and have only won three of the the last thirteen meetings. Neither team has ever won more than five in a row. Sand Springs has won five-straight twice, 1995-1998 and 2014-2018. Sapulpa last accomplished the feat from 2001-2005. Sand Springs is poised to potentially tie the series for the first time since 1944.
