CPHS Football Preview: Sandites ride five-year win streak into Sapulpa rivalry game

The Class 6A-II No. 14 ranked Charles Page High School football team (2-6, 1-4) will travel to No. 8 Sapulpa (5-3, 2-3) Friday night for the 93rd installment of Highway 97 Rivalry. The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at George F. Collins Stadium.

The 4,300-seat stadium is located down a mere ten-mile stretch of highway from the Sandites’ home turf, at 3 South Mission Street on the campus of Sapulpa High School. Parking is located on the south and west sides of the stadium, with visitors’ side seating on the east. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 3-7 season but prior to that was riding a program-best six straight years of playoff appearances. They are 65-73 (.471) under thirteenth-year head coach Dustin Kinard. The Sandites own one gold ball, from 1966, and made their last State Finals appearance in 2015.

Sapulpa went 7-4 last year under Head Coach Robert Borgstadt, a former Sandite Defensive Coordinator. Now in his fourth year with the Chieftains, he has amassed a 14-25 (.359) record and only needs one more victory to give his team back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2013. The Chieftains have never won a State title.

The Series

The Highway 97 Rivalry dates back to 1922 and has been played annually since 1930. The Chieftains lead the all-time series 44-43-5 but haven’t won since 2013. They haven’t won on their home field since 2011, and have only won three of the the last thirteen meetings. Neither team has ever won more than five in a row. Sand Springs has won five-straight twice, 1995-1998 and 2014-2018. Sapulpa last accomplished the feat from 2001-2005. Sand Springs is poised to potentially tie the series for the first time since 1944.

Just like this year, Sand Springs rolled into their last meeting with the Chieftains sporting a 2-6, 1-4 record and were heavy underdogs. The Chieftains were 6-2, 2-1, and on their way to a post-season appearance, but Sand Springs stepped up to the challenge.

Senior quarterback Caden Pennington was 28-212 for six touchdowns on the ground, and was 8-9-123-0 for another touchdown by air. The Sandites took a 20-0 lead before letting their guests on the board.

The Sandites average 6.0 yards per pass attempt, 12.3 yards per completion, 2.7 yards per carry, and 4.3 yards per play. They convert on 33% of third down attempts and 50% of fourth downs. They score on 21% of possessions and 65% of red zone penetrations, and are 0-for-3 on two-point plays.

The Sandite Defense has held its foes to 8.4 yards per pass, 13.6 yards per completion, 4.9 yards per carry, and 6.2 yards per play. They have prevented scores on 51% of their opponents’ possessions and 21% of red zone penetrations. They stop 54% of third downs attempts and 52% of fourth downs. Their opponents are 2-of-4 on two-point conversions.

Sand Springs has struggled with penalties on all three sides of the ball. The offense is averaging 4 penalties for 34 yards, defense is 4-49, and special teams are 1-14 for 100 yards per game. The defense has given up 19 first-downs this season on penalties.

The Sandites have averaged a solid 19.1 yards per kick return and 12.5 per punt return. They have struggled in kick coverage, giving up 20.0 yards per kick return and 27.6 yards per punt return.

Sapulpa started the year 3-0, but has lost two of its last three games since losing star quarterback Eli Williams and star running back Te’Zohn Taft. Williams is definitely out for the season, and Taft hasn’t played since Week 5. The Chieftains own the No. 8 offense, No. 8 scoring defense, and No. 10 defense in points allowed. The are 9th in point differential.

Oklahoma High School Football Rankings: Class 6A-II Week Nine

1. Bixby (8-0, 5-0, Last week No. 1).

   • Bixby celebrated its 20th straight win with a 75-0 shutout of Sand Springs. It marked the most points scored in a district game in the history of Class 6A-II, and was the worst anybody has beaten the Sandites since 1924. The starters were benched after taking a 45-0 halftime lead, the second string was 16-0, and the third string was 14-0, showing off the depth of the division’s biggest powerhouse.

   • Mason Williams was 17-20-269-0 for four TDs and both of his backups scored as well. Oklahoma State University-commit Brennan Presley was 5-118 receiving for two TDs. Nine Spartans made catches and nine had carries in the offensive melee. Zach Blankenship led the ground game 11-74 and had TDs receiving and running. Reis Vernon extended his perfect PAT record to 61/61.

   • Bixby played a complete game with a punt return for touchdown and two safeties. They made five sacks and twelve tackles for loss.

   • The Spartans will travel to Shawnee Friday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Wolves 41-7 last year.

2. Stillwater (8-0, 5-0 Last week No. 2).

   • Stillwater rolled to its second shutout of the year, 61-0 against Putnam City West, despite losing star running back Qwontrel Walker in the first quarter. He was 7-126 for two TDs before leaving on crutches. The Pioneers came away with three interceptions and Carter Barnard had two of them. The defense also scored on a fumble recovery and two safeties. Gunnar Gundy was limited by rain but ended the night 4-6-81-0 with two TDs. The first string was benched by halftime.

   • The Pioneers will travel to Putnam City Friday, who they defeated 56-0 last year.

3. Del City (7-1, 5-0, Last week No. 3)

   • The Eagles continued their undefeated season in district play, handling Midwest City 26-7. Quinlan Ganther was 5-10-63-0 passing and 21-168 rushing for three TDs. Kyshon Murray Jr. had a 40-yard interception return and Ray Maytubby had a fumble recovery.

   • Del City will host Lawton Friday at 7:00 p.m. They rolled the Wolverines 55-28 last season.

4. Muskogee (7-1, 4-1, Last week No. 4).

   • The Roughers snapped back from their first loss with a close 7-6 game against Booker T. Washington. Ty Williams was 4-8-49-0 for one TD, and Jacob Scheihing’s kick was the difference maker.

   • Defensively they came up with a fourth-down stop to essentially clinch the game, but a bad snap in victory formation gave the Hornets a free field goal attempt with seven seconds left. Fortune was on Muskogee’s side and the kick went low and wide.

   • The Roughers will host Bartlesville Friday at 7:00 p.m. in their final home game of the season. They beat the Bruins 39-22 last year.

5. Booker T. Washington (4-4, 3-2, Last week No. 5).

   • Washington fell 7-6 to Muskogee thanks to a failed two-point conversion and a missed field goal. Gentry Williams was 5-16-59-1 passing and scored on a short run. Jaden Carroll was 21-102 on the ground.

   • The Hornets will host Ponca City Friday at 7:00 p.m. in their final home game of the year.

6. Midwest City (3-5, 3-2, Last week No. 6).

   • The Bombers fell 26-7 to Del City. Their only score came in the final minute on one-yard run by Kristawn Friday. Midwest City will play their last home game of the season Friday at 7:00 p.m. against Choctaw. They beat the Bombers 41-21 last year.

7. Choctaw (5-3, 3-2, Last week No. 7).

   • Choctaw edged out Lawton 41-35 behind a 22-35-356-1, five TD passing performance from Thad Williams, who was 10-126 for one TD on the ground. Gabe Johnson was 9-205 receiving with four TD catches. Deysean Moore scored two conversions, one on the ground, and one by catch.

   • Choctaw will travel to Midwest City Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 41-21 to the Bombers last year.

8. Sapulpa (5-3, 2-3, Last week No. 8).

   • The Chieftains snapped a two-game losing streak with a 30-20 win over Shawnee. Zac Mason and Marcus Esparza scored on runs and Jamario Jones had a 47-yard punt return for a TD. Kaivon Mortazavi executed a successful onside kick and connected on 23, 29, and 47 yard field goals.

   • Sapulpa will host arch-rival Sand Springs Friday at 7:00 p.m. They were upset 48-34 last year and haven’t won in six years.

9. Edmond Deer Creek (4-4, 2-3), Last week No. 9).

   • Deer Creek got back in the win column with a 47-3 trouncing of Putnam City. Gavin Houska was 1-3-7-0 passing for a TD, Lemorris Davis was 23-122 for a running score, and Tyler Travis stole the show with a 12-214, four TD ground game.

   • The Antler defense was solid with an interception, two sacks, and a blocked punt. Logan Ward was 6/6 on PATs, kicked a field goal, and had a TD reception.

   • Deer Creek will host Putnam West Friday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Patriots 38-14 last year.

10. Lawton (4-4, 1-4, Last week No. 10).

    • Lawton suffered its fourth loss in the past five games, 41-35 against Choctaw. Eric Wiley was 6-16-129-0 passing for one TD, and was 4-21 on the ground for two more. Christian Houston was the workhorse with a 32-214 rushing performance, but didn’t get to score. The Wolverines gave up two fumbles, but Demarcus Andrews made a pick and Jamal Hurd recovered a fumble.

    • Lawton will travel to Del City Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 55-28 last year against the Eagles.

11. Bartlesville (2-6, 2-3, Last week No. 12).

    • Bartlesville won its second-straight rivalry bout with Ponca City, 34-29. Ben Winters was 11-18-250-0 passing with two touchdowns, both thrown to Caden Davis. Davis was 5-140 receiving, and also had a 95-yard kick return for a TD, and blocked a Wildcat PAT. Laken Clowdus was 29-190 for two TDs on the ground.

    • The Bruins will travel to Muskogee Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 39-22 to the Roughers last year.

12. Ponca City (4-4, 2-3, Last week No. 11).

    • Ponca fell 34-29 to Bartlesville in a rivalry shootout. Justin Andrews was 6-9-76-0 passing and 23-100 on the ground with one touchdown. Kyter Welch scored three in a 23-198 performance. Spencer Ball was 2/3 on PATs and made a 41-yard field goal.

    • The Wildcats will travel to Booker T. Washington Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Hornets won last year’s meeting 27-7.

13. Shawnee (2-6, 1-4, Last week No. 13).

    • Shawnee fell 30-20 to Sapulpa. Joe Maytubby had an 11-yard TD run and an 88-yard scoop and score, and Dre’ Evans threw a 29-yard TD pass to Jaylon Orange.

    • The Wolves will host Bixby Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 41-7 to the Spartans last year.

14. Sand Springs (2-6, 1-4, Last week No. 14).

    • The Sandites suffered their worst loss in 95 years, falling 75-0 to Bixby. Ty Pennington was 3-10-46-0, and the team was held to a 35-11 rushing performance after twelve tackles for loss and five sacks. They had negative yardage in the first half.

    • Sand Springs will look for their sixth-straight win over Highway 97 rival Sapulpa Friday at 7:00 p.m. on the road. They won 48-34 last year.

15. Putnam City (1-7, 1-4, Last week No. 15).

    • The Pirates failed to score a touchdown for the sixth time this season, falling 47-3 to Deer Creek. They will host Stillwater Friday at 7:00 p.m. in their final home game of the season. Last year they were shut out 56-0 by the Pioneers.

16. Putnam City West (0-8, 0-5, Last week No. 16).

    • The Patriots were shut out 61-0 by Stillwater. They will travel to Deer Creek Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 38-14 to the Antlers last year.

CPHS Football: Bixby shuts out Sand Springs 75-0, worst loss in 95 years

Just four seasons ago, the Spartans and Sandites were playing for a State Title as the top two teams in Class 6A-II. Friday night’s blowout at Spartan Stadium was a stark departure from the three-straight years of postseason playoff meetings between Sand Springs and Bixby.

While No. 1 ranked Bixby has continued to improve year after year, and is currently 8-0 for the first time in decades, No. 14 Sand Springs is 2-6 for the second-straight year.

Last year’s 35-0 loss wasn’t that shocking. Bixby already had two bigger shutouts. But while this is also the Spartan’s third shutout of the season, this time around the Sandites got the worst of the three.  

75-0 isn’t only the most lopsided game in the history of the 30-game series. It’s the second-biggest loss in Sand Springs history. In 101 years of Sandite football, they have only allowed four 70-point games. The 75-0 loss was the worst outing for Sand Springs since 1924 when they fell 77-0 to Tulsa Central. It is also the most lopsided district meeting between any teams in the six-year history of Class 6A-II.

The Spartans

The Spartans took a 45-0 lead by half time. The second string won the third quarter 16-0, and the third string won the fourth quarter 14-0. Bixby only ran the ball six times in the first half, but only threw six passes in the second half.

Junior standout Mason Williams was 17-20-269-0 in the first half with four touchdown passes. Senior backup Corbin Steele was 5-6-83-0 for one score in the third period. Sophomore quarterback Christian Burke guided the Spartans through the fourth quarter and didn’t attempt any passes, but scored one touchdown on the ground.

Oklahoma State University-commit Brennan Presley was Williams’s star receiver with five catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Nine Spartans made catches and nine had carries in the offensive melee. Zach Blankenship led the ground game with 74 yards on 11 carries, entirely in the third quarter, closely followed by Dakota Davis, who was 4-71 in the fourth.

Reis Vernon was five-of-five kicking PATs to continue his perfect season. He is 61-of-61 this year. Connor Nolan took over in the second half and was four-for-four.

Sand Springs

Ty Pennington’s 3-10-46-0 passing performance was the least passing yards for the Sandites since his brother was 12-21-45-0 against Greenwood, Arkansas fifteen games ago. He was 0-for-4 in the first quarter before completing three-straight passes, including a 34-yarder. One of his passes was broken up and another was dropped after a perfect throw.

The Sandites were held to 11 yards on 35 carries thanks to twelve tackles for loss totaling 55 yards and five sacks. It was their fourth-straight game under 100 yards on the ground, and fifth of the season. It was their least rushing yards since at least 2014, which is as far back as Sandite Pride’s stats go.

The team was held to only four first-downs and punted eight times.

The Game

Braylin Presley scored a one-yard touchdown run on the first Spartan drive. The Sandites forced only one punt in the game, and were only down 7-0 after the first seven minutes. Not a bad start against the top-scoring offense in the division. Then things quickly began to unravel.

Owen DeWoody sacked Pennington for a safety and two plays later Williams found Brennan Presley on a slant. Presley shook off four would-be tacklers and cut back across the field for a 28-yard touchdown. Carson Chambers scored on a two-point run for the 17-0 advantage.

Another quick three and out for the Sandites led to a 42-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Brennan Presley. Vernon kicked the extra point to make it 24-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Brody Sartin made back-to-back tackles for loss on the Sandites’ next possession to force a punt, which Braylin Presley returned 37 yards for a score. Williams found the endzone twice more, both times on 18-yard passes to Chambers and Luke Creeker.

Blankenship did most of the work on the Spartans’ first drive of the second half, marching the ball 48 yards on seven carries to score on a fourth-and-goal run from the one. Bixby split duties on their second drive of the half, with Blankenship running it four times, and Steele hitting Alex Stadler for three-straight receptions. Blankenship added to his running score with a touchdown reception, taking a short screen 39 yards to the house.

On the Sandites’ final possession of the third quarter, Pennington fell on a fumble in the endzone for the Spartans’ second safety of the night. Connor Stacy was the workhorse on Bixby’s next drive, carrying the ball six times for 24 yards to set up Burke for the three-yard score.

Sand Springs almost put together a successful drive midway through the fourth quarter, picking up a first down behind a pair of runs from Tyyee Atkison. They were pushed back to fourth-and-eleven at the Spartan 29, and elected to go for it. Pennington hit Keaton Campbell perfectly in stride for first-down yardage and room to run, but at that point in the game it was raining fairly heavily and the ball squeaked through the sophomore’s hands.

Davis single-handedly carried the ball for an entire 71-yard drive, scoring on a 52-yarder for the final touchdown of the game.

Looking Forward

The Spartans will travel to No. 13 Shawnee (2-6, 1-4) Friday at 7:00 p.m. as they look to continue their undefeated season. Bixby will be a heavy favorite, but the Wolves already knocked off one undefeated team when they beat No. 4 Muskogee in Week 7.  

 Sand Springs will look to match last year’s 3-7 record when they take on their arch-rivals from No. 8 Sapulpa (5-3, 2-3). Like last year, the Sandites will be a significant underdog. But last year a No. 11 ranked 2-6 Sandite team upset No. 7 Sapulpa, who was 6-2 at the time. That game was a 48-34 redemption shootout, also following a shutout loss to Bixby. If the Chieftains aren’t careful, history could repeat itself.

CPHS Football: Sand Springs travels to No. 1 Bixby Friday

The Class 6A-II No. 14 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (2-5, 1-3) will have a David vs. Goliath battle on their hands when they travel to undefeated No. 1 Bixby (7-0, 4-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m. on Lee Snider Field.

The 5,500-seat Spartan Stadium was constructed in 1941 but has undergone expansions and remodels in the past few decades making it one of the finest facilities in the state. It is located at 601 South Riverview Drive, on the campus of Bixby High School. Parking is available on the north and east sides of the stadium. The west side is the home side of the stadium and visitors’ seating is on the east. Tickets are $7 for adults, and $5 for students and senior citizens.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 3-7 season but prior to that was riding a program-best six straight years of playoff appearances. They are 65-72 (.474) under thirteenth-year head coach Dustin Kinard. The Sandites own one gold ball, from 1966, and made their last State Finals appearance in 2015.

Bixby went 12-1 last season for their fourth State title in the past five years. Tenth-year head coach and Sand Springs-native Loren Montgomery is 77-37 (.675) with the Spartans and has guided them to five consecutive State Finals appearances. They haven’t posted a losing record or failed to make the playoffs since before the 6A split.

Bixby leads the all-time series 16-13 and has won ten of twelve in the past nine years. The series became a hot rivalry for a few years recently as both teams were in State Title contention. They met in the playoffs for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016, with Bixby winning twice in the semifinals and once in the 2015 championship.

Last year the Spartans won their first-ever shutout in the series, 35-0 at Memorial Stadium, and were up 28-0 by the half. Mason Williams won the quarterback dual 9-18-181-1 with two touchdowns, while Caden Pennington was 5-14-84-3. Bixby dominated the ground game with 218 yards and 6.8 per carry, while holding Sand Springs to 131 total and 3.0 per run. The brutal Spartan defense racked up twelve tackles for loss and four sacks, with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Oklahoma High School Football Rankings: Class 6A-II Week Eight

1. Bixby (7-0, 4-0, Last week No. 1).

   • The Spartans won their 19th-straight game 61-14 against Bartlesville with a 47-0 first half shutout.

   • Mason Williams was 13-18-259-0 for five touchdowns, with Luke Creeger and Brennan Presley both hauling in triple digit receiving yards. Braylin Presley was 10-98 rushing, Trevon Hold made a pick, and Reis Vernon continued his perfect season kicking PATs (46/46) and made a 35-yard field goal.

   • Bixby will host Sand Springs Friday at 7:00 p.m. They shut out the Sandites 35-0 last year and have won five straight in the series.

2. Stillwater (7-0, 4-0 Last week No. 2).

   • Stillwater took a 62-14 lead over Lawton by halftime, and neither team scored in the second half. Gunnar Gundy was 14-19-271-1 with three touchdowns, and Steven Brown had three catches for 126 yards and two scores. Qwontrel Walker was 15-215 for four scores on the ground. Tevin Williams and Cedrik Frazier made picks and Jake Diaz recovered a fumble. Williams scored on his interception

   • The Pioneers will travel to Putnam City West Friday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Patriots 48-0 last year for their second-straight win in the series.

3. Del City (6-1, 4-0, Last week No. 4).

   • The Eagles put together their first shut out of the season, 56-0 against Putnam City. Jahkobie Smith scored two running touchdowns and was 6/6 kicking PATs. Keshon Meadows threw a TD pass to Collin Siesinger and ran in a two-point conversion. Donovan Stephens recovered a fumble for a score.

   • Del City will look to continue their unbeaten district season Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Midwest City. They fell 42-6 to the Bombers last year and have dropped six-straight meetings.

4. Muskogee (6-1, 3-1, Last week No. 3).

   • Unbeaten no more, Muskogee hit its first hiccup 32-29 at Shawnee. A blocked punt for a touchdown set the tone of the upset to come. Ty Williams was 11-20-82-0 passing and Jimmie Coleman was 29-219 rushing. They had the lead going into the final 11 seconds, but gave up a fourth-down in the red zone to queue up the go-ahead run.

   • The Roughers will look to make up for the loss when they host Booker T. Washington Friday at 7:00 p.m. They lost 47-26 last year and haven’t won against the Hornets since 2016.

5. Booker T. Washington (4-3, 3-1, Last week No. 5).

   • The Hornets utterly shut down Sapulpa, holding them to 53 offensive yards in a 48-7 beat down. Both teams gave up three turnovers, and Washington gave up 165 yards in penalties, but it didn’t slow them down any. Sapulpa’s only score game on a 93-yard kick return in the third quarter.

   • Krishawn Brown scored on a fumble return and John Benson had a 90-yard interception return in the powerful defensive performance. Jaden Carroll paced the offense with 111 yards and four touchdowns.

   • Washington will travel to Muskogee Friday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Roughers 47-26 last year and have won their past two meetings.

6. Midwest City (3-4, 3-1, Last week No. 6).

   • The Bombers beat Deer Creek 27-14 on the road. Davione Tipton and Isaiah Hausam had interceptions and DeAngelo Irvin Jr. scored a trio of touchdown runs.

   • Midwest City will host Del City Friday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Eagles 42-6 last year and have won six-straight meetings.

7. Choctaw (4-3, 2-2), Last week No. 8).

   • Choctaw rebounded from a 74-14 loss at Stillwater with a 74-14 win over Putnam West. Thad Williams threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns in one half, and backup QB Steele Wasel threw one and ran for one. The defense only gave up 82 yards and scored one touchdown on two interceptions.

   • The Yellowjackets will travel to Lawton Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 54-44 last year to the Wolverines and 2016 was their only win against Lawton in the past seven meetings.

8. Sapulpa (4-3, 1-3, Last week No. 7).

   • The Chieftains are not the same team that they were two weeks ago, and a depleted roster led to a 48-7 loss at Booker T. Washington. Sapulpa’s only score came on a 93-yard kick return from JaMario Jones. The offense was shut out for the first time this season and held to only 53 yards. Sophomore Zac Mason was 6-19-25-1 passing.

   • Sapulpa will host Shawnee Friday at 7:00 p.m. They have won their past two meetings with the Wolves, including a 63-35 bout last year.

9. Edmond Deer Creek (3-4, 1-3), Last week No. 9).

   • Deer Creek fell 27-14 to Midwest City. Wil Hinton had a big red zone kick return to set up a score, Zane Shades had a fumble recovery, and Elijah Allen scored on an interception return.

   • The Antlers will travel to Putnam City Friday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Pirates 14-7 last year.

10. Lawton (4-3, 1-3, Last week No. 10).

    • The Wolverines suffered a 62-14 loss to Stillwater. Eric Wiley was 8-28-155-2 passing for one touchdown and Devin Simpson was 1-1-52-0 for another. Christian Houston was 16-74 to lead the ground game. Elijah Reyes had a 40-yard interception return.

    • Lawton will host Choctaw Friday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Yellowjackets 54-44 last season.

11. Ponca City (4-3, 2-2, Last week No. 11).

    • Ponca snapped a seven-year losing streak to Sand Springs to improve to their first four-win season since 2005. Justin Andrews was 8-16-92-0 passing for one touchdown, and was 16-60 rushing for another. Kyter Welch led the ground game 12-76 for a score. Spencer Ball was 3/3 kicking PATs and made a 34-yard field goal.

    • The Wildcats will aim to continue that success when they host Bartlesville Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 49-34 last year, but won the year before that to snap a nine-year losing streak.

12. Bartlesville (1-6, 1-3, Last week No. 12).

    • Bartlesville fell 61-14 to Bixby after trailing 47-0 at the half. Ben Winters racked up 292 passing yards and one rushing score in the loss.

    • The Bruins will travel to Ponca City Friday at 7:00 p.m. They won 49-34 last year.

13. Shawnee (2-5, 1-3, Last week No. 14).

    • The Wolves picked up their first district win with a major 32-29 upset of previously undefeated Muskogee.

    • Dre’ Evans was 18-27-192 passing and also led the Wolves in rushing yards with 65. Scout Cawvey was 9-119 receiving. Joe Maytubby blocked a bunt and Tanner Bare recovered it for a touchdown.

    • Shawnee will travel to Sapulpa Friday at 7:00 to try for back-to-back upsets.

14. Sand Springs (2-5, 1-3, Last week No. 13).

    • Sand Springs had two touchdowns called back for holding and missed a field goal in a 17-0 first half shut out against Ponca City, ultimately falling 24-14 for the first time in seven years.

    • Ty Pennington was 13-23-202-1 for one touchdown, with Keaton Campbell as his leading receiver at 6-134. They were held to only 55 rushing yards and lost the turnover margin 3-0.

    • The Sandites will travel to Bixby Friday at 7:00 p.m. They were shut out 35-0 last year and have dropped five-straight meetings with the Spartans.

15. Putnam City (1-6, 1-3, Last week No. 15).

    • The Pirates have given up 87 unanswered points following a 56-0 shutout at Del City. They will host Deer Creek Friday at 7:00 p.m. They fell 14-7 to the Antlers last year, but won the year before that.

    • The Patriots fell 74-14 to Choctaw and are still looking for their first win of the season. Darius Sharpe scored an 85-yard kick return in the loss.

CPHS Football: Comeback attempt falls short, Sandites fall 24-14 to Ponca City

The Class 6A-II No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (2-5, 1-3) was unable to overcome a rocky first half Thursday night against No. 11 Ponca City (4-3, 2-2), and fell 24-14. The win gave Ponca their best record since 2005, which was also the last time the Wildcats won at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The loss snapped a seven-year winning streak against Ponca.

Things could have gone very differently had the Sandites not gotten off to such a tough start. On their opening drive the home team marched 71 yards in only four plays to set up a first and goal at the 7-yard line. Trey Wilkerson had a touchdown run negated by holding, then Pennington threw a touchdown pass to Keaton Campbell that was also called back. Finally, a 32-yard field goal attempt by Zach Heinen missed, and the Sandites walked away scoreless.

The Sandite defense forced a quick three-and-out with tackles for loss from Alexa Favela and Lane Webster, but the Wildcat defense was equally potent. Nate Collins tackled Tyyee Atkison for a loss and Travaugh Tipton picked off Pennington’s pass, setting his team up for a seven-play 75-yard drive, capped by a two-yard scoring run from Kyter Welch. Spencer Ball kicked the PAT and the visitors never trailed.

Ponca got its third takeaway of the game midway through the second quarter and converted it into points only three plays later when Justin Andrews found Sam McKinney for a 48-yard touchdown pass and 14-0 lead.

The Sandites’ sixth possession of the night was a quick three-and-out, and Ponca spent the rest of the half draining the clock before kicking a 34-yard field goal and taking a 17-0 advantage into the locker room.

Sand Springs had a more productive second half, forcing a punt on Ponca’s opening drive and marching 80-yards in nine plays for a 14-yard touchdown pass from Pennington to Jamon Sisco. The Sandite defense held Ponca to negative yardage and a punt, and the offense put the game back in reach with a nine-play 48-yard drive and three-yard touchdown run from Wilkerson. Heinen kicked the PAT to make it 17-14 with 10:34 to play.

Ponca retaliated with a methodical eleven-play 52-yard march and two-yard touchdown run from Andrews to make it 24-14 with only 4:11 left.

Sand Springs converted one fourth down on their next drive, and went for a second from their own 36-yard line, but the pass was broken up, giving the Wildcats prime real estate. It was the home team’s turn to make a fourth-down stop, with Jerret Haley preventing a score from four yards out. By then only twelve seconds remained, and the Wildcats had secured the win.

Pennington broke 200 yards passing for the second-straight week, going 13-23-202-1, while Andrews was 8-16-92-0. Campbell was 6-134 receiving for his second-straight triple-digit performance, and accounted for 205 all-purpose yards. Sisco was 5-52 receiving for a career-high. Haley led the Sandite defense in total tackles. Lennox Sunneagle came up big for the Wildcats with two sacks, and Camdon Fleming had a fumble recovery.

The Wildcats will look to continue their historic turnaround season when they host No. 12 Bartlesville (1-6, 1-3) Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Sandites will take to the road Friday when they battle the defending State Champions in Bixby (7-0, 4-0).
