CPHS Basketball: Sandites 2-3 in new year, will compete at Port City Classic Thursday

The Class 6A No. 18 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (4-4) is 2-3 in the new year with three tough conference losses, one non-conference blowout, and one big rivalry win. The boys lost a 76-75 heartbreaker to No. 9 Bixby (10-1), won 87-34 against Okmulgee (0-5), won 85-65 against 5A No. 5 Sapulpa (8-6), then lost 68-54 to No. 12 Union (8-4) and 72-60 to No. 7 Owasso (6-1).

The January 5th game at Bixby was a roller coaster from the very beginning. Jason Clark hit a layup on the opening possession and Marlo Fox drained a three for the 5-0 lead and took a 16-12 advantage into the second quarter. Bixby opened the second stanza on a 7-2 run for their first lead and scored nine in a row for their biggest advantage at 36-26.

The Sandites had a nine-point streak of their own in the third quarter and reclaimed the lead at 46-45 with a layup from Clark, but Bixby closed on a four-point run to take a 56-52 lead into the final stretch. Ethan Oakley scored eight points in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead bucket at 76-75 with 13 seconds remaining. Connor Loney had the final say, however, putting back a missed three from Parker Friedrickson, then picked off a Sandite pass attempt with seconds left to clinch the win.

Xavier Glenn led all scorers with 23 points. Oakley led the Sandites for the first time ever with a career-best 22 points. Fox put up 18, and Clark and Fisher had 12 apiece. Fisher also snagged 10 boards for his first double-double.

On January 8th the Sandites rolled to their biggest win since 2016 against Okmulgee in a late addition to the schedule. 12 out of 14 Sandites put up points against the 3A Bulldogs in their visitors’ season-opener. Fisher set a new career-best for the second game in a row, leading the team with 17 points, and had 11 rebounds for a double-double. Fox added 16 points and two other Sandites also reached double digits.

Eric Savage evened the score against Sapulpa, improving his record to 7-7 against the Sandites’ chief rival. The Sandites scored 12 in a row to open the game and took a commanding 24-8 lead into the second quarter, and the Chieftains never recovered. They tried, however. Sapulpa opened the second stanza on a 9-2 run and cut it to 31-22, but the home team buckled down and John Keim hit a pair of free throws to kick off yet another 12-0 run and the Sandites entered the half 46-23.

Sapulpa won the third quarter and opened the fourth on an eight-point streak to get back to a ten-point deficit but the momentum ran out and the Sandites held strong for the win. Fox went off for a career-best 34 points, including six threes, to lead all scorers, followed by Clark and Fisher with double-digits as well. Jackson Skipper led the Chieftains with 18 and Te’Zohn Taft had 16.

The Sandites tried their best to keep up with Union last Friday but the Redskins finished strong, winning the fourth quarter 17-11 to ward off any potential comeback. The teams were knotted up at 15-15 after one quarter but the Redskins pulled ahead to 32-23 halftime lead and never trailed after the first quarter.

Fisher scored 19 to lead all scorers, but Cason Savage was the only other Sandite in double digits with 10 points. Dalen Fuller had 14 and Dayon Aromaye scored 13 for Union.

Owasso was a tougher pill to swallow as it looked like the Sandites might just pull off a miracle comeback. The Rams took a 9-0 lead out of the gate, led by 12 at the half, and entered the fourth quarter 52-36. Sand Springs went on a 9-0 run of their own to make it a single-digit game, but the Rams tightened up down the stretch and ultimately won by 12.

Fox led all scorers with 28 points, but Savage was the only other Sandite in doubles with 13. Caden Fry had 20 for the Rams, followed by Kyler Mann with 19 and Trenton Ellison with 15.

Sandite Basketball will return to action Thursday at 8:30 p.m. against 5A No. 16 Collinsville (5-3) in the first round of the Port City Classic. The Catoosa tournament has been relocated to Victory Christian High School in Tulsa after the hosting Indians shut down all athletic operations due to COVID-19.
