CPHS Basketball: Girls look to snap three-game losing streak at Owasso

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (4-5) is riding a three-game losing streak in the new year thanks to a tough schedule that included three top-six teams. They fell 53-44 to No. 6 Bixby (10-4) , 74-42 to 5A No. 1 Sapulpa (9-2), and 60-47 to No. 2 Union (11-0), all in Frontier Valley Conference action. The girls also had a 83-14 rout of Okmulgee, but that was officially recorded as a junior varsity game against the Okmulgee varsity (0-4).

The Lady Sandite schedule will ease up on Tuesday as they travel to unranked Owasso (1-10) for a conference game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.. The Rams are in their first season under Head Coach Tobey Nightingale, who led the Sandites to a 21-5 mark and Conference Championship in 2018-2019 before moving out of state for a year. Josh Berry’s Sandites went 2-0 against Owasso last year.

The girls were initially scheduled to play Coweta and Holland Hall at the Holland Hall Festival Thursday and Friday, but will instead compete at the Catoosa Tournament, with a Thursday game against former Frontier Valley foe Bishop Kelley (3-7) at 1:00 p.m.

In the January 5th game against Bixby the girls played close and physical, never trailing by more than 10, and hanging as close as 32-32 with minutes to play in the third quarter. The visiting Sandites led 11-10 after one quarter at Whitey Ford Field House, but Kate Bradley got hot with 11 points in the second quarter to take a 26-20 lead into the half.

The salty Sandite defense came up with three takeaways in the third quarter, scored on each, and Darrian Jordan tied it for the last time at 32-32, but Bradley hit her fourth of five threes to kick off a seven-point run at the end of the stanza. Bradley led all scorers with 23 points, and Journey Armstead lead the Sandites with 16.

The top-ranked Chieftains came into the Ed Dubie Field House a week later and dealt the home team their worst loss since a 72-38 Regional rout in 2016, which also came at the Chieftains’ hands. Stailee Heard scored a game-high 24 points and Temira Poindexter added 18 as the two combined for nearly as many as the entire Sand Springs team. Armstead led the home team with 17.

On Friday the girls had to host the still undefeated Union Redskins. and though they lost by double digits, they avoided repeating the prior blowout and pulled as close as 56-46 in the fourth quarter. Jordan led her team for the first time in her career with a season-high 14 points, followed by Hailey Jackson with 13 and Armstead with 11. T.K. Pitts led all scorers with 17 for Union.

In the January 8th game against Okmulgee, the Sandites rested their usual starters and gave the backups valuable reps. Layne Kirkendoll was the only usual starter who saw action, and that was due to missing four of the previous five games with an injury. All twelve Sandites who saw action made their way into the scorebook. Kirkendoll and Kiaryn Taylor scored a team-high ten points apiece
