The Class 6A No. 18 ranked Charles Page High School volleyball team (8-8, 1-2) took a trip down Highway 97 to 5A No. 9 Sapulpa (7-10, 0-3) Tuesday evening and rolled to a 3-0 sweep against their biggest rivals. They previously beat the Chieftains 2-1 at the Sandite Invitational, but Tuesday’s win was the team’s first in Frontier Valley Conference play.

Teyha Johnson returned to action for the Sandites after missing the last ten matches due to an ankle injury. The injury bug passed to Sapulpa, who lost Saniya Howard on the second rally of the match. Howard scored a kill to tie it at 1-1 but came down hard on her knee and spent the rest of the evening on ice.

Game one tied eight times before the Sandites pulled ahead with a four-point run at 14-10. Sapulpa committed ten errors in the game while Sand Springs only had five, and the Sandites won the battle at the net with four blocks. Kasidy Holland and Layla Lenex scored three kills apiece and Jacelyn Smith and Sophie Singleton combined on three blocks in the 25-17 win.

The second set was far closer with twelve tie scores, and neither team ever led by more than three points. Sapulpa had the longest streak, scoring five in a row to turn a 15-12 deficit into a 17-15 lead, thanks to a trio of aces from Kyleigh Sizemore. Payton Robbins scored back to back kills and Smith added a third to make it 23-21 but the Chieftains battled back to tie it at 24-24 before an error and a kill from Holland secured the win. Holland and Robbins scored four kills apiece.

On more than one occasion it looked like Sapulpa might run away with the third set, but each time the Sandites battled back. Ryann Hoey scored three kills in a four-point run for the 17-12 Chieftain advantage, but Holland scored a pair of kills in a four-point Sandite run. Robbins notched two more as the Sandites took the lead at 21-19 and they pushed their lead to 24-20 with a kill from Smith. An ace from Kylie Hammond and a pair of Sandite errors allowed the Chieftains to get their foot in the door, but Singleton smacked down the game-winning kill before they could tie it.

Sand Springs committed only 20 errors, their second-best performance of the season in a three-set match. They struggled in serving, however, with only three aces against seven service errors. Olivia Dewitt accounted for two of those aces and Madison Blaylock had the other. Blaylock led the team in digs with 26, Johnson had 25 assists, Smith had five blocks, and Holland had a career-high 11 kills.

Hoey led Sapulpa with 14 kills and their only block, followed by Lilly Horath with nine kills and Sizemore with seven kills and five aces.

Sandite Volleyball will return to action Thursday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference road match against No. 9 Owasso (6-2, 2-1). Sapulpa will host a non-conference match against 4A No. 17 Berryhill (2-2) Friday at 6:00 p.m.
