CPHS Basketball: Boys hold off Enid 48-44 at Regionals, Savage scores 18
/The Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (16-7) won its first round Regional playoff game Friday night against Enid (6-16), punching their ticket to the Area playoffs for the third straight year.
They will play No. 11 Southmoore (17-7) Saturday at 7:00 p.m. as they look for their first Regional title in the Eric Savage era.
The Plainsmen were a far tougher opponent than the Sandites expected, and the home team was shorthanded without leading-scorer Davon Richardson. Enid led eight times in the game and never trailed by more than seven, but couldn’t get out front in the final period.
The first period saw seven lead changes with Abraham Rodriguez leading all scorers in a ten-point performance for the Plainsmen. The Sandites scored seven straight for at 15-12 advantage but Enid closed on a four point run.
Cale Savage was the driving force for the home team, scoring eleven in the first half. Sand Springs held the visitors to six points in the second period for a 26-22 halftime lead. Josh Minney scored six in the second period.
Enid stayed competitive through the third, leading twice and trailing only 36-35 to start the final stanza.
Marlo Fox scored three to start the period. Savage, Cyson Mathis, Fox, and Rodriguez took turns making layups. Will Phillips scored a pair of free throws for the Plainsmen, but Minney made one and Cason Savage hit two more for a seven-point lead in the final minute. Rodriguez sank a three with eleven seconds remaining, but that would be the final goal of the game.
Rodriguez led all scorers with 21 points and was the only Plainsman in double digits. Cale Savage led the Sandites with eighteen points, followed by Fox with ten.
Both Sand Springs and Southmoore will advance to the Area playoffs. The Regional Champion will only need to win one game in Area to advance to State, and can afford to lose once, while the Runner-Up will need to win twice and will be eliminated with a loss.
