CPHS Wrestling: Sandites roll over Kansas 6A State Champions 39-20

Owasso, OK - Bigger isn’t always better. After falling 38-30 to the Kansas 5A State Champions, the Sandites rebounded with a victory over the Kansas 6A State Champions in the consolation semifinals at the Third Annual Ram Duals. Charles Page High School (11-3) defeated Mannhattan High School 39-20. 

Chris Kirby (15-5) kicked things off in style by pinning Daron Island-Jones in 2:42. The Indians got on the board with a 14-6 major decision from State Runner-Up Bubba Wilson over Kaleb Tabor (18-9) and took the lead as State Champion Jalin Harper pinned Braydon Dahl (0-3) in 0:55. Quincy Saddler won an 8-8 ultimate tie breaker against Dayvon Taylor (16-16) before the Sandites got back in the win column with a 6-4 decision from Noah Almy (4-5, 28-25) over Mikey Soberano. Both teams gave up unsportsmanlike penalties in that match and the Indians held the lead at 12-8.

Josh Fincannon (8-13) gave up a 9-1 major decision to Robert Houston, Gage Fain (15-6, 54-44) got a forfeit at 220, and Hunter Christensen won an 8-0 major decision against Robbie Parrish (1-10) to make it 20-14.

Carter Young (30-1) won an 18-3 technical fall against State Qualifier Tate Saunders and Brendon Wiseley (11-7, 12-7) teched Adrian Kaus 16-0 for the team lead.

State Champion Riley Weir (20-6, 82-24) won a 5-0 decision against Joshua Pence, and Seth Jones (20-12, 22-15) pinned Marccus Wallace in 1:36 to clinch the dual at 33-20. Irwin Portillo (22-16, 28-21) won a 3-1 decision over Darius Island-Jones and Scott Patton (21-16, 28-18) won a 7-0 decision against Jacob Mitchell to wrap things up.

The Sandites will wrestle for fifth place against 3A No. 2 Comanche (12-3) at 1:45 p.m. at Owasso High School.
