CPHS Basketball: Sandites split at Broken Arrow, Darrian Jordan leads girls to win

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (9-7) is now 3-1 against Broken Arrow (6-8) in their two seasons under Head Coach Josh Berry, picking up a 40-38 Frontier Valley Conference win Tuesday night at Tiger Field House. But just like all three games last year, it was close from start to finish. All four meetings have been decided by five points or less.

The Lady Sandites trailed only once in the game, after Taleyah Jones put up the opening bucket. Freshman star Sakauri Wilson scored on a steal to tie it, then Darrian Jordan sank a three for the lead and they never gave it up. Jordan scored through contact to add a conventional three, then Layne Kirkendoll made it 10-3 before the Tigers came roaring back.

Broken Arrow made it a one-point game twice in the first quarter and they were only down 12-11 when Leyshia Morris drilled a three to end the quarter. Mikah Hampton scored a putback and Hailey Jackson made buckets on back-to-back possessions to win the second quarter 6-0 and took a ten point lead into the locker room.

The home team won the second half 27-19 but couldn’t quite erase their scoreless second stanza. The Sandites were short one starter for almost the entire half after Kirkendoll fouled out on a technical early in the third, and without her height the Sandites lost the rebound battle significantly. The Tigers made it a one-score game five times in the fourth quarter but the Sandites made just enough plays to stay alive.

Jones led all scorers with 19 points and was the only Tiger in double digits. Jordan scored 11 to lead the Sandites for the second time this season, followed by Jackson with nine. Journey Armstead, playing through a recovering injury, was held to a career-low four points - but her fellow Sandites stepped up to the occasion with one of their most balanced team efforts of the season.

Sand Springs Boys Basketball

The Sandite boys are in a bit of a tough spot, unranked and coming off their worst loss since 2016. No. 10 Broken Arrow (11-5) rolled to an 82-50 conference win Tuesday night on the home court for their fifth-straight in league play. The Tigers improved to 5-2 in the Frontier Valley while Sand Springs dropped to 1-6 and 5-8 overall.

6’5” junior forward Anthony Allen singlehandedly gave his team a 6-0 lead en route to a team-high 21 points for the Tigers, who never trailed and led 23-8 by the end of the first period and 42-24 at the half. Senior first-year starter Corbin Fisher put up a career-high 22 points to lead all scorers, but was the only Sandite in double digits. The Tigers had four double-digit scorers, including Simon Blair who had 18 off the bench.

Broken Arrow was the most accurate team the Sandites have played all season, shooting 62% in the field and 10-of-17 on three-pointers.

Sand Springs basketball is scheduled to host the Northeast Oklahoma Association of Home Schools (NOAH) Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in non-conference play, followed by Bartlesville Friday.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites miss out on Dual State but roll Union 50-22 in season finale

The Charles Page High School wrestling team wrapped up a disappointing dual season with a 4-6 record last week, but finished on a high note with a 50-22 drubbing of Class 6A No. 7 ranked Union (5-3).

The Sandites are unranked and will be missing from the Dual State tournament for the first time since 2015 after failing to win their district. They rolled to a 63-15 win against Muskogee (2-4) but split the matches 7-7 against Ponca City (3-0), who won 37-33 on bonus points.

The Sandites struggled with an unusually tough schedule this season in which they took on almost exclusively top-tier opponents. Their losses came to now-No. 5 Stillwater, No. 4 Bixby, No. 3 Edmond North, No. 2 Mustang, and 5A No. 1 Collinsville. Although Ponca City is unranked, that can primarily be attributed to a late start on the season, with only one dual prior to districts. The teams Sand Springs lost to have a combined record of 51-4.

Sapulpa (3-3), who hasn’t beaten the Sandites since 2013, canceled their district appearances due to COVID-19, and the Sandites also missed out on the Owasso Ram Duals where they usually pick up a handful of wins.

On the 19th the Sandites traveled to Mustang for a three-way meet against Mustang (18-2) and Edmond North (13-0). They were severely shorthanded and had to forfeit three weight classes in each dual.

Mitchell Smith, Blake Jones, and Sango Whitehorn all recorded pins in a 51-22 loss to Edmond North, and Brooks Dudley got a 14-0 major decision. Jones and Whitehorn also got pins against Mustang, while Shane Wolf and Smith earned decisions in the 54-24 loss.

In Tuesday’s dual against Muskogee they received five forfeits and went 6-3 in the remaining matches with pins from Harley Newberry, Ethan Norton, Chase White, Mason Harris, and Zander Grigsby.

The dual against Ponca was an even 7-7 split but the Wildcats earned five pins to the Sandites’ four. Four of Ponca’s falls came in the first six matches as the home team stormed out to a 24-6 lead. Blake Jones evened it up a bit with a pin at 160, but returning State Qualifiers Gabe Roland and Landon Newlin made it 34-12.

Whitehorn, Dudley, and Harris kept the team alive with three straight falls, but Chris Kiser clinched the Wildcat win with a 7-3 decision at 106 pounds. Wolf, Jesse Moore, and Ethan Norton all won decisions for the Sandites.

Sand Springs was firing on all cylinders in their Homecoming dual against Union, earning six pins and a technical fall. Union won only four matches, all of which came at the hands of returning State Qualifiers, and they never led.

Wolf earned a 17-2 third-period technical fall at 113 but a pin from Riley Trickett at 132 pulled the Redskins as close as 11-10. Ethan Norton won a 6-3 decision, and the next eight matches were all decided by pin. Noah Smith and Gavin Koehler got the bonus points for Union, while Smith, Jones, White, Whitehorn, Dudley, and Harris powered to the win.

The last time the Sandites finished the year without a winning record was a 6-6 performance in the 2005-2006 season. They haven’t had a losing record since at least 1986, which is as far back as Sandite Pride’s records go. Sandite fans can rest assured things will likely get back to normal next year when quarantines and COVID-19 are (hopefully) no longer a factor.

CPHS Basketball: Girls drop tough loss to No. 10 Booker T. Washington

The Class 6A No. 14 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (8-7 overall, 4-4 conference) suffered a tough Frontier Valley Conference loss Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, falling 52-40 to No. 10 Booker T. Washington (8-5, 5-2).

The Hornets won their third straight game and led for most of the bout after Natalya Jones kicked off a seven-point run for an 11-4 lead in the first quarter. Layne Kirkendoll scored the last bucket of the quarter to start an eight-point streak for the Sandites, who took their only lead of the game at 16-14 on a three-pointer from Sakauri Wilson early in the second.

The game of streaks continued and the Hornets scored seven in a row and never against gave up their advantage. The Sandites only trailed 23-20 at the half, but an 11-point Hornet run in the third quarter put them down 36-22 and they never recovered despite narrowly winning the fourth quarter.

Journey Armstead, returning from injury, scored 14 points to lead the Sandites, and put up two three-pointers in the fourth quarter as her team tried to rally. Hailey Jackson added ten as the only other Sandite in double digits. Carrigan Hill led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Sai Johnson with 13 and Haylee Mitchell with 11.

Lady Sandite Basketball will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference road game at Broken Arrow (6-7, 3-4). The Sandites went 2-1 against the Tigers last season, winning both league games but falling in a high-scoring Regional playoff shootout.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites drop overtime heartbreaker to Jenks

Down 8-0 to start the game, the Class 6A No. 20 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team rallied to a 26-24 halftime lead and were up 43-35 early in the fourth. Then it was the visitors’ turn to rally.

No. 10 Jenks (8-3 overall, 3-2 conference) forced the Sandites into overtime before dropping them to 5-7 overall and 1-5 in Frontier Valley Conference action Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House.

Dylan Golightly scored two threes and Benjamin Averitt added a pair of free throws in the Trojans’ opening volley before Daren Hawkins found an answer. Marlo Fox hit his first of three threes late in the quarter and Hawkins added a conventional three to make it a one-score game to end the stanza.

Fox added two more threes in the second quarter to tie it at 22-22, then hit a jump shot for the first Sandite lead of the game. Seth Wilkins and Corbin Fisher exchanged twos and the Sandites entered the locker room on top.

The teams took turns trading the lead in the third quarter before Cason Savage tied it at 34-34 with a pair of free throws to kick off a seven-point run that included a three from Fisher. They remained out front till Gron Tata hit a three at 45-45 late in the fourth.

Hawkins retaliated with a pair of free throws, but Averitt tied it up with 1:45 to play. Fox had a three shot rim out and Jenks rebounded, but Averitt missed a layup and the Sandites worked to drain the clock before their last attempt. Fox missed a two-point jumper and Chase Martin grabbed the board, but with only two seconds to play, and Tata failed to get the three up before the buzzer.

Fox scored two early into the four-minute overtime period, but Tata hit a three for the lead and the Trojans added a trio of free throws to end the game on a six-point run.

Fox led all scorers with 21 points, and Fisher added 13 points and seven rebounds as the only other Sandite in double-digits. Averitt had 18 points to pace the Trojans, followed by Tata with 11.

Sandite basketball will look to snap their three-game losing streak Friday at 8:00 p.m. when they host Booker T. Washington (2-4, 1-4). Jenks will travel to No. 15 Broken Arrow (8-5, 2-2) Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Girls place third at Port City Classic, throttle Jenks at home

The Class 6A No. 14 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (8-6 overall, 4-3 conference) took third place at the Port City Classic Saturday night in Verdigris, beating Owasso 39-33, then rolled to a 53-32 beat-down of No. 18 Jenks (6-9, 2-4) Tuesday in conference action.

The Saturday game against Owasso (2-12) was a rematch of their 65-41 Tuesday conference rout, and this time it was a lot closer due to the absence of Journey Armstead and Hailey Jackson. Even without their two leading scorers, the Sandites never trailed in the second half due to a deep and talented bench.

Freshman Sakauri Wilson led the team with 12 points and five rebounds, followed by Darrian Jordan with 11 points. The girls trailed for less than a minute in the entire game, after a pair of free throws from Ellie Morrill put the Rams up 14-13 midway through the second quarter. Wilson made a three-point play for the lead, and though the Rams tied it twice after, they never reclaimed the advantage.

On Tuesday they got back Jackson, but continued to rest Armstead. As it turned out, they wouldn’t even come close to needing her. Madison Luciaro gave the visitors a 4-0 lead, but the Sandites responded with a 15-0 run to end the quarter.

Taiona Morris kicked off a six-point run to start the second quarter before Luciaro drained a three to break up the 21-point streak. Mikah Hampton responded with a three for the home team, and the Sandites coasted to a 30-12 halftime advantage.

Sand Springs opened the second half on a nine-point run for their biggest lead of the night at 39-12 before the Trojans responded with their own nine-point run. The Sandites emptied the bench in the fourth quarter.

Thirteen Sandites saw action and ten made their way into the scorebook. Wilson and Jackson led all scorers with 12 points apiece, matched by Jenks’s Luciaro. Hampton hit three threes for a career-high nine points, and Jill Twiehaus scored ten for the Trojans.

Lady Sandite Basketball will return to action Friday at home with a Frontier Valley Conference game against No. 10 Booker T. Washington (7-5, 4-2). Jenks had their Friday night game at Sapulpa canceled due to COVID-19 protocols and will instead travel to Broken Arrow (4-6, 1-3) Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Boys place fourth at Port City Classic, Marlo Fox named to All-Tournament Team

The Class 6A No. 20 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (5-6) suffered a pair of tough losses this weekend at the Port City Classic, settling for fourth place Saturday night at Victory Christian School. While they didn’t bring home a team trophy, Marlo Fox did bring home some hardware as an All-Tournament Team member.

The tournament was almost canceled after host Catoosa shut down all athletic operations due to COVID-19, but Victory Christian stepped up to host the boys bracket, while Verdigris hosted the girls. Sand Springs won their first game 54-45 against Collinsville, but fell 72-67 to Bishop Kelley and 52-50 to Victory Christian, both in down-to-the-wire fashion.

Fox was a bucket shy of tying his career-high against Bishop Kelley, putting up 32 to lead all scorers. The Sandites came back from a 14-point third quarter deficit and led 65-64 late in the fourth. Eli Wallace hit a three to reclaim the advantage, Fox drained a pair of free throws to tie it, but Griffin Been added another three and Matthew Plaisance ended the game with a pair of free throws.

Collin Morrison scored 19 to lead the Comets, who had four players in double digits. Corbin Fisher was the only other Sandite in double digits with 16. The Comets went on to fall 72-49 to Owasso in the championship round. Bishop Kelley is now 8-4 on the season, ranked No. 4 in Class 5A.

4A No. 4 Victory Christian (10-4) jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the third place game, but the Sandites battled back and Fisher hit back-to-back field goals for the 9-8 lead. Dwayne Grundy briefly tied it back up, but Fox drained his first of five threes and the Sandites wouldn’t relinquish their advantage till the fourth quarter.

By halftime the visitors were up 29-19 and they built their lead as high as 34-21 in the third quarter, but the home team buckled down to win the third 19-12 and Chris Mason tied it in the fourth at 42-42. Every time the Sandites pulled back in front, the Conquerors had an answer, and Josh Udoumoh gave them their first lead of the half with a three at 50-49.
