Carter Goodman lost a close 5-2 to decision to Ponca City’s Gabriel Roland at 132 that came down to the final seconds. He will have a bye in the first round of consolation.

Preston Medlin held a 4-2 lead against Muskogee’s Bobby Felts at 145 till late in the third when the Rougher reversed for nearfall points and a 6-4 win. He will have a bye in the first round of consolation due to an Owasso disqualification.

CPHS Baseball: Tatum Watie throws 9 strikeouts in 9-3 scrimmage win against Booker T. Washington

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team split its first two scrimmages of the season, falling 10-0 to perennial powerhouse Owasso on Monday, but made up for it with a 9-3 win against Booker T. Washington Tuesday.

Jaxon Skaggs got the start and the loss for Sand Springs against Owasso, giving up three hits and one run with no walks and one strikeout in four innings. Keaton Campbell threw three hits, four runs, and a walk in the fifth. Sebastian Cassidy tossed three hits, five runs, and four walks in the sixth. Jasper Adams pitched two hits, no runs, and a strikeout in the seventh.

The returning State Qualifiers from Owasso tossed 14 strikeouts and only one walk, and the Sandites came away with a .077 batting average. Ty Pennington and Gabe Glenn posted their only hits, both singles.

Tuesday saw a much stronger effort as the Sandites out-hit the Hornets 14 to 3. They also tossed 15 strikeouts, but gave up ten walks and committed four errors.

Northeastern State University-signee Tatum Watie got the start and the win, throwing a no-hitter with one run, nine strikeouts, and four walks in four innings. Brycen Peterman tossed three hits, two runs, five strikeouts, and three walks in three innings. Pennington threw one strikeout and three walks in the eighth inning.

Campbell went three-for-three at the plate with two doubles and one run. Pennington and Ethan Sartin led the team in runs with two apiece. Jacob Shields and Kaegan Murray had two RBI apiece. Sartin hit the first home run of the season, and Pennington and Hayden Blair both had doubles.

Sand Springs is entering its first season under interim Head Coach Matt Brown, who took over the program in September following the resignation of two-year coach James Garrison. Brown came to Sand Springs as an assistant in 2017. The Sandites went 22-11 overall last year and were 8-4 in district action.

Sandite baseball has seven more scrimmages before the season officially starts on March 2nd with a home game against Edmond Memorial. They will play in District 4 this year with Bartlesville, Broken Arrow, Edmond Memorial, Enid, Putnam City, Putnam City West, and Stillwater. They will host a scrimmage against Bartlesville Friday at 5:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Boys fall 69-56 to No. 1 Booker T. Washington, Fox scores 20

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (16-5, 8-5) took on the Frontier Valley Conference Champions from No. 1 Booker T. Washington (16-5, 12-1) on the road Tuesday night and were unable to repeat their January upset.

The two teams were very similar on shooting, rebounding, steals, and blocks. The Sandites had a more balanced team effort with six scoring players while the Hornets only had four, but they were unable to overcome lopsided fouls and Hornet star power. The teams were equally matched in the paint, but Washington had three more three-pointers and half as many fouls as the Sandites.

University of Kansas-commit Bryce Thompson led all scorers with 24 points, followed by University of Oklahoma-commit Trey Phipps with 21 points and Jalen Breath with 17. The Sandites also had three players in double-digits. Junior Marlo Fox scored 20, University of Central Oklahoma-commit Davon Richardson had his eighth double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Cason Savage added 10 points.

Sand Springs could not have played better in the first quarter and led for almost all of it. Thompson kicked off the game with a three, but Ryan Shoemaker hit a layup for the 6-5 lead in his first varsity start, and the Sandites didn’t trail till the 4:40 mark of the second quarter.

Sand Springs led 16-12 after the first quarter, but Washington reclaimed the lead with a six-point run capped by a layup from Breath. Sand Springs responded by scoring six of their own, including four from Fox, and they were up 29-25 late in the half, but the home team closed out with a ten-point run thanks to numerous Sandite fouls.

The Sandites won the third quarter 16-14. They fell behind 45-35 at the 4:23 mark, but finished the stanza 10-4 to enter the home stretch 49-45. Washington finally began to pull away with a seven-point run in the middle of the period for their biggest lead at 67-51.

Sandite basketball will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. with a regular season finale against No. 11 Broken Arrow (15-6, 7-5). The Tigers won their last meeting 63-51 during a 13-1 start to the season, but since then they are 2-5 and the Sandites will be looking for payback with home court advantage. The Hornets, who already clinched the FVC title, will wrap up the regular season on the road against Sapulpa (9-12, 4-8) Friday at 8:00 p.m. They previously beat the Chieftains 84-62 in December.

CPHS Basketball: Girls fall 59-49 to No. 3 Booker T. Washington, Armstead scores 21

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (14-7, 7-6) took on No. 3 Booker T. Washington (20-2, 12-1) Tuesday night at Nathan E. Harris Field House, and the Hornets picked up their sixth-straight conference win 59-49, despite a double-digit comeback effort from the Sandites.

The first half looked far different from your typical Sand Springs basketball game. Sophomore star Journey Armstead drew two fouls early in the first quarter and spent most of the half on the bench while Raegan Padilla led the team with nine points.

The Hornets snagged six offensive rebounds and four steals in the first period, while the Sandites had none of either, for a 20-13 lead. In both quarters the Sandites played close til the final minutes, then the Hornets ended the periods with exclamation marks.

Jade Shrum gave Sand Springs their only lead of the night with a three-pointer at 3-2. Bayleigh Cheney hit another three to cut their deficit to 16-13 before Aunisty Smith and Emmary Williams closed out the quarter.

In the second period Sophia Regalado, Padilla, and Leyshia Morris scored buckets to cut the deficit to 24-20, but Smith and Wyvette Mayberry hit back to back threes for their first double-digit lead with 2:17 in the half. They hit the gas from there and closed on a four-point run to make it 37-23.

It looked like the home team would run away with it in the third quarter. Armstead scored a three to start the half, but the Hornets went on a nine-point run and took their biggest lead at 49-28. Then came the Sandite resurgence. Armstead hit another three and Morris added two to end the third 51-35.

Sand Springs outscored their hosts 11-4 in the first three minutes of the final stanza to get back within single digits. Smith reclaimed the ten-point lead and Armstead took a hard spill at the 2:19 mark and didn’t re-enter the game. The impressive comeback effort came up short as the Hornets played keep-away in the final minutes.

Armstead led all scorers with 21 points, 19 of which came in the second half. Padilla scored 10 and eight Sandites made their way into the score book. Smith led the Hornets with 20 points, followed by Mayberry with 15.

Sand Springs basketball will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. with their final home game of the season against Broken Arrow (9-12, 5-8). They previously beat the Tigers 80-78 on the road. The Hornets will play a de facto Frontier Valley Conference title game at No. 7 Sapulpa (19-3, 12-1) Friday at 6:30 p.m. They previously beat the Chieftains 52-46, but Sapulpa can force a tie for the title with a payback win.
