CPHS Baseball: Banker strikes out seven, Sandites blank Broken Arrow 6-0

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (12-2, 3-0) earned their sixth-straight victory Monday evening against Broken Arrow (10-6, 5-2) with a 6-0 district shutout. They also won 13-5 Saturday against Joplin (5-2).

Undefeated senior Ben Banker (5-0, 6-0) got the win on the mound against Broken Arrow, throwing his first seven-inning shutout with seven strikeouts, three hits, and four walks. The Sandites recorded eight hits and three doubles in their third-straight win over the Tigers.

The game went scoreless till the bottom of the third when Seth Villines reached on an error and scored on a single from Tyler Ash. Ash came in on a single from Cal Watkins for the 2-0 lead.

The Tigers walked two in the fourth inning and both runners scored on sacrifice bunts. Brycen Peterman and Kyler Murray recorded RBIs to score Keaton Campbell and Ethan Sartin. Villines reached on an error in the bottom of the sixth, then Murray and Ash hit back-to-back doubles for the 6-0 advantage.

Broken Arrow stranded two in the sixth and two in the seventh but couldn’t hit pay dirt. Watkins caught a pop fly to secure the victory.

The Sandites will kick off a four-game road series Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. when they visit the Tigers on their home field. They will play Bartlesville Thursday, Yukon Saturday, and Ponca City Monday before returning to Sand Springs.

Five Sandites had pitching duty against Joplin in the second game of the Tiger/Zebra Classic in Pryor on Saturday. Games against Coweta and Booker T. Washington were rained out. Sand Springs scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed.

The Eagles walked Murray and Burks to start the game and Watkins drove in the first run with a double. Burks came in on a balk and Watkins scored on a sacrifice fly from Cale Savage. Joplin got on the board soon after with an RBI single from Blake Dean.

Watkins hit a double to score Peterman and Murray in the second inning. Sartin walked in on loaded bases in the second and hit an RBI single in the third to score Jacob Snodgrass for a 7-1 lead.

Ash (0-0, 3-2) made his season pitching debut, throwing four strikeouts, five walks, and two hits in just over two innings. He was relieved by Michael Miller in the bottom of the third. Miller gave up an RBI double and the Eagles scored again on a sacrifice fly.

The Sandites had their best inning in the fourth with four runs. Burks doubled and stole home, Watkins and Campbell both singled and scored on errors, and Sartin singled in Snodgrass once again.

Jaxon Skaggs (2-0) took over in the bottom of the fourth and was awarded the win. He walked one and gave up a two-run homer to Grant Jones, but went on to strike out three over two innings without relinquishing another base.

Sand Springs loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with two singles and a walk. Snodgrass doubled to score Burks and Cale Savage for the final runs of the game.

John Miller (1-0, 6-1) threw one walk and one strikeout in the sixth, and caught one runner stealing. Villines (2-0, 3-0) pitched one strikeout in the seventh.

CPHS Softball: Sandites sweep Sapulpa, Sabrina Usher hits grand slam

The Class 6A No. 18 ranked Charles Page High School slow pitch softball team (2-0) kicked off the season with a pair of wins Tuesday afternoon at No. 19 Sapulpa (0-4). The Lady Sandites won 19-10 in game one and 20-5 in the second half of the Highway 97 Rivalry double-header.

Sand Springs outhit their foes 28 to 13 in the first game. Elizabeth Luttrell hit two home runs and got the win on the mound, while Sabrina Usher hit a grand slam. The second game was even more dominant as the Sandites outhit the home team 24 to 9 with home runs from Reagan Rector, Luttrell, Felicity Horn, and Rachel Jones. Aliyah Taff got the win on the mound in the second battle.

Horn was a perfect seven-for-seven at the plate over the two games with four singles, a double, a triple, a homer, seven runs, and six RBI. Rector was five-for-five in game one and Avery Tanner was three-for-three in game two.

Luttrell threw an impressive seven strikeouts, giving up thirteen hits and seven walks in game one. Game two only went five innings due to the ten-run mercy rule. Taff pitched four innings and threw eight hits, two strikeouts, and seven walks.

Sapulpa was first on the board with a solo home run from Jessica Hobbs in the bottom of the first, but the visitors piled on thirteen runs in the top of the second. The Sandites recorded thirteen hits in the inning, including back-to-back homers. Usher cleared the bases for a 9-1 lead, then Luttrell followed it up with a solo shot two pitches later. Tanner capped the onslaught with a two-run triple before the melee came to a close.

Hobbs hit a second homer in the bottom of the fourth and Sierra Hughes had a two-run triple. In the fifth Hobbs and Kalyn Hearon hit back-to-back homers to cut it to 15-9. Luttrell hit another dinger in the sixth.

The Sandites took a 5-0 lead in game two and never looked back, scoring runs in all five innings. They led 20-1 before the Chieftains tried to make a comeback in the bottom of the fifth.

Rector homered on the first at-bat of the game, then Jones cleared the fence in the second inning to make it 3-0. Luttrell went yard in the top of the third, followed by a double from Mackenzie Bechtold and a triple from Horn. Horn hit a homer in the fourth, and Sapulpa’s Takyah Jamerson hit one in the fifth.
