CPHS Softball: Sandites sweep Sapulpa, Sabrina Usher hits grand slam
/The Class 6A No. 18 ranked Charles Page High School slow pitch softball team (2-0) kicked off the season with a pair of wins Tuesday afternoon at No. 19 Sapulpa (0-4). The Lady Sandites won 19-10 in game one and 20-5 in the second half of the Highway 97 Rivalry double-header.
Sand Springs outhit their foes 28 to 13 in the first game. Elizabeth Luttrell hit two home runs and got the win on the mound, while Sabrina Usher hit a grand slam. The second game was even more dominant as the Sandites outhit the home team 24 to 9 with home runs from Reagan Rector, Luttrell, Felicity Horn, and Rachel Jones. Aliyah Taff got the win on the mound in the second battle.
Horn was a perfect seven-for-seven at the plate over the two games with four singles, a double, a triple, a homer, seven runs, and six RBI. Rector was five-for-five in game one and Avery Tanner was three-for-three in game two.
Luttrell threw an impressive seven strikeouts, giving up thirteen hits and seven walks in game one. Game two only went five innings due to the ten-run mercy rule. Taff pitched four innings and threw eight hits, two strikeouts, and seven walks.
Sapulpa was first on the board with a solo home run from Jessica Hobbs in the bottom of the first, but the visitors piled on thirteen runs in the top of the second. The Sandites recorded thirteen hits in the inning, including back-to-back homers. Usher cleared the bases for a 9-1 lead, then Luttrell followed it up with a solo shot two pitches later. Tanner capped the onslaught with a two-run triple before the melee came to a close.
Hobbs hit a second homer in the bottom of the fourth and Sierra Hughes had a two-run triple. In the fifth Hobbs and Kalyn Hearon hit back-to-back homers to cut it to 15-9. Luttrell hit another dinger in the sixth.
The Sandites took a 5-0 lead in game two and never looked back, scoring runs in all five innings. They led 20-1 before the Chieftains tried to make a comeback in the bottom of the fifth.
Rector homered on the first at-bat of the game, then Jones cleared the fence in the second inning to make it 3-0. Luttrell went yard in the top of the third, followed by a double from Mackenzie Bechtold and a triple from Horn. Horn hit a homer in the fourth, and Sapulpa’s Takyah Jamerson hit one in the fifth.
Sandite Softball will return to action Thursday at 5:00 p.m. when they play a double header at No. 7 Owasso (4-4). Sapulpa will host 5A No. 18 Berryhill Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
