Sandite Cross Country gives best performance of season at Fayetteville

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Charles Page High School varsity cross country teams traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas this past weekend for the prestigious Chile Pepper Festival and several Sandites posted remarkable times and personal records in the 5K race.

Varsity Girls 5K

17:35.54 Cheyenne Walden 2nd Place
21:03.66 Tiqvah Soap 185th Place
21:30.42 Alexis Davis 230th Place
23:04.64 Sara Abbet 417th Place
23:10.52 Elizabeth Watts 424th Place
24:11.93 Chezney Kelley 496th Place (PR-1:42.67)

Varsity Boys 5K

17:24.19 Aden Baughman 243rd Place
17:56.24 Kaegan Murray 361st Place
17:59.24 Landin Green 373rd Place
18:16.33 Jacob Garbey 418th Place
18:18.66 Nelson Yazzie 424th Place (PR-0:50.34)
18:42.78 Ian Baustert 482nd Place (PR-0:19.22)
18:51.36 Jaden Weiser 502nd Place (PR-0:22.04)

Three-time State Champion Cheyenne Walden's seven-straight victory streak came to an end, but not due to a substandard performance. In fact, she was a mere half-second away from beating her personal record. In a field of 629 runners, she placed second with a time of 17:35.54, just a few steps behind Blue Springs South junior Victoria Findley who finished in 17:33.09. This is Walden's second time competing at the event, and she also placed second last year in an otherwise undefeated season. Her time was the sixth-best in the eleven-year history of the event. Prior to 2005, the girls only ran a 4K at the Chile Pepper Festival.

Overall, the Lady Sandites took 43rd place of 86 teams with an average time of 21:17.0. They improved by 21.8 seconds over last year's performance when they placed 42nd of 71 teams. Junior transfer Tiqvah Soap placed 185th with a time of 21:03.66. Freshman Chezney Kelley placed 496th with a personal record of 24:11.93, shaving nearly two minutes off her last week's performance.

The varsity boys improved by 0:32.2 seconds over their last year's performance for a team average of 17:58.9. They placed 66th of 99 teams compared to 64th of 84 teams last year. Sophomore state qualifier Aden Baughman led the team with a 243rd place finish out of 757 runners. He finished in 17:24.19, followed by freshman Kaegan Murray in 361st place with a personal record of 17:56.24. Sophomore Nelson Yazzie, senior Ian Baustert, and freshman Jaden Weiser all set personal records.

Both the boys and girls teams had their best performances of the season by significant margins. Prior to Fayetteville, the boys' best performance of the season was 18:02.6 and that was at Broken Arrow on a 300 meter short course. Their best true 5K was at Holland Hall with an average time of 18:49.9. The Chile Pepper marked a 0:51 second improvement over Holland Hall. The girls' best 5K of the season was also Holland Hall where they finished in 22:20.0. They knocked 1:03 off that time. Both performances were their best since last year's Regionals.

The cross country season is rapidly coming to a close with only two races left before the State Championship. The Sandites will return to action on Tuesday the Eleventh at the Frontier Valley Conference race at Bacone College in Muskogee.

Week Six 6A-II Rankings and Predictions; a look at this weekend's games

No. 1 Muskogee Roughers (Last week No. 3) vs No. 2 Booker T Washington Hornets (2)

Rafe Watkins's Muskogee Roughers (5-0, 2-0) came into the season highly ranked, but it wasn't high enough for them. Friday night on their home turf, the Roughers upset the top-ranked two-time defending State Champions from Bixby (2-3, 0-1) 45-42 in a wild aerial shootout. Muskogee quarterback Jacob Medrano finished 20-33-377-1 for four touchdowns, and running back Molijah Gilbert carried 20 times for 99 yards.

The Hornets (4-2, 2-0) completed their second-straight shutout of the season with a powerful 45-0 victory over Sapulpa (0-5, 0-2). QB Phillip Wheatley has accounts for the bulk of the Hornet offense and surpassed 1000 yards for the season Friday night. The run game is stacked with Rylan McQuarters, Tyler Holmes, and Garrick Jackson all in triple digits for the year.

The Pick: Muskogee 43, Booker T 35

No. 3 Bixby Spartans (1) vs No. 15 Sapulpa Chieftains (15)

The Spartans (2-3, 0-1) may have lost their battle with the Roughers, but it wasn't due to poor performance. QB Tanner Griffin was 33-49-318-1 for four touchdowns and Tucker Pawley ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns. The Spartans have had a tough schedule thus far in the season, but should have an easy time getting their first district win Friday night in Sapulpa (0-5, 0-2).

Sapulpa posted a mere 54 yards passing and 67 yards rushing in their sixth-straight loss Friday against Booker T.

The Pick: Bixby 60, Sapulpa 3

No. 4 Midwest City Bombers (4) vs No. 11 Choctaw Yellowjackets (10)

The Midwest City Bombers' (3-2, 2-0) first four games this season were decided by a touchdown or less, but they broke that streak Friday night at Deer Creek, scoring their first shutout since mid-2014. Astin Anderson finished with 130 yards on 23 carries, but it was the defense that starred, giving up an incredible 3 first downs and 78 yards of total offense in the 35-0 rout.

Choctaw (2-3, 0-2) led the Enid Plainsmen with a minute and a half left last week before giving up an interception deep in Enid territory and allowed their opponents to score a touchdown with 17 seconds left for the 43-39 win.

The Pick: Midwest City 31, Choctaw 14

No. 5 Sand Springs Sandites (5) vs No. 14 Ponca City Wildcats (14)

The Sandites (3-2, 1-0) secured their third-straight win Friday night at home in a non-conference matchup with Yukon (0-5) and dominated the entirety. The visiting Millers scored before either offense ever stepped foot on the field, returning the opening kickoff 95 yard for a touchdown. That would be their last score till the fourth quarter as the Sand Springs defense drilled the Millers with seven tackles for loss totaling 35 yards, as well as two sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. While the run-game has dominated the Sand Springs offense this year, QB Hunter Greathouse had his time to shine, throwing 13-24-192-0 for two touchdowns, and secured his career-best run game with eight carries for 58 yards and a touchdown. Payton Scott netted his fifth-straight triple digit run game with 22 carries for 144 yards and a touchdown.

Ponca City (1-4, 0-2) lost their second-straight game to Bartlesville (2-3, 1-1) Friday night, despite a solid passing performance from Brice McDougal. The Wildcat QB finished 19-37-176-1 with two touchdowns, but the run game amounted to a mere 29 yards as a team with no touchdowns. Kicker Mitchell Wilson sank a pair of field goals. The return game was strong, averaging about 14 yards per punt return and 16 yards per kickoff return. The Sand Springs special teams have had a hard time stopping returns this season, so the Wildcats will likely look to capitalize on that.

The Pick: CPHS 40, Ponca 17

No. 6 Lawton Wolverines (7) vs No. 12 Stillwater Pioneers (11)

Lawton (2-3, 1-1) got back in the win column with a big district battle against Putnam City (3-2, 1-1) last week, racking up a 20-0 lead in the first half. Sophomore backup QB Kyler Jenderseck replaced Zack Hanna who tore his MCL in practice this week. He completed 5 of 12 passes for 48 yards and scored on touchdown on the ground. The defense was the MVP of the game, making several big plays including a tipped pass in the endzone by Kejuan Neal to prevent a touchdown. Miles Davis recovered a muffed punt at the Putnam 22, leading to a touchdown run on the next play by Tre Curry. Curry carried the offense with 29 runs for 168 yards and two touchdowns.

Stillwater (2-3, 0-2) made a big case for themselves early in the season, going 2-1 against ranked 6A-I opponents. Since then, they've given up two-straight district losses, 21-14 to Deer Creek (1-4, 1-1) and 10-7 to Putnam City West (4-1, 2-0). The Pioneers traveled to Putnam Friday and trailed 10-7 with 3:34 left and a fourth and goal conundrum. They went for the touchdown instead of the field goal and were stuffed. The Stillwater defense was stout through the game, giving up only ten rushing yards till the final minutes when the PC QB scrambled 81 yards and nearly scored. The Pioneers rallied for turnover on downs deep in their red, but QB Garrett Leming threw an interception three plays later. Leming only completed 2 of 12 passes for 10 yards with 3 interceptions. The run game was strong with the Pioneers, however, with a little over 200 yards between three carriers.

The Pick: Lawton 23, Stillwater 10

No. 7 Putnam City West Patriots (8) vs No. 8 Putnam City Pirates (6)

A rivalry game with major district implications; Putnam City (3-2, 1-1) and Putnam West (4-1, 2-0) are both top dogs in their district and both have a lot to play for. The Patriots look to continue their undefeated district winning streak and hold themselves to a one-loss season. The Pirates need to reassert themselves after going down 26-14 against Lawton.

The Patriots won a close one over Stillwater (2-3, 0-2), only coming up with a 10-7 victory, but it was a victory nonetheless. They're one of only two teams left without a district loss and are shaping up to possibly make their first playoff appearance of the twenty-first century. They have already matched their record from last season, their best since 2000, and can only go up from here. QB Trey Gooch and Memphis commit WR Nick Robinson have brought heavy offense all season until they encountered Stillwater, and hope to build momentum before their crucial match up against Midwest City next week.

The Pirates have only two losses this season, both to solid opponents in Bixby (2-3, 0-1) and Lawton (2-3, 1-1). QB A.J. Newsome was 12-28-168-0 passing against Lawton and led on the ground with 20 carries for 84 yards and two touchdowns. The special teams were impressive, averaging fifteen yards per kick return and 29 yards per punt return.

The Pick: Putnam West 23, Putnam City 21.

No. 9 Deer Creek Antlers (9) vs No. 10 Enid Plainsmen (12)

Deer Creek (1-4, 1-1) has had a hell of a schedule this year, starting the season with three straight losses to top-ten 6A-I opponents before finally finding a win against Stillwater. In week two of districts they went up against Midwest City and were shutout 35-0, their first shutout loss since 2011. The Antlers were held to a mere 78 yards of total offense and three first downs. QB Hunter Freese completed only 6 of 18 passes for 45 yards and was sacked three times. With the exception of the last game, the Antlers have actually played fairly well this season, averaging 24 points per game in their first four encounters, before being smothered by the powerful Bomber defense.

Enid (2-3, 1-1) secured a big upset over Choctaw (2-3, 0-2) last week, coming from behind for a 43-39 win. The Plainsmen averaged 5 yards per carry for 236 total, and first-time starting QB Mason Skrimager was 31 of 41 for 233 passing with no interceptions.

The Pick: No consensus. Scott Emigh says 28-14 Deer Creek, Virgil Noah says 28-14 Enid.

No. 13 Bartlesville Bruins (13)

The Bartlesville Bruins (2-3, 1-1) will take a bye week after winning a district match against Ponca City (1-4, 0-2) Friday night. QB Garrett Meidl was 16-26-294-1 with three touchdowns; two by air and one on the ground.

District Two Standings

Three-time State Champion Cheyenne Walden secured her seventh-straight first place finish with a time of 18:34.9, a full 29 seconds ahead of her closest competitor and 1:14 over the third place finisher. Walden and Shay Staton, of Bartlesville, were the only two runners from Oklahoma to finish in the top-ten. The Lady Sandites competed in a joint 5A/6A 5K race, but Walden's time also would have given her first place in the 2A/3A/4A race with a 35 second lead on the top finisher in that division. Overall the girls placed 18th out of 33 schools with an average time of 23:24.8.

Freshman Chezney Kelley led the JV girls with a personal-record 25:54.6 finish for 57th place. Her time would have earned her 174th in varsity. The JV girls finished in 13th place out of 16 teams with an average time of 28:11.6.

The varsity boys were led by Aden Baughman with a time of 18:03.5 for 56th Place. The boys placed 24th of 38 teams with an average time of 19:13.5, their best showing at the Jamboree since 2012 when they had State Qualifier Andrew Coleman. The Sandites have improved by 1:14.3 since 2014 and have their first State Qualifier since Coleman in Baughman, who placed 69th at State last year as a freshman.

Danny Murray set a PR of 20:48 to lead the JV boys in 73rd Place. The JV boys took 17th of 36 teams.

The Sandites will return to action this Saturday at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Last year Walden rode an eight-straight winning streak before coming in runner-up at Fayetteville, twelve seconds behind Jackson, Missouri's Chelsea Drum. Drum's 17:46.23 performance that year was her personal-best to-date. She is now a freshman at Ole Miss. Walden's personal best is 17:35.02 and she has won her last seven-straight events, but will face tough competitors from as many as seventy schools from several states.

The Sapulpa Lady Chieftain volleyball team (3-12) hosted the No. 15 ranked Charles Page High School (22-13) and the Lady Sandites defeated their Highway 97 rivals in straight sets for the first time since 2013. The last two years also went to the Sandites, but those matches were close 3-2 losses for the Chieftains. Sapulpa hasn't won a varsity volleyball match against Sand Springs since 2012.

Sand Springs came into the match off of a pair of back-to-back losses to No. 7 Broken Arrow (21-10) and 5A No. 5 Collinsville (23-9) and was looking to build some momentum to ride into Regionals. The girls just have two matches left before the Regional Tournament, and will take on 5A No. 6 Coweta (24-15) Thursday.

Sapulpa won their last match 3-0 with a series of very close sets against Will Rogers and hoped to celebrate Senior Night with a rivalry win, but the Sandites weren't having it.

Sophomore Holly Kersgieter served an ace on the opening rally to set the tone for the game and junior Ohio State commit Gloria Mutiri followed it up with a kill off MaKenzie Ward's set. The Sandites gave up three straight points on errors and a kill by Macaila Holland and briefly gave Sapulpa the lead before going on a ten-point streak for the 12-4 advantage.

Sapulpa picked up a point on a service error from freshman Devree Youngblood, senior Kyndall Hoey scored a hard spike past Mutiri, and Holland served an ace to cut it to 12-7, but Mutiri got the Sandites back on track with a kill off Ward. Madison Burris served an ace and set up kills for Mutiri Kersgieter to make it 19-8 before Grace Hamilton hit an ace to end a five-point streak.

Mutiri and Makenna Cypert scored on a block, Mutiri got a kill off Burris, and Ward hit back-to-back aces to make it 23-10. The Chieftains got competitive and Amy Blevins set up kills for Hamilton and Holland, but they were too deep in the hole and gave up the 25-12 loss on an error.

In the second set the Sandites took an early 5-0 lead off four errors and a kill from Mutiri before the Chieftains got on the board with a kill from Holland. Burris scored a solo block, Mutiri followed it with a kill, and Burris added her second ace of the evening before a consecutive contact call made it 8-3.

Mutiri scored three straight on a kill and two aces to make it 13-6. Burris scored another ace before the game was over and set up a pair of kills for Mutiri to end the game 25-11.

The Sandites struggled with errors in the third set and were basically competing against themselves for most of it. Sapulpa scored only five points in the game, but the Sandites gave up sixteen points on errors.

After Youngblood scored the opening point on a set from Ward, the Sandites gave up six-straight errors, followed by a kill from Hamilton and another error to make it 8-1 in the home team's favor.

The girls rallied from there and scored seven-straight with a pair of aces and a kill from Youngblood, as well as a pair of blocks and a kill from Mutiri to tie it 8-8. An error gave Sapulpa the lead once again, but Mutiri tied it at 9-9 with a kill, then combined on a block with Cypert to take the lead once and for all. The rest of the game was still neck-and-neck due to continued Sandite errors, but aces from Mutiri and Burris and kills from Youngblood helped push the Sandites to a 25-21 victory for the sweep.

Mutiri led in scoring with eighteen kills, four blocks, and three aces, followed by Youngblood with nine kills, one assist, one block, and three aces. Madison Burris scored five points on four aces and a block, plus nine assists. Ward did the bulk of the setting with eleven assists and added two aces.

Holland scored six kills and an ace for the Chieftains, followed by Hamilton and Holly Tyler with four kills each. Amy Blevins registered ten assists and one kill.

The Chieftains celebrated Senior Night before the game and will be graduating eleven players this year. They not only presented their seniors with flowers, but also showed quality sportsmanship in giving flowers to the Sand Springs seniors as well.

Sapulpa has one more match before Regionals at 5A #6 Coweta (24-15) next Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Lady Sandite Softball takes second place at Tahlequah Tournament

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (24-7) traveled to Northeastern State University this weekend for the Tahlequah Tournament and came in second place by a single run. After winning their first four games, the Lady Sandites met the Union Redskins (25-10) in the finals. Both teams came in runners-up in their districts this past week and both are looking to put their best foot forward in their upcoming Regional Tournaments.

Union came through the larger of the two pools and had to win five games to get to the finals. The Redskins won 9-1 over Tahlequah (19-12), 9-1 over Fort Gibson (26-9), and 10-1 over Booker T Washington (8-23) in day one. On Saturday they topped Locust Grove (11-19) 16-0 and Berryhill (15-19) 7-2 to earn their way into the championship round.

The Sandites did themselves in early in the top of the first, giving up three hits, an error, and a pair of passed balls. MacKenzie Addis hit a single to start the game. Sammy Ibison reached on an error and Lexy Dobson singled to load the bases.

Sophomore pitcher Jacie Taber (9-5) struck out Sammy Dutton swinging, but Britton Clark singled to score Addis and reload the bases. Ibison and Dobson both scored on passed balls before Taber struck out Erika Reed and Toni Weese to bring the inning to a close.

The Sandites failed to get on base in the bottom of the inning and neither team reached in the second.

The Redskins added their fourth run in the top of the third. Taber struck out Dutton and Clark, but gave up a single to Dobson and walked Ibison and Reed to load the bases. Ibison scored on a wild pitch, but further damage was averted as freshman catcher Sabrina Usher caught a foul ball from Weese to end the inning and strand the runners.

The Sandites had their big inning in the bottom of the third. Cameron Clemons reached on an error, Elizabeth Luttrell singled, and Felicity Horn hit a single to score Clemons. Jessica Collins hit a two run double to bring in Luttrell and Horn, but was left stranded as Taber and Sydney Pennington both sent balls to Dobson in center field.

Both teams got their defense in check in the fourth inning and neither team got on base again till the sixth. Reed was walked in the top of the inning but was left stranded and Pennington was stranded on second after hitting a double.

Taber got the loss on the mound despite giving up only four hits, two earned runs, and three walks against eight strikeouts.

The Lady Sandites have only two games left this season before the Regional Tournament. The girls will host Skiatook (11-13) Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. and will wrap up the regular season Thursday at Bartlesville (12-19).

Lady Sandite Softball hammers Jay 14-2 in three innings

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (23-6) dropped the hammer on Jay (16-15) Saturday afternoon at the Northeastern State University high school tournament and needed only three innings to secure a 14-2 victory. Madelyn Blair (10-2) got the start and win on the mound with one hit, two runs, and three walks in one inning. Makenna Skaggs (0-0) made her varsity pitching debut and threw two strikeouts with one hit in two innings at the mound.

Jay took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first after Marissa Lokey and Jessie Summerfield both drew walks. Jade Creekkiller reached on a fielder's choice to out courtesy runner McKenzie Buzzard at third, and Caitlin Taylor walked to load the bases. Haley Dry sent a double into left field to score Summerfield and Creekkiller for the brief lead, but it wouldn't last long.

Dry went to the mound in the bottom of the first and gave up a walk to Felicity Horn who scored on a triple from Oklahoma State commit Sydney Pennington. Jacie Taber walked and Blair reached on a failed fielder's choice to load the bases. Skaggs went in to run for Blair. Sabrina Usher reached on a failed fielder's choice to score Pennington, Cameron Clemons walked to score Taber, and Kimi Presnell reached on an error to score Skaggs and Usher. Elizabeth Luttrell singled to score Clemons for the 6-2 advantage, but was put out advancing on the play and Jessica Collins grounded out to third to bring the scoring melee to an end.

Skaggs took the mound in the top of the second and struck out Jade Frazier swinging. Lokey popped an infield fly to Presnell at second base, and Kyla Rogers was put out at first on a dropped third strike.

The Sandites tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the second. Pennington and Taber were both put out to start the inning, but the girls got on track as Blair reached on an error and Usher hit a single. Skaggs ran courtesy for Blair and scored on a single from Clemons. Usher came home on a single from Presnell, and Luttrell singled to score Clemons. Horn put the exclamation mark on the inning with a two-run triple to score Presnell and Luttrell, but was put out at home to bring the inning to a close at 11-2.

Creekkiller hit a double in the top of the third but was left stranded to bring in the Sandites for the duration.

Collins drew a walk to start things off and was joined on base by Pennington and Taber who hit singles. Collins scored on a passed ball and Usher hit a two-run single to bring in Pennington and Taber as time expired and the girls won 14-2.
