CPHS Track: Sandites set 26 personal records at Tahlequah Classic

The Charles Page High School track and field teams failed to crown a champion for the first time this season, but had two runners-up and 26 personal-best finishes at the Reasor’s Track Classic in Tahlequah Friday.

Aden Baughman settled for second in the 800-meter run for the first time this season, despite having his best performance of the year. He finished in 1:53.83, his best mark since the 2017 Meet of Champions, and was only 0.03 behind 5A State Champion Jack Vincent.

Joel Mackey earned his first silver medal of the season the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.15 and also took third in the 200 in 22.21.

Jaelyn Jackson took third in the 400 with a PR 51.28 and Jacob Smith placed fourth in the 3200 in 10:26.63.

Matt Wilkerson crushed his previous personal record in the 100 hurdles. He finished the 110 in 17.93 to earn his first team points in sixth place.

Two Sandites earned points in discus, each with personal records. Mitchell Mefford threw 149’07 for third place and Riley Magee threw 137’06 for fifth.

Mackenzie Rader tied her personal record in the high jump, clearing 4’08” for fourth place.

The boys placed seventh in a field of fourteen and the girls finished twelfth out of fifteen. Owasso won the meet by significant margins in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions.

The Sand Springs teams will return to action Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the Yukon Classic.

CPHS Track: Sandites place third at Claremore with two champions

The Charles Page High School track and field teams traveled to Claremore Thursday and the boys earned their first third-place mark of the season with two champions in a field of sixteen teams.

The boys only have three top-three finishes in the past four years, and this was their first in a meet of ten or more teams. The boys placed eleven in the top-six. The girls had four top-six finishers and placed twelfth out of fifteen teams.

Aden Baughman won the 800-meter run in 2:00.61 and came in runner-up in the 1600. Joel Mackey won the 200 in 23.53 seconds, and placed fourth in the 100. Mitchell Mefford came in second in both discus and shot put. He threw 143’03” in discus and a career-best 40’11” in shot put.

Nelson Yazzie placed fourth in the 1600 and fifth in the 3200 with a personal-best 10:59.07. Alex Newport placed fifth in the 110 hurdles and the 4x200 relay team placed fifth as well.

Mackenzie Rader placed third in the 100 hurdles, third in the high jump with a PR 4’08”, and fourth in the long jump. Erika Baker took fifth in the 3200.

Personal records were hard to come by as the athletes had to contend with substantial winds gusting well over 20 MPH.

The Sandites will return to action at the Owasso Ram Relays on March 29th.

CPHS Track: Sandites place fourth at Bartlesville, win four gold medals

The Charles Page High School boys’ Track and Field team had one of their best finishes in recent years at last weekend’s Bartlesville Bruin Classic. They brought home four gold medals for the first time since the 2018 Owasso Invitational and finished fourth in an eighteen-team field.

For comparison, the boys placed seventh of eighteen two weeks ago in Owasso. They have only finished top-four three times in the past three seasons, and this is the first time they’ve done so in a field of ten or more teams. They sent a total of 24 athletes to Bartlesville, their deepest roster in the past three seasons, and competed in twelve of seventeen events.

The girls settled for seventeenth place out of nineteen teams, sending only nine competitors. They only entered six events and voided eleven.

Aden Baughman won both the 400 meter dash and the 800 meter run. He made his 400 debut in 51.41, the best time for a Sandite in the past three seasons. He finished the 800 in 1:57.73. Joel Mackey won the 200 in 22.60 and placed third in the 100 with a time of 11.29. Mitchell Mefford won the Discus throw with a PR distance of 148’02”.

The boys’ relay team took third place in the 4x800, finishing 30 seconds behind Bartlesville in 8:50.81. Jacob Smith placed fourth in the 1600 with a PR 4:47.32.

Mackenzie Rader had several impressive performances. She placed sixth in the 100 hurdles with a career-best 18.17 finish, sixth in the high jump at 4’06”, and fourth in long jump with a PR 15’09.5”. Her long jump was the best Sandite jump in the past three season.

Erika Baker set a PR of 6:30.4 in the 1600. Sara Abbet set a PR of 6:44.82 in the 1600. Matt Wilkerson set two personal records: 18.45 in the 110, and 46.33 in the 300. Alex Newport ran a PR 46.85 in the 300, and Knox Goggins ran a PR of 53.61. Nicholas Sango set a PR of 12.14 in the 100. Caleb James ran a PR 5:35.36 in the 1600. Alejandro Lopez had a PR long jump of 18’04.00”, the best Sandite jump since State Qualifier Colton Washington in 2017. Knox Goggins had a PR long jump of 16’02.00”. Riley Magee threw a PR 107.08” in discus.

9X State Champion Cheyenne Walden transfers from OSU to Grand Canyon University

Cheyenne Walden, the most decorated athlete in Charles Page High School history, recently announced her decision to transfer from Oklahoma State University to Grand Canyon University for the Spring 2019 semester. She will be immediately eligible to compete in the Spring season.

Walden won nine individual State Championships in her time at Sand Springs. She won the State Cross Country meet from 2013 through 2016, the 3200-meter track meet from 2015 through 2017, and the 1600-meter track meet in 2016 and 2017.

Walden signed with the OSU Cowgirls in high school and immediately began competing as a true freshman. She ran in five cross country meets, finished fifteenth at the Big 12 Championships, and 27th in the NCAA Midwest Regional. She earned All-Big 12 honors and was an NCAA qualifier.

In the Spring track season she placed third in the one-mile run at the Texas Tech Corky Classic and competed in the one-mile and 3,000 meter runs at the Big 12 Championships.

Walden also took up steeplechase this past season and won 2,000 meter title at the Tulsa Duels. She placed top ten in six races and earned All-Big 12 honors in the 3,000 meter race.

Grand Canyon University is a private Christian university in Phoenix, Arizona. The Antelopes compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Western Athletic Conference. They are the defending WAC Outdoor Track Champions, and have won three straight WAC Indoor Championships. They finished sixth in the WAC Cross Country Championships.
