CPHS Basketball: Girls place sixth at loaded Bixby Tournament

In a tournament so loaded that the defending 5A State Champions only finished in seventh place, the Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team settled for sixth after going 1-2 this past weekend. Their two losses came to perennial Edmond powerhouses, and they won a consolation semifinal game against 5A No. 2 Piedmont.

On Thursday the girls were victimized by unfortunate seeding as they had to take on 6A No. 3 Edmond North (6-0), the defending tournament champions. Journey Armstead scored 14 points in the 47-29 loss, but was the only Lady Sandite in double digits. Laci Steele scored 20 for the Huskies, who won the battle at the boards and came away with more turnovers.

In consolation Sand Springs won 46-37 against the defending 5A champions from Piedmont (1-3) behind a 21-point effort from Armstead, and Darrian Jordan added another 11. The Sandites led 10-3 after the first quarter and 22-20 at the half. Armstead and Hailey Jackson had seven-rebounds apiece and Armstead added a team-best four assists.

On Saturday the girls came back from a 10-6 deficit in the first quarter to lead 21-15 at halftime and 30-28 late in the third against No. 16 Edmond Memorial (3-3). Lexi Hensley tied it up late in the third and Baylor Franz went three-for-three at the charity stripe after taking a foul on the buzzer-shot.

The Sandites never reclaimed the lead but were competitive throughout the final stanza and fell 46-41. Franz led all scorers with 21 points, and was the only Bulldog in double digits. Armstead led Sand Springs once again, this time with 15 points. 6’2” starter Layne Kirkendoll was unavailable for the tournament and the Bulldogs used their height advantage to out-rebound the Sandites 30 to 16.

The Lady Sandites (3-2) dropped from 9th to 12th in the Class 6A coaches’ poll on Monday. They are 1-0 in Frontier Valley Conference play and will look to remain undefeated when they travel to unranked Muskogee (1-3, 0-1) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for their last game of 2020. The girls have won six-straight meetings with the Roughers, dating back to 2016.

The varsity boys will not travel with the Lady Sandites on Tuesday due to quarantine protocols following a positive COVID-19 test within the team.

CPHS Basketball: Jason Clark scores 24 against Bartlesville, next three games canceled

It’s been a tough week for the Class 6A No. 15 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (2-1, 0-1). On Tuesday they suffered a 75-56 upset in their Frontier Valley Conference opener at unranked Bartlesville (1-1, 1-1). On Wednesday they found out they would have to cancel all of their games through the new year.

On Monday the Sandites beat host Inola 56-44 in the first round of the Jerry O’Quin Tournament, and they were slated to play Stilwell in the semifinals on Thursday. They will be opting out of the remainder of that tournament, and will cancel their December 15th conference game at Muskogee due to a positive COVID-19 test on the team. The junior varsity boys game against Muskogee has also been canceled.

The feisty Bruins haven’t had a winning season since joining the FVC in 2014, but that hasn’t stopped them from playing the spoiler and stealing upsets from higher ranked teams almost annually. Neither team has gotten a clean sweep in a season with more than one meeting, and the Bruins’ Tuesday win tied the series at 6-6 in the Eric Savage era. Sand Springs will get the opportunity to avenge the loss on February 5th.

Sand Springs never led by more than three points, and had their last advantage at 12-9 late in the first quarter. Adam Nakvinda scored twelve points in that quarter for the Bruins, including the game-tying three and go-ahead bucket.

Despite playing from behind, the Sandites hung close throughout the first half. Marlo Fox tied it at 22-22 with a three and Cason Savage tied it at 28-28 with another three. Aadhi Ayyappan took the final lead with a three, David Castillo added two from the stripe, and the Bruins took a 33-31 advantage into the locker room after a three from Jason Clark.

Bartlesville put it away in the third quarter, however, outscoring the Sandites 23-11 after hitting three-straight threes to open the half on a 12-point run. They also won the fourth quarter 19-14.

The Sandites were outrebounded, outblocked, outshot, and committed more penalties, but they did win the turnover battle with 11 steals. Bartlesville shot 47% in the field, but the Sandite basket had a lid and they only shot 31%. Both teams did well at the charity stripe.

Jason Clark scored a career-high 24 points, more than his previous two games combined, to lead all scorers, and Fox added 11 points to put two Sandites in double digits. Nakvinda scored a career-high 23 to lead the Bruins, followed by Castillo with 20 and Jordan Carter with 11.

Sand Springs will aim to reopen their season January 5th with a conference road game at No. 20 Bixby (1-0, 1-0). Bartlesville will compete at the Bishop Kelley Invitational Thursday at 8:30 p.m. against the host team.

CPHS Basketball: Girls rout Bartlesville 67-31, Armstead scores 21

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team is 2-0 for the first time since 2017 after rolling to a dominant 67-31 win against Bartlesville (0-2. 0-2) Friday night in their Frontier Valley Conference opener. More impressively, they have yet to trail by even a single point this season.

Sand Springs put the game away in the first quarter with a 29-5 lead, snagging seven steals and shooting 11-of-13 on field goals. Journey Armstead banked in a three, Hailey Jackson scored on a steal, then Armstead snagged another takeaway and passed it to Darrian Jordan who made a three-point play off a foul for the 8-0 advantage within the first minute. Bayleigh Cheney hit a pair of threes to make it 16-3, then the visitors went on a 13-point run before Kate Gronigan made a layup to end the stanza.

The Sandites got in early foul trouble, with Jackson and Layne Kirkendoll picking up three apiece in the first quarter. They switched to a less aggressive zone defense in the second half, giving the Bruins more shooting opportunities and snagging less takeaways. The final three quarters amounted to a much closer score of 38-26, still in the visitors’ favor, however. The Bruins never cut it closer than a 26-point deficit after the first quarter, and the Sandites led by as much as 38 after an 11-point run in the fourth quarter.

Eleven Sandites saw action in the game and nine made their way onto the scoreboard. Armstead led the Sandites for the second game in a row and the 23rd time in her career, putting up 21 points with three threes, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Freshman star Sakauri Wilson matched her last week’s performance of 11 points, along with two steals, two rebounds, and three assists.

Lady Sandite Basketball will return to action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against No. 3 Edmond North (3-0) in the first round of the Bixby Invitational. Bartlesville will play 5A No. 13 Shawnee (0-1) Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in the Bishop Kelley Invitational.

CPHS Basketball: Boys beat Inola 56-44, Marlo Fox scores 28

The Class 6A No. 15 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team is 2-0 for the fourth straight year after escaping Inola (0-2) in the first round of the Jerry O’Quin Tournament Monday night. The Sandites beat the home team 56-44 after holding the Longhorns to only three points in the third quarter.

Inola played a close, streaky game against the Sandites and led 24-22 at halftime. The Sandites needed back-to-back threes from Marlo Fox to take their first lead at 8-4, and the senior star added two free throws and a layup to tie it at 12-12 before the first buzzer. He added five more points in the second quarter, aided by a layup from Daren Hawkins and a free throw from Trevor Stone to lead 20-12 before Caden Thomas and the home team stormed back to take the lead.

The game tied again at 26-26 before a putback from Ethan Oakley gave the visitors the lead for good. Sand Springs scored 16-straight points and had their biggest advantage at 47-29 before the Longhorns rattled off ten in a row to try and battle back.

Fox finished the game with a career-high 28 points, including five three-pointers, along with six rebounds and three steals. Jason Clark was the only other Sandite in double digits, with 11 points. Inola had three players in double digits. Norman led his team with 11 points, followed by Thomas and Garrett Cummins with ten each.

Sandite Basketball will open up Frontier Valley Conference play Tuesday evening at Bartlesville (0-1, 0-1). The boys will return to Inola Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for the tournament semifinals. Inola will play in the consolation semifinals Friday at 8:30 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites rout NOAH 84-30 in season-opener

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team started the season with a bang Thursday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House, bulldozing the Northeast Oklahoma Association of Homeschools 84-30 in front of a small crowd of masked-up fans.

The lopsided event marked the second-largest win of Josh Berry’s two year stint as head coach of the Lady Sandites. All twelve of his available players saw action, eleven made their way into the scorebook, and most of his backups saw the same playing time as the starters.

The Jaguars played somewhat close through the first half and only trailed 34-20 going into the locker room. Then the Sandites scored 25-straight points in the third quarter to put the game safely out of reach, and ended the game on a 20-point run.

“We’ve got to clean up offensively,” said Berry. “That third quarter we finally played the kind of defense I thought we could play. I think we’ve got to get some more out of our inside play a little bit. Other than that I thought our guards played well. We’ve got to make some more shots than we did tonight. We’ve just got to keep getting better each day.”

Junior standout Journey Armstead led her team in almost every game last year, and continued that trend with 26 points against the Jags. Her younger sister, Sakauri Wilson, made her freshman debut with 11 points, seven rebounds, and eight steals. The two sisters had a team-high four assists apiece.

Layne Kirkendoll also made her varsity debut with four points, three rebounds, and three steals. The 6’2” junior wasn’t allowed to compete at the varsity level last year after transferring from Jenks, but she is now cleared for competition and brings much-needed height to the team. “It helps a whole lot, especially when we get ready to go against the 6A giants that we go against,” said Berry. “She’s going to get better as it goes on. Having her out there helps us a lot.”

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to make an impact on the season. Scrimmages this week were closed to spectators. There will be no general admission to home games this season. The few seats that were available were sold as season-tickets to keep attendance low, and masks are required. The team has also had to deal with quarantines throughout the preseason.

“I think it’s a disadvantage to everyone,” said Coach Berry. “I talk to the girls every day about it. Every day that we get to practice, every day we get to play is just a blessing for us. That’s another day for our seniors - to be together with them. That’s what it’s about right now, making sure that they get as many practices in, as many games as they can for this senior class. It’s not fair for them with a season like this, but at least we get to have one.”

The Lady Sandites will kick off Frontier Valley Conference action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Bartlesville before competing in the Bixby Invitational next weekend. NOAH (2-5) will return to action Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against the Christian Home Educators Fellowship (2-1).

CPHS Basketball: Sandites pummel Jaguars 103-67 in season-opener

It had been a long time since the Sand Springs boys’ basketball team scored 100 points in a single game - if ever. Sandite Pride’s records are incomplete, but we can safely say that Thursday’s season-opening 103-67 win over the NOAH Jaguars (2-4) was at least the highest-scoring game of the Eric Savage era.

“I liked our energy, our focus and our intensity,” said Savage. now in his eighth year as a Sandite. “Just the excitement of getting to play a game again, I think really brought a lot of energy tonight.”

Just getting to play again will be a big motivator for the Sandites, who saw their dream season cut short this March. The boys won Regional and Area tournaments last season but the arrival of COVID-19 in Oklahoma led to the cancelation of the State Tournament. They ended the year 19-7 with wins over the No. 1 and No. 3 ranked teams.

Twelve Sandites saw action in the game against the Northeast Oklahoma Association of Homeschools and all twelve made their way into the scorebook, with four players earning double-digits. Marlo Fox led his team with 23 points, a modest score for the senior standout who has led his team on 17 occasions. Close behind him was Cason Savage with a career-best 20 points and Jason Clark with a career-best 15.

“We had a lot of contribution up and down the lineup tonight but I thought Marlo and Cason were really good early in the first half and kind of set the tone of what you expect from your senior leader guards. They were distributing the ball, but scored when they needed to,” said Savage.

The Jaguars tried to hang close early in the game, and led at 10-8 before Cason Savage dropped a three to kick off a 12-point run. Sand Springs took a 55-30 lead into the locker room and coasted through the second half with lots of contribution from the bench. Their biggest lead came at 103-64 after Damien Williams scored through a foul and sank the bonus point.

The Sandites entered the season ranked No. 15 in the Class 6A coaches poll, and will look to get some much-needed pre-conference reps when they play Inola Monday night at 8:30 p.m. in the first round of the Jerry O’Quin Invitational. They will then travel to Bartlesville Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. to kick off Frontier Valley Conference action.

In junior varsity action the Sandites got a 4-0 shutout in overtime to win 57-53, with all four points coming at the hands of Costen Brockman. Brockman had a team-high 15 points, followed by Kade Holland with 14 and John Keim with 13.
