CBMS Basketball: 8th Grade White finishes 2nd at Frontier Valley Conference Tournament

The Sand Springs 8th Grade White boys’ basketball team came in runner-up at the Frontier Valley Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon in Sapulpa, falling 57-38 to Union.

The Sandites rallied from a 17 point deficit to enter the fourth quarter down only 36-34, but the Redskins surged ahead with 18-straight points to secure the win.

The Redskins started on an 8-0 run and came away with seven steals in the first quarter to take a 23-7 lead by the end of the period.

Sand Springs trailed by 17 through most of the second quarter, but ended on a 7-2 run to enter halftime 34-22. The third quarter was the Sand Springs show as Colin Shope opened the half with three-straight goals before Jesse Tandoy scored the Redskins’ only basket. Mason Ward scored his first bucket and Alijah Roper hit back-to-back layups to trim it to a one-score game.

This time it was Union’s turn to adjust, as they rattled off 18-straight before Jesie Manuel broke up the run. Jackson Stewart scored the final bucket of the game.

Shope led the Sandites in scoring with 11 points, and Kenneth Page had 8 rebounds with 7 points. Tandoy led all scorers with 14 points.

CPHS Basketball: Boys knock off No. 3 Jenks 45-36 on the road, Richardson scores 13

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (16-4, 8-4) pulled off a stellar 45-36 upset of No. 3 Jenks (17-3, 9-3) Friday night at Frank Herald Field House with double-digit efforts from three different Sandites. The Trojans previously beat Sand Springs 57-54 on the Sandites’ home court, and the Sandites got payback on Jenks’s Senior Night through superior shooting and aggressive defense, despite being short two starters.

University of Central Oklahoma-commit Davon Richardson led all scorers for the fifth time this season with 13 points and added 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the year. Josh Minney put up 12 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and Marlo Fox added 10 points. Chase Martin was the lone Trojan in double-digits with 11 points to pace his team. Both teams had only five players in the book.

Richardson scored the opening three-pointer and the Sandites connected on four of six three-point attempts in the first quarter for a 16-7 lead before Benjamin Averitt got hot. The Trojan made a two, then went three-for-three at the free throw line with a second left to make it 16-12. Trendon Tisdale trimmed the deficit to 20-18 in the second quarter, but Richardson and Minney closed out with back to back buckets.

The Sandites held Jenks to only three points in the third quarter and Ethan Oakley gave them a double digit lead in the final seconds of the period. Oakley added another bucket to start the fourth and Minney added another for their biggest lead at 35-21. Jenks went on an 8-2 run to cut it to 37-29 and both teams entered the final four minutes in the bonus, but neither made any headway and the Sandites held on for the win.

Sand Springs basketball will face another tough task Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. when they travel to No. 1 Booker T. Washington (14-5, 10-1). Sand Springs is the only 6A team to beat the star-studded Hornets this season, 66-62 at home. Jenks will host Sapulpa (9-11, 4-7) Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. They previously beat the Chieftains 69-53.

CPHS Basketball: Girls beat Jenks 62-51 for 3-0 season sweep, Armstead scores 18

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (14-6, 7-5) completed a 3-0 season sweep of No. 19 Jenks (10-10, 5-7) Friday night at Frank Herald Field House, beating the Lady Trojans 62-51 behind an 18-point effort from Journey Armstead and 16 points from Raegan Padilla, spoiling Trojan Senior Night in a comeback effort.

Four Jenks girls hit three-pointers in the first quarter and the Trojans led 17-15 by the end of it. The Sandites played from the hole till a two from Madison Burris tied it at 11-11, and Bayleigh Cheney gave them their first lead on the next goal. A three from Madison Luciano capped a six point run at 17-13, but Armstead had the final say of the quarter.

A 9-2 run from the Trojans gave them their biggest lead at 26-18, but Hailey Jackson scored two in a row and Leyshia Morris added a three to cut it to a one-point game before Haley Meely scored the final bucket of the half.

Armstead missed the final minutes of the second quarter after taking a hard fall but reentered the game in the third. Then Jackson went down at the 4:20 mark of the third and didn’t rejoin the game till 4:47 in the fourth.

Three-straight layups from Armstead, Burris, and Padilla tied it at 37-37 with 1:14 in the quarter. A three from Meely briefly reclaimed the Jenks lead, but Padilla hit back to back threes, including a buzzer beater, to take a 43-40 advantage into the home stretch.

Makenna Burch and Luciano tied it up on two occasions in the fourth, but the Sandites soon began to pull away. Back-to-back steals from Jackson and Padilla led to their biggest lead at 61-50, then Burch and Padilla traded free throws to end the game.

Meely led all scorers with 20 points, but Burch was the only other Trojan in double digits with 10. Sand Springs had three double-digit scorers, with Jackson scoring 10. Both teams had eight players in the book.

Sand Springs basketball will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference road game against No. 3 Booker T. Washington (18-2, 10-1) as they attempt to repay a 65-39 January loss. Jenks will host No. 7 Sapulpa (17-3, 10-1) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Chieftains won their last meeting 69-47.

CPHS Basketball: Boys to host home Regional, Girls head to Union

The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association released its Regional post-season pairings Thursday afternoon, and the Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team will get to host a home Regional Championship, while the girls’ team will travel to Union High School.

Unlike some sports, every basketball team gets a shot at the post-season. There are eight Regional Tournaments in Class 6A with four teams apiece. The first round is single-elimination, but both the Regional Champions and the Runners-Up will advance to the Area playoff. The Regional Runners-Up will then have to win their next two games to advance to the eight-team State Tournament, while the Regional Champions will only have to win one of their next two.

The Sandite boys will host No. 11 Broken Arrow (14-6), Bixby (6-12), and Enid (8-13). The Sandites will play Enid Friday, February 28th at 8:00 p.m. Broken Arrow will play Bixby at 6:30 p.m. The winners of the first round games will play again Saturday the 29th at 7:00 p.m.

Sand Springs boasts the No. 11 offense in 6A and the No. 8 defense, and wins by an average score of 63-53. Enid is 22nd in offense, 21st in defense, and loses by an average score of 59-57. Bixby is No. 17 in offense and dead last in defense, losing by an average score of 67-61. The Sandites have beaten Bixby twice this season by an average of 20 points.

Broken Arrow started the season 13-1 and beat the Sandites 63-51 on their home court, but since then they are 1-5. The two will meet on the 21st in the final regular season game for both teams, and this time it will be fought at the Ed Dubie Field House in what will likely be a preview of the Regional finals. The Tigers are 20th in offense and 7th in defense, winning by an average score of 60-53.

The Sand Springs girls will play against Broken Arrow (8-11) in the first round, Thursday the 27th at 6:30 p.m. On the other side of the bracket is No. 6 Union (16-4) vs. Muskogee (6-14) at 8:00 p.m. The finals will be played Saturday the 29th at 1:30 p.m.

Sand Springs is No. 10 in offense and No. 17 in defense, winning by an average score of 56-48. Broken Arrow is No. 9 in offense and No. 31 in defense, losing by an average score of 58-56. The Sandites already beat the Tigers 80-78 on the road in January, and will host them in the regular season finale on the 21st, setting up back-to-back battles between the two.

Union is 21st in offense and 3rd in defense, winning by an average score of 49-39. They beat the Sandites twice this season, 39-25 and 32-30. Muskogee is 24th in offense and 29th in defense, losing by an average score of 56-46. The Sandites beat Muskogee 86-64 last month.

All three girls’ games will be played at the Union Multipurpose Athletic Center at 6836 South Mingo Road in Tulsa.

The Area playoff sites will be determined after the Regionals have concluded, and will be at neutral venues. Girls games will be played Thursday, March 5th and Saturday, March 7th. Boys Area will be Friday, March 6th, and Saturday, March 7th. The State Tournament will be played Thursday, March 12th through Saturday, March 14th.

The Sand Springs boys own four Regional titles, most recently in 2019. The girls own seven Regional titles, including three in a row from 2017 to 2019.

CPHS Basketball: Davon Richardson scores 1,000th career point with Sand Springs

Charles Page High School senior and University of Central Oklahoma commit Davon Richardson recently scored his 1,000th career point with the Sandites, a mark made even more impressive by the fact that he hasn’t even played three full seasons in Sand Springs.

Richardson scored at least 191 points as a freshman at Tulsa Central (we’re missing data on a few games) before moving to Sand Springs. He scored 357 points his sophomore year and 361 as a junior. His 20-point effort against Union on Friday pushed him to the 1,000 career mark (with Sand Springs), and his 19-point game against Owasso on Tuesday put him over 300 for the season. Including his time at Tulsa, he has scored over 1,200 in his career.

The 6’4” stud has also been a beast on the boards throughout his career, averaging 6.8 as a sophomore, 8.4 as a junior and 8.2 as a senior. He owns 16 career double-doubles with six this season.

Richardson is shooting 46.2% on field goals this season, 21.7% on threes, 55.3% on twos, and 69.8% on free throws. He averages 2.4 offensive rebounds, 5.8 defensive rebounds, 1.9 assist, 2.0 steals, 0.8 blocks, 2.7 fouls, and 15.8 points.

He has led the team in scoring four times this season and 25 times in his career. He scored a season-high 28 points last month against Bartlesville, and a career-high 44 points against Owasso as a sophomore.

Richardson is the sixth Sandite to join the 1,000 point club and the second since the arrival of Head Coach Eric Savage. Glen Buntin leads all Sandites with 1,720 points, followed by current UCO sophomore Colt Savage with 1,697. NAIA National Champion Nick Tate scored 1,282 for the Sandites, Justin Clemons scored 1,194, and Oklahoma State’s Ward Sherrill scored 1,009.

Brooks Haddock scored 1,427 career points, but spent his latter two seasons at Muskogee after scoring 687 at Sand Springs in his first two years. Junior Marlo Fox has a good shot at joining the club, sitting at 606 points currently. He is averaging 17.4 points per game this year and will likely take an even bigger role next year when the Sandites lose Richardson and Josh Minney.

Sand Springs is currently ranked ninth in Class 6A with three games left in the regular season. They are 15-4 overall, their best mark of the Savage era. The season has had a lot of highs and lows. They beat No. 6 Union and No. 2 Booker T. Washington during an 11-1 start to the year, but they’re currently having to adapt to the losses of Jaeden Hurd and Daren Hawkins who both suffered season-ending ACL injuries.

Sandite basketball will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. with a huge Frontier Valley Conference road games at No.3 Jenks (17-2, 9-2), followed by No. 1 Booker T. Washington (14-5, 10-1) next Tuesday. The Sandites are currently 7-4 for fourth place in the league. Their next and final home game will be next Friday against No. 11 Broken Arrow (14-6, 6-5) when they look to repay a 63-51 January loss. Regional/Area playoff assignments are set to be released Thursday afternoon.
