CPHS Basketball: Shorthanded Sandites beat Sapulpa 57-48, Minney scores 18

Ethan Oakley made his first career start Tuesday and recorded 6 points with 7 rebounds.

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (14-3, 6-3) came into Tuesday night’s conference road game minus two starters, but that didn’t stop them from rolling to a 57-48 win against Highway 97 rival Sapulpa (8-10, 3-6), snapping a four-game win streak for the Chieftains.

Jaeden Hurd had ACL surgery last week and is out for the season. Daren Hawkins went down on Friday and is expected to have season-ending surgery sometime this week. The two juniors split starting duty and average a combined 14 points and 8 rebounds. 6’3” sophomore Ethan Oakley stepped up Tuesday and contributed well with 6 points and 7 rebounds in his first career start.

The triple-headed scoring threat of Davon Richardson, Marlo Fox, and Josh Minney all posted double digits, led by Minney with 18 for his third team-high of the year. Richardson had his fifth double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Fox added 12 points and 6 boards.

Te’Zohn Taft scored the first bucket of the game from three-point range, then Fox hit back-to-back twos for the lead. Zac Altom and Hunter Hoggatt added two more goals and the Chieftains led for the remainder of the quarter.

Sand Springs came storming back with eight-straight points to start the second, but Taft tied it back up at 18-18. Sapulpa finished the half strong with a traditional three from Brandon Niyah for a 23-22 locker room advantage.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than a goal, and Oakley took the final lead of the game with a free throw at 38-37. Oakley added another bucket to start the fourth quarter, kicking off a 10-2 run that Sapulpa never recovered from.

The Chieftains had two players in double-digits; Taft with 14 points and Niyah with 10.

Sand Springs will return to action with a huge conference road game against No. 7 Union (12-5, 5-3) Friday at 8:00 p.m. They previously beat the Redskins 75-74 at home in December. The Chieftains will travel to Bixby (6-9, 2-6) Friday at 7:00 p.m. They edged out the Spartans 75-73 at home in December.

CPHS Basketball: Girls fall 63-46 to Sapulpa, Armstead scores 18

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (12-5, 5-4) suffered a Frontier Valley Conference loss Tuesday Night at the Chieftain, falling 63-46 to Highway 97 rival No. 7 Sapulpa (15-3, 8-1).

The Chieftain starting five had 11 inches on the Sandites, and out-rebounded them 34 to 22. They also out-shot their visitors and won the turnover battle.

The Sandites got help from a foul-happy first half, scoring nine points on twelve fouls, but still trailed 34-22 going into the locker room after a 12-point performance from Temira Poindexter and 11 from Ray Osborn.

Osborn picked up her third and fourth fouls less than a minute into the second half and missed most of the third quarter. Her absence contributed to the Sandites’ best stanza, a 13-13 tie. Journey Armstead put up nine points in the quarter and got her team back within single digits at 44-35, but Stailee Heard made a buzzer-beating three for the Chieftains.

Sapulpa got hot again in the fourth and took their biggest lead at 63-44 before Raegan Padilla made her way into the score book with the final points of the game.

Poindexter led all scorers with 21 points, but the Chieftains had three in double digits. Osborn scored 15 despite missing most of the second half, and Alexis Lewis added 13. Armstead paced the Sandites with 18, followed by Hailey Jackson with 10.

Sand Springs will return to action with a huge conference road game against No. 6 Union (14-3, 7-1) Friday at 6:30 p.m. They lost their previous meeting with the Redskins 39-25 at home. The Chieftains will travel to No. 10 Bixby (11-6, 5-3) Friday at 6:30 p.m. They edged out the Spartans 52-49 in overtime in December.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites throttle Bixby 64-49, Minney scores 19

The Class 6A No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (13-3, 5-3) snapped back from Tuesday’s upset loss with a dominant 64-49 Frontier Valley Conference win against Bixby (6-9, 2-6) Friday night at the Whitey Ford Sports Complex.

The game was a shootout between the two #23s, and Bixby’s Xavier Glenn won that battle with 23 points, but the Sandites had no shortage of stars with Josh Minney leading the way. The 6’4” senior put up 19 to lead the Sandites for the second time this season, and also had 9 rebounds. He was closely followed by Davon Richardson with 18 points and 8 rebounds, and Marlo Fox with 15 points.

The Sandites started the game on fire with a traditional three from Richardson, a steal from Minney that led to free throws, a dunk from Minney, an easy bucket from Cason Savage, then a three from Minney for the 12-0 lead. Glenn got the home team on the board with a pair of threes, but the visitors led 18-8 at the buzzer.

Minney stayed hot in the second period with five more points, including a dunk, and was aided by Daren Hawkins and Fox with four apiece for a 33-17 halftime advantage.

Fox kicked off the second half with a three, then Minney added a third dunk. They extended their lead to as much as 45-23 before the Spartans began a comeback attempt with eight-straight points including a dunk from Glenn. The visitors had the final say of the period with baskets from Minney and Fox to make it 49-31.

Bixby whittled their deficit down to 12 in the fourth but Sand Springs never failed to find an answer and scored eight in a row to make it 64-44 before Glenn broke up the run.

The Sandites will return to action with a Highway 97 Rivalry game at Sapulpa (8-9, 3-5) Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. Bixby will travel to No. 20 Owasso (7-10, 3-5) Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
