CPHS Football Halftime Report: Sandites trail Bartlesville 34-14 at the half

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (2-3, 1-1) got off to a hot start against No. 13 Bartlesville (0-5, 0-2) Friday night at Custer Stadium, but were quickly outpaced in the second quarter. After leading 14-7 seven minutes into the game, they found themselves down 34-14 by halftime.

Ty Pennington connected with Campbell on a 73-yard touchdown on the very first play from scrimmage. Zach Heinen kicked the PAT, and the home team found themselves down 7-0 only 22 seconds into the game.

The Bruins quickly responded with an 8-play 64-yard march, capped by a five-yard touchdown run from Laken Clowdus. Dylan McCoy kicked the PAT to tie things up with 8:14 in the quarter.

Bartlesville forced a quick three-and-out and marched down to the Sandite 17, but Daren Hawkins picked off Ben Winters’s pass for an 83-yard touchdown, ending a 33-game scoreless dry spell for the Sandite defense.

Winters made up for the error with a 53-yard strike to Caden Davis, but McCoy missed the extra point and the Sandites held their lead, 14-13.

The second quarter was all Bartlesville as they forced another three-and-out and took advantage of a major Sandite Special Teams mistake. A high punt traveled past Heinen, who recovered it at his own 18  yard line, setting up the Bruins for a five-play drive and one-yard run from Seth Long for the 20-14 lead.

Sand Springs made it to the Bartlesville 30 but turned the ball over on downs, and the Bruins responded with a five-play 70-yard march and 44-yard touchdown pass from Winters to Davis. The defense came up strong again as Taton Hopkins made the first ever interception against Pennington and returned it 40 yards. Six plays later, on a fourth-and-seven, Winters found Long from 26 yards out and McCoy gave his team the 34-14 lead shortly before the half.

Pennington ended the first half 5-18-141-1 while Winters was 6-13-130-1. The Sandites accounted for 51 yards on 15 carries for 192 yards of total offense. Clowdus was 15-111 rushing to anchor a 19-123 ground game for the Bruins and 253 offensive yards.
