Sandite of the Week: Cole Durkee scores career-high 17 points against Jenks

Charles Page High School senior Cole Durkee was selected as our Sandite of the Week for his performance over the past three games.

The Sandite scored double digits in two out of three games, both against ranked opponents. He scored ten points with five rebounds against No. 11 Union, eight points against No. 16 Owasso, and a career-high seventeen points with seven rebounds against No. 8 Jenks last Tuesday.

Durkee is fifth on his team in scoring and third in rebounding, averaging 9.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He shoots 47.3% on field goals, 57.1% inside the arc, and 65.5% at the free throw line.

Since opening in 2008, the BOK Center has been the home of the Tulsa Oilers professional hockey team, the Tulsa Shock WNBA team, and the Tulsa Talons arena football team. It has also hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and the Big 12 Wrestling Tournament.

On Saturday, February 2nd, the 17,839 seat arena will host the Fourth Annual High School Hoops Showcase, giving local student athletes the opportunity to play on what could be the biggest stage of their careers. Sixteen teams will play eight games - four boys games and four girls games. The premier match-up will feature two of the top teams in the state as the Booker T. Washington and Charles Page High School boys go head-to-head at 7:30 p.m.

The game will hold huge implications in the loaded Frontier Valley Conference as both teams are still heavy competitors for the title. The FVC is the toughest conference in Class 6A, and the top four teams are sitting at seven wins apiece, all with circular losses.

Both teams have one more game apiece this week before they meet on Saturday. Sand Springs will host Broken Arrow (7-10), who they previously defeated 54-45 earlier this season. Washington will try to avenge an early-season 80-72 loss to No. 4 Sapulpa (14-2) on Friday. If both teams win their Friday night games, then the Saturday winner will take the front spot in the conference.

Tickets for the Saturday showcase are $5 for students, $10 for general admission, and $25 for reserved courtside seats.

The Hornets were riding a twelve-game winning streak before falling to No. 2 Edmond Santa Fe (16-2) in the Jenks/Union Tournament finals Saturday. They boast the No. 2 offense in Class 6A but are 24th defensively, winning by an average score of 77-61.

The Sandites recently suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season but bounced back with a win over No. 8 Jenks (12-5) last Tuesday. Sand Springs has the No. 9 offense and No. 10 defense in 6A, winning by an average score of 66-54.

Broken Arrow is 21st offensively and nineteenth defensively, losing their games by an average score of 58-57. They had a rough 1-6 start to the season, but are 6-4 since then and coming off a win over Bixby.

The Sand Springs girls (14-4) will also play Friday, kicking off the night at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Sandites are seventh offensively and twentieth defensively, winning by an average score of 62-48. They lost back-to-back games last weekend for the first time in over a year, but rebounded with a win over Booker T. Washington on Tuesday.

The Broken Arrow girls (8-10) are eighth offensively and thirtieth defensively, losing their games by an average score of 61-59. Like their boys’ team, they started the season rough, going 2-6. Since then they are 6-4 and coming off a loss to Bixby.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites undefeated in conference, beat No. 14 Booker T. Washington 65-60

It took a team effort, and it came down to the wire, but the Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (14-4) overcame No. 14 Booker T. Washington (11-6, 5-3) Tuesday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House to remain undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference action at 10-0.

The visiting Hornets jumped out to a 17-9 first period lead, but the Lady Sandites surged back for a 65-60 victory. University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter had her fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and thirteen rebounds. Destiny Johnson scored seventeen, Madison Burris had eleven, and Isabella Regalado added ten for the Sandites.

Wvette Mayberry gave the Hornets an early lead, laying up on a steal, then drilling a pair of threes before Burris got the Sandites on the board. Carrigan Hill and Armani Reed buried the home team with a double-digit deficit and Head Coach Tobey Nightingale benched the starters. Eleven Sandites saw action in the first period, but only one found her rhythm. Johnson got hot late in the quarter for two field goals and a pair of free throws, but the Hornets took a 17-9 lead into the second period.

Burris kicked off a thirteen-point run early in the second. She and Regalado hit back-to-back threes, then she and Johnson hit back to back layups to make it a one-point game. Kersgieter hit a free throw to tie it, missed the second, then gave the Sandites their first lead of the game thanks to a rebound from Burris. Amnisty Smith hit back to back baskets for the Hornets, but Burris put herself in double digits to close the half 25-24.

The third period was back-and-forth with five lead changes. Sand Springs went on a six point run and Darrian Jordan gave them their biggest lead of the game at 36-30. Mayberry went on a five-point run in retaliation, but Johnson took a steal coast-to-coast for a 38-35 advantage.

The fourth period was the most explosive stanza of the season with a combined 52 points. It was the third-highest scoring offensive performance of the season for Sand Springs, and the second-most points they’ve allowed. Despite that, they never once relinquished their lead, and had an answer for every Hornet sting. Kersgieter scored fifteen points in that period alone.

Mayberry led the Hornets with nineteen points and Reed had thirteen to put two visitors in double digits.

Six teams are still in contention for the conference title, but the Sandites have a large margin for error with a three-win lead on their closest competitors. With four games left on the conference schedule, they only have to win three more to clinch the title. Booker T. will need to win their remaining six games to have a chance at the title.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Broken Arrow (8-10, 2-7). The Hornets will play Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against No. 6 Bartlesville (13-3, 5-2) in the High School Hoops Showcase at the BOK Center.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites win Will Rogers Tournament with three champions

Braden Dahl and two other Sandites brought home gold from the Will Rogers Tournament.

The Sand Springs Junior Varsity Wrestling Team took first place this past weekend at the Morey Villareal Memorial Tournament. The Sandites sent seven to the finals and crowned three champions at Will Rogers High School.

The tournament featured nineteen teams, including eleven varsity programs, and the Sand Springs junior varsity bested all of them. The loaded Sandite roster even had enough talent to send a second JV team, which placed twelfth.

Dylan Luker won the 113-pound bracket and pinned all three of his opponents, including teammate KJ Clark who took second. Caleb Phillips placed first at 138 pounds with three falls, and Braden Dahl won at 160 with two falls.

Colton Luker came in Runner-Up at 106 pounds, picking up two first-period falls before going down in the finals. Nick Huelsenbeck placed second at 126 with one fall, and Joseph Mattison placed second at 132 with two pins.

Santana Naugle placed third at 182 and Thomas Naugle placed fourth with two pins. Sango Whitehorn placed fourth at 195, and Justin Smith placed sixth at 220 with one pin apiece. Ryder Barnes placed fifth at 120 with two falls, and had the fastest Sandite pin of the weekend in only thirteen seconds.

Javon Querns was the only Sandite to record a technical fall, and placed sixth at 106.

Sand Springs placed thirteenth out of 29 teams at the Edmond Junior High Tournament with 91.5 points. Bixby won the event with 256, followed by Choctaw with 209.5 and Tuttle with 173.5.

Mitchell Smith went 5-2 for fifth place at 89 pounds, losing only a pair of close decisions. He scored a 9-2 decision in the first round, then racked up four first-period falls in 0:58, 0:55, 0:30, and 0:18. In the placement round he pinned Yukon’s Krystian Moore.

Brooks Dudley placed fifth at 200 with a 4-2 record. He won an 11-3 major decision and pinned three foes in 4:19, 0:37, and 0:23. His only losses were 3-1 in an overtime tie-breaker, and 7-6 in the consolation semifinals.

Abraham Hernandez went 3-3 at 120 for sixth place. All three of his wins came by fall, in 3:32, 2:30, and 0:22. In the consolation semifinals he lost only 2-1 to Lawton MacArthur’s Calven Moore.

Cameron White failed to place at 106 but went 2-2 with a pair of falls. Ethan Norton failed to place at 113 but amassed a winning record of 4-2 . He lost his opening match to Raider Mackey but pinned two foes, scored a 15-0 technical fall, and a 6-4 decision. Zane Sheppard picked up a first-period fall at 132 before being eliminated.

Chase White went 3-2 at 140 with a fall, a major decision, and a medical forfeit. Cody Cramer went 3-2 at 150 with three decisions. Mason Harris won a 1-0 decision at heavyweight.
