CPHS Basketball: Sandites improve to 2-0 with 57-52 win over Muskogee

The No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team won their second game of the season and first conference game in a 57-52 barn burner against the Muskogee Roughers (0-1, 0-1) Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House.

The Sandites struggled from three-point range, making only two baskets on eighteen attempts, but were a solid 21-of-31 inside the arc and nine of fourteen at the charity stripe. Their visitors were the complete opposite, shooting only 35% on field goals, but an impressive 12-of-28 on three pointers to keep the Sandites on their toes.

Junior standout Davon Richardson led the Sandites for the second straight game with sixteen points, closely followed by Marlo Fox, who scored thirteen for the second game in a row. They were the only two Sandites to score in double digits, though Josh Minney scored a career-high eight points with ten rebounds.

The game was a low scoring affair and the Sandites owned only a 10-9 first quarter advantage. They closed out the first half on a strong note with eight-straight points.

The Sandites’ biggest lead was ten points, achieved three times at 27-17, 33-23, and 43-33. The Roughers began to battle back late in the fourth quarter, cutting it to 55-52 with 18.8 seconds to go, but Richardson hit a pair of free throws to secure the victory.

Sand Springs Basketball will return to action Tuesday with a conference road game against No. 11 Broken Arrow (0-0).

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites throttle Muskogee 109-39 in conference opener

The Dubie was lit Friday night in Sand Springs. After an upset loss in Tuesday’s season opener, the No. 1 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (1-1,  1-0) made a statement in their first conference game with a seventy-point win against Frontier Valley foe the Muskogee Roughers (0-1) in their first home game at the Ed Dubie Field House.

The Lady Sandites played an aggressive full court press that came up with four-straight turnovers and a 10-0 lead before Muskogee ever left their side of the court.

All fifteen varsity players saw game time, twelve made their way into the score book and five scored in double digits in what could be a school record offensive output. Sandite Pride’s records are incomplete, but even the historically exceptional teams from the Dustin Morrow era only broke 80 points once. The triple digit beat down couldn’t have made for a more perfect first win for first-year head coach Tobey Nightingale.

University of Tulsa commit Destiny Johnson led all scorers with 21 points, closely followed by University of Kansas commit Holly Kersgieter with eighteen, sophomore standout Darrian Jordan with sixteen, and Northeastern State University commit Isabella Regalado with fifteen. Johnson had her first double-double of the season with ten steals.

D’Asia Brown scored the Roughers’ first points on a steal, but the home team rattled off nineteen straight with three three-pointers from Madison Burris before Davin Wilson broke the run. By the end of the first period the Sandites owned a 36-8 lead.

The second period was less explosive, but only slightly. The home team won it 21-8 for a 41-point halftime lead. A two pointer from Lonnesha Hill was the only thing breaking up a thirteen-point run from Sand Springs. The Roughers even got help from the refs when they were given two free throws on a made two-point basket.

The third period was Muskogee’s best with thirteen points and they scored nine of those in a row after a seven-point start from Regalado. Sand Springs scored 26 points in both the third and fourth quarters. Sophomore Bayleigh Cheney hit two free throws to end the game with the biggest lead of the night.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Tuesday with a conference road game against Broken Arrow (0-0) before looking for their third-straight Bishop Kelley Invitational title that weekend.

CPHS Basketball: Kersgieter scores 29 in 74-62 loss at Ponca City

The Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team entered the season ranked first in Class 6A under first-year Head Coach Tobey Nightingale, thanks to a strong core unit of four returning starters, all signed to play collegiate sports. The Lady Sandites have won and lost the No. 1 ranking two seasons straight, but this year they got the target off their back early after a 74-62 season-opening loss to No. 18 Ponca City.

The loss couldn’t have come at a more opportune time as the Sandites can now identify their weaknesses and prepare for the conference games that are far more important in the scope of the season.

Free throws were the defining aspect of the game, as the two teams combined for 51 penalties. While the Wildcats were a deadly 33-of-37 at the charity stripe, the Sandites ended with 24 free throws on 35 attempts.

The two teams were evenly matched in the field. Sand Springs was better from outside the arc, while Ponca was better in the paint. The Sandites had the edge in offensive rebounds, but the Wildcats more than doubled their visitors in blocks and had the edge on steals as well.

University of Kansas-signed senior Holly Kersgieter led the Sandites with 29 points and ten rebounds, while sophomore standout Baylee Fincher led all scorers with 32 points. Reagan Padilla scored thirteen for Sand Springs, while Ponca had three players in double digits with eighteen from Ryley Beard and sixteen from Madison Birnbaum.

Kersgieter scored the first five points on a free throw and two layups. Ponca retaliated with a six point run, thanks to a six foul run from the Sandites, but Padilla hit the first three-pointer of the season to reclaim the lead. Destiny Johnson made her way into the scorebook for a 10-6 lead, the Wildcats tied it, then freshman Mikah Hampton made a pair of free throws followed by a Padilla layup.

Fincher tipped the tide in the Wildcats’ favor with a five point run to close the first period up 15-14. She hit a buzzer beater to end the stanza and started the second quarter with another deep three. The Lady Sandites held close throughout the remainder of the half and cut the deficit to 25-24 with a pair of free throws from Isabella Regalado, but Fincher continued her onslaught with five points on two field goals. The game tied once more at 30-30 but Beard finished the half with a deep ball.

The Wildcats forced their lead into double digits with a seven-point run to start the second half, but Kersgieter was a machine with twelve points in the quarter to cut it back to 49-44. She went on a seven point run in the fourth quarter to make it 54-53, but the Wildcats surged ahead with fourteen free throws for the double-digit win.

The Lady Sandites will look for redemption Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in their home debut against Frontier Valley Conference foe Muskogee High School.

CPHS Basketball: Richardson scores 25 in 68-46 victory at Ponca

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School basketball team handily won their season-opener Tuesday night at Allen Robson Field House, rolling past the Ponca City Wildcats 68-46.

The Sandites had three scorers in double digits, led by 6’4” junior standout Davon Richardson with 25 points and thirteen rebounds. Senior Cole Durkee and sophomore Marlo Fox each posted thirteen points apiece, while Durkee had ten rebounds. Nine players got to see court time, while seven made their way into the scorebook.

The visitors wasted no time in jumping out to a 6-0 lead with baskets from Richardson, Durkee, and Josh Minney before Ponca’s Justin Thompson hit a three. Durkee made a long goal of his own, then Chase Matson and Fox exchanged layups. Anthony Gazaway was next in on the action with five points on two field goals to cut it to a one-point game. Sophomore Jaeden Hurd went three-of-four from the charity stripe, followed by two freebies from Sheldon Tawkoyty, and the Sandites took a 14-12 lead into the second period.

Steven Faulkner tied it at 17-17, Minney hit two free balls, then Tawkoyty tied it again. Fox regained the lead, Tawkoyty tied it at 21-21, then Luke Seals gave the Wildcats their first lead of the night. Minney tied it and Fox reclaimed it, then Thompson took it right back on a deep ball. Richardson got the Sandites back out front with a five point run to close the half and that was the last time the Wildcats would lead.

Cale Savage scored his lone basket of the evening for a 35-27 third-quarter lead, Tawkoyty hit a three, then Richardson scored five for the Sandites’ first double-digit advantage. Richardson scored fifteen of the Sandites’ eighteen points in that period.

The fourth quarter was the highest-scoring for the victors, kicked off by a five-point run from Fox. Ponca retaliated with six of their own, then Durkee, Fox, and Richardson combined for the longest streak of the night at ten points and a 24-point lead.

The Sandites were strong on free throws, going fourteen-of-eighteen from the charity stripe. They also more than doubled the Wildcats on offensive rebounds and blocks.

Sand Springs will make its home debut Friday night against the Muskogee Roughers.

Youth Wrestling: Seven Sandites snag titles at Coweta Tournament

Seven Sandites brought home first-place medals from the Coweta Oklahoma USA Wrestling Tournament this past weekend.

Division 5

Hayden Ostrowski placed second at 155 pounds, falling to Mason Wood, but majoring Colton Ingram 12-3.

Division 4

Robert Burke won the 92-pound bracket easily with a 16-1 technical fall against Mia Adams and pins of Wiley Welch and Skyler Wood in 0:19 and 1:08, respectively. Carter Wood came in runner-up, pinning Welch in 2:31 and Adams in 3:45, and majoring Skyler Wood 11-2. Skyler Wood placed third, pinning Welch in 1:28 and Adams in 2:16.

Jace Simms won the 76-pound division with a pin of Gavin Pettit in 2:51.

Matthew Moore came in runner-up at 73 pounds, defeating teammate Colt Cothran 8-3, but falling 4-2 to Hunter Knox. Ayreson Reiss placed third with a 1:36 pin of Sage Thorn, a 46-second pin of Christopher Hodges, and a 7-5 decision over Cothran. Cothran placed fourth, majoring Thorn 15-4 and defeating Hodges 11-6.

Division 3

Kasen McAffrey won the 76-pound bracket with three first-period falls. He pinned Jack Kinkaid in 0:34, Brice Lozinsky in 1:54, and Logan Gray in 0:51.

Carter Wood won the 90-pound bracket by pinning Malakai Agnew in 1:48 and Austin Freisberg in 2:52, and defeated Riley Hicks 6-4.

Skyler Wood came in runner-up at 80 pounds. He fell 6-0 to Blake Parmley in the opening round but pinned Ethan Oglesbee in 4:07 and Jaxon Rice in 1:02 and topped John Max Carter Harland 5-3 in sudden-victory overtime.

Division 2

Samuel Moore placed second at 61 pounds, pinning Bradley Vargas in 1:08 and majoring Bryson Hodges 13-0. He was defeated 16-0 by Maddox Moore in the finals.

Beginner 4

Aiden Wilkerson came in runner-up at 120 pounds. He pinned Redus Bowman in 0:58, Halle Sampson in 0:37, and Kylar Rogers in 0:52, but fell to Dillon Blundell.

Beginner 2

Aiden Rhine won the 90-pound bracket, pinning Crew Kaser in 0:36 and Ty Holly in 0:45.

Aaerick Collins placed third at 67 pounds, pinning Jaxson Paschall in 0:29, Isaac Oelke in 1:28, and Owen Hughes in 2:49. He fell 17-2 to Ponca City’s Westin Day.

Beginner 1

Wes Wilson won the 43-pound bracket with three falls, taking down Liam Keene in 1:00, James Simmons in 2:32, and Kellan Hayes in 2:28.

Ryder Black won the 49-pound bracket, defeating Reid Alexander 8-5, Kaseton Dean 18-2, and pinning Max Bozone in 1:19.

Girls 9&Under

Isabella Perea came in runner-up at 60 pounds, pinning Abby Chambers in 0:26, but fell to McAlester’s Jaylianna James.
