CPHS Football Halftime Report: Sandites lead Sapulpa 27-14, presented by YellowHouse Market & Boutique

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School football team (2-6, 1-4) took a 27-14 first half lead in their rivalry game against the No. 7 Sapulpa Chieftains (6-2, 3-2) Friday on Senior Night at Memorial Stadium.

The Sandites jumped out to a 20-0 lead with a 13-0 first quarter shutout before letting the  Chieftains back into the game with a 14-14 second quarter tie.

The visitors tried to get fancy on their opening drive with a punt fake, but the Sandite defense broke up the pass play for a turnover on downs and a scoring drive. Senior quarterback Caden Pennington hit Luke Bratcher for a 27-yard pass, then ran for eighteen yards on the next play before punching it in from one-yard out. Jaden Weiser kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

The stellar Sandite defense forced a quick three-and-out and the offense put together a thirteen-play 59-yard drive capped by a three-yard Pennington run. This time the point-after fell apart due to a bad snap.

Cameron Smith recovered a fumbled kick on the next play, but the Chieftains made their first defensive stop with a pass break-up at the end zone and forced a punt.

Sapulpa punted it away soon after and Pennington stole the show again, setting up a first-and-goal after a career-long 61-yard run, then scored from two yards out soon after. Weiser capped the 20-0 run with 6:25 in the half.

Then Sapulpa came alive.

Marcus Esparza scored on an eighteen-yard run after a six-play 62-yard drive to get the visitors on the board. The Sandites retaliated with a five-play 72-yard drive, featuring a spectacular 53-yard pass to Daren Hawkins, and three-yard touchdown run from Pennington.

Chieftain quarterback Elijah Williams was next in the endzone on a 26-yard run for the final points of the half.

CPHS Cross Country: Jacob Smith qualifies for State Championship

The Charles Page High School Cross Country team saw their season come to an end Saturday at the Mohawk Sports Complex. Neither the boys nor girls placed high enough to advance to State as teams, but Jacob Smith qualified as an individual.

Broken Arrow freshman Payton Hinkle won the Girls 6A-East Regional Title in 18:48.9 and Edmond North senior Parker Jackson won the boys’ race in 16:24.1. Owasso won the team titles for both boys and girls.

The Lady Sandites placed thirteenth of fifteen schools, led by Erika Baker in 22:50 for fiftieth place. The boys were a solid ninth of sixteen teams, led by Smith in 17:59.4 for 29th place.

The top seven teams from each Regional will advance to State, as well as the top fourteen individual placers from a non-qualifying school. Smith was the No. 10 qualifier, while Nelson Yazzie missed the No. 14 spot by less than a second.

The 6A Boys State Championship will be held Saturday, October 27th at 12:45 p.m., followed by the Awards Assembly at 1:30 p.m. The race will be at Edmond Santa Fe High School at 1901 West 15th Street in Edmond. The top fifteen runners will receive medals.

The Sandites traveled to Bartlesville recently for a muddy 5K at the Frontier Valley Conference Championship.

Hinkle won the Varsity Girls race in 18:58 while senior teammate Blake McConkay won the boys’ run in 16:40. A youthful Jenks team won the girls’ trophy with three freshman and three sophomores, showing a glimpse of the Trojans’ years to come. Jenks also won the boys’ race, but will graduate four of their five scorers this year.

Chezney Kelley was the leading Lady Sandite, placing 39th in 23:03, followed by Sara Abbet in 23:17 for 43rd place. The team finished ninth of nine teams. Smith led the boys’ team with a 17:56 finish for 23rd, with Yazzie right behind him in 18:01. The Sandites placed sixth of nine teams, just ten points behind Sapulpa.

Jenks also won the boys’ and girls’ junior varsity 5Ks. The Lady Sandites didn’t field a full team, but the boys placed sixth of eight schools, led by tenth-place finisher Cameron McCrary in 18:58.

CPHS Football Preview: Sandites ride four-year win streak into 92nd Highway 97 Rivalry game - presented by YellowHouse Market & Boutique

Sand Springs football’s longest-running series will be renewed for the 89th-straight year this Friday when Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School (2-6, 1-4) hosts No. 7 Sapulpa (6-2, 3-2) at 7:00 p.m.

The Sandites are riding a four-year win streak against their Highway 97 rivals. For many in the two towns, a win over their biggest competitors is valued every bit as much as a winning record or playoff appearance.

Last Week

The Sandites suffered their first shutout in a year, and first-ever shutout at the hands of the Bixby Spartans. The district front-runners dominated the first half 28-0 before the Sandite defense held them to a single score in the second half.

Caden Pennington, who had only thrown three interceptions heading into the matchup, doubled that number in a turnover-plagued battle. He was 5-14-84-3 by air, with Colton Roberts catching three of those for 64 yards. Trey Wilkerson led the ground effort with thirteen carries for 64 yards, followed by Pennington with seventeen carries for 35 yards. Pennington actually grossed 71 yards, but was sacked four times for heavy losses.

Cameron Smith had his busiest night of the season with five punts for an average of 33 yards. Jacob Snodgrass averaged fourteen yards on his two kick returns. The Sand Springs secondary had a season-best seven pass breakups with one interception from Daren Hawkins. Jerret Haley recorded four tackles and three breakups, and Justis Myers recorded two tackles for loss including a five-yard sack. Joel Mackey blocked a 45-yard field goal attempt.

The Sandite defense was stellar in the second half, giving up only one score on six possessions and five scores on twelve possessions overall. They forced two punts and three turnovers on downs.

Sapulpa outpaced Shawnee 63-35 after an insane second half. The game tied at 21-21, 28-28, and 35-35 before the Chieftains finally pulled away. An onside kick and ensuing possession gave way to the final lead shortly before the end of the third. Sapulpa rattled off four unanswered touchdowns, including a pick six.

Eli Williams led the Chieftain offense with a 7-9-148 passing performance and 114 yards on the ground. Te’zohn Taft recorded 22 carries for 212 yards.

This Season

The Sandites have had a tough year with three come-from-behind losses. They have no problem scoring and no problem getting stops, but both sides of the ball have a hard time finishing. Their only wins are against winless teams, but they have been heavy competitors in the majority of their games. They led Muskogee to start the fourth quarter, led Bartlesville till the final five seconds, and lost to Shawnee in overtime. They could just as easily be 5-3, 4-1 right now.

Sapulpa is on their first winning season since 2013 after two-straight 1-9 years. Despite the records, Sapulpa isn’t too much better than Sand Springs and things could easily go either way. While Sand Springs scheduled two out-of-state powerhouses in their non-district schedule, Sapulpa took on three run-of-the-mill 5A teams. However, they pulled off solid wins against three teams the Sandites lost to.

Against mutual opponents the Sandites are 0-4 with an average score of 19 to 33, while the Chieftains are 3-1 scoring 44 and allowing 47.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 5-6 season, led by twelfth year Head Coach Dustin Kinard with a 62-66 record. They are riding an all-time program best streak of six-straight seasons with playoff berths. They have been in Class 6A-II since its inception in 2014. The Sandites hold one gold ball, winning the 2A State title in 1966.

Sapulpa is coming off a 1-9 season, led by third-year Head Coach Robert Borgstadt (8-20). They are in their first winning season since 2013, which was also their last playoff appearance. They have been in Class 6A-II since its inception and have never won a gold ball.

The Series (Sapulpa 44-42-5)

The two teams first met in 1922 with a 36-0 Chieftain shutout. Shutouts were a recurring theme for many years, but it’s been more than a decade since the last. Sand Springs has shut out the Chieftains sixteen times, and has been shut out seventeen times. The last blanking came in 2003 when Sapulpa prevailed 40-0 against a winless Sandite team.

Sapulpa’s biggest victory came in 2002, also against an 0-10 Sandite team, at 60-19. That was also the only time either team has ever scored fifty or more points in the series. The biggest shootout came in 2009 when Sand Springs prevailed 49-45. The Sandites’ biggest win was 48-13 in 2008.

The Highway 97 Rivalry hasn’t gone into overtime since 2010, hasn’t ended in a tie since 1964, and has only seen one post-season meeting. Sapulpa won the last overtime game 21-14 and Sand Springs won the lone playoff game 42-14 in 1997.

Sapulpa Head Coach Robert Borgstadt was the Defensive Coordinator in Sand Springs from 2011 to 2015, helping the Sandites to a 32-24 record during that time, culminating in a State Finals appearance in his last year. He has yet to win a game against his former team.

Sapulpa Offensive Coordinator Ryan Nolan coached Wide Receivers at Sand Springs in 2014. Wide Receivers Coach Tim Beacham was the Head Coach at Sand Springs from 2002-2003 when the Sandites went 0-20.

The towns have so much rivalry they even launched an alumni game in 2014. Sapulpa won in 2014 and 2017. Sand Springs won in 2015 and 2016, and the game was cancelled in 2018 due to low registration. It is expected to move to a biennial format in 2019.

CPHS Football: Bixby wins first-ever shutout in Sand Springs, 35-0

The Class 6A-II No. 2 ranked Bixby Spartans (7-1, 5-0) rolled to their first ever shutout of Sand Springs Thursday night at Memorial Stadium, dominating No. 11 Charles Page High School 35-0 to remain undefeated in district action.

The Sandites (2-6, 1-4) gave up a 28-0 first-half beat down before rallying defensively in the second half.

Bixby’s average drive was 45 yards on five plays in the first half. They scored on four of six possessions, punted once, and ran out of time on their final possession of the half.

Sophomore quarterback Mason Williams connected with Cade Cavender from 33 yards out on their opening possession, capping a seven-play 57-yard drive. Then the Spartans traveled 89 yards in seven plays with a fifty-yard touchdown run from Braden Roller. Freshman standout Braylin Presley one-upped Roller with a 53-yard scoring run just a minute into the second quarter.

The home team made their first red zone penetration after Caden Pennington broke a pair of tackles for an impressive fifteen-yard run on fourth down. Unfortunately, he threw his second interception of the night at the one-yard line soon after.

Clayton Barbour made a 32-yard interception return, setting up a five-play 67-yard scoring march for the Spartans. Roller ran it in from one yard out for the final score of the half and a 28-0 lead.

The third quarter was a double shutout with rough offensive outings for both teams. Pennington and Williams traded interceptions on their opening drives, with Daren Hawkins hauling in the pick for Sand Springs.

Joel Mackey blocked a 45-yard field goal attempt on Bixby’s next possession, but the Spartans got the ball back on the very next snap with a fumble recovery by Ryan Kerr. The Sandite Defense showed up once again to force a turnover on downs with pass-breakups from Justis Myers, Luke Bratcher, and Jerret Haley.

Barrett Daniel recovered a fumble for the Spartans at the end of the third quarter, setting up a six-play 58-yard scoring drive at the start of the fourth. Williams connected with Luke Creeger from eight-yards out and Reis Vernon kicked the final point of the night.

Sand Springs averaged six plays and 24 yards per possession with five punts, three interceptions, two fumbles, and a turnover on downs. The Spartans scored five touchdowns, punted twice, gave up one interception, and three turnovers on downs.

Pennington was 5-14-84-3 passing and 17-35 on the ground. He connected with Colton Roberts for three receptions and 64 yards. Trey Wilkerson led the ground game with thirteen carries for 64 yards.

Myers, Lucas Adcock, Hayden Cramer, and Brycen Peterman led the defense in tackles, with Myers recording a five-yard sack. Haley racked up four tackles and three pass breakups. Bixby sacked Pennington four times for 33 yards.

Sand Springs will return to action next Friday with a home finale against their arch rivals from No. 7 Sapulpa (6-2, 3-2). Bixby will look to remain undefeated in district action when they host Shawnee (2-6, 2-3).

CPHS Football Halftime Report: Sandites shut out 28-0 by No. 2 Bixby

The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School football team (2-5, 1-3) gave up a 28-0 first-half shutout to the No. 2 Bixby Spartans (6-1, 4-0) Thursday evening at Memorial stadium.

The Spartans needed only seven plays to travel 57 yards for the first score of the game. Sophomore quarterback Mason Williams connected with Cade Cavender from 33 yards out on their opening possession.

Sand Springs converted three first downs on their opening drive but stalled out at midfield and had to punt. Bixby was even more lethal on their next drive, traveling 89 yards in seven plays with a fifty-yard scoring run from Braden Roller.

Caden Pennington threw his fourth interception of the season on the next drive but the Sandite defense came up big and forced their first punt of the night.

The Sandites’ next drive was also fruitless and the Spartans scored just a minute into the second quarter on a 53 yard run from freshman Braylin Presley.
