CPHS Volleyball: Jenks knocks off Sand Springs 3-0

Sand Springs - The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (4-12, 3-1) suffered a 3-0 sweep at the hands of 6A No. 7 ranked Jenks (7-6) Tuesday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House, but it was far from a beat down. After losing a tough 25-14 first set the Sandites kept the Trojans on their toes in the next two. 

Sand Springs benefited from a pair of Jenks errors before falling in a 4-2 hole in set two. The Trojans scored a pair of blocks and the Sandites had a hard time keeping their powerful attacks in the court. After some quick adjustments they soon began to battle back.

A kill from Rachel Hines tied it up at 9-9 and a pair of Jenks errors gave the home team the lead till kills from Alana Broedel and Sophie Bufogle flipped the script at 16-14. Sand Springs led once more at 18-17, but Jenks took advantage of Sandite communication errors and only gave up one more point on a tipped ball from Madison Burris.

The final set was the closest of the three and the Sandites led on several occasions with eight tie scores. Cheyenne Henry and McKenzie Harris combined for a block to lead 14-13 before the Trojans claimed the edge for the duration of the bout. Jenks won the final set 25-21.

Sand Springs Volleyball will return to action Thursday at 6:30 p.m. with a non-conference road game at 5A No. 5 Coweta (10-2).

CPHS Volleyball: Lady Sandites finish sixth at Broken Arrow Tournament, beat Bartlesville 3-1

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (4-11) has been in a rough patch lately due to brutal scheduling and an unrelenting string of top-tier competitors.

They placed sixth of seven teams at the round-robin Broken Arrow Invitational this past weekend, but all five losses came to top-ten ranked 6A programs, and in the last three days they have met three top-five opponents. 

On Thursday the Lady Sandites were swept 3-0 by 4A No. 2 Victory Christian (9-3) with sets of 25-12, 25-19, and 25-13. 6A No. 2 Norman North (11-3) got a sweep Friday (25-13, 25-14, 25-14), as did No. 3 Edmond Memorial (10-1) (25-20, 25-13, 25-13). They won set three 25-23 against No. 7 Broken Arrow (4-5), but lost the others 25-9, 25-20, and 25-15. 

The streak finally came to a close with a 3-1 win over Bartlesville (2-6), who they also defeated in conference play earlier this month. After suffering a 25-9 clobbering in the first set, the Lady Sandites surged back to win 25-20, 25-19, and 25-22. That momentum carried into the rest of the day and they made a commendable effort against their next two opponents. 

Sand Springs got off to an incredible start against No. 6 Edmond North (9-5), taking a 5-0 lead with two aces from Madison Burris and two kills from Vanessa Wyrick with Devree Youngblood assisting. Cloe Campfield made it 7-1 with an ace and the Sandites held their distance comfortably till a five-point run made it 16-15. Wyrick broke that steak up with a kill, but the Huskies went right back to it and came from behind for a 25-19 victory.

Morgan Goerke served an ace and an error to start the second set, then Lily DeGrace and Youngblood traded kills. Campfield notched an ace for a 3-2 lead and the game tied three times before the Huskies put it in the bag. An eight point run put it at 17-7 in Edmond’s favor and the Sandites never recovered, falling 25-14.

Game three was a beat down right out of the gate. Edmond took a 2-0 lead, Raylynn Mong aced to tie it, DeGrace posted a block and Cheyenne Henry tied it with a kill. Then the Huskies went on an eight point run with four aces from Sarah Holmes. Holmes finally made an error, but Kamryn Bacus picked it up from there with a kill and three aces before Youngblood hit a kill.

The Lady Sandites began to stage a comeback with a four-point run and a pair of kills from Henry, cutting it to 18-12. DeGrace scored two of her own, then Sand Springs went on a ten point run. Henry scored a kill and a block, Youngblood scored a pair of kills, and Mong served three aces for the 22-20 lead. The Huskies wouldn’t have an upset on their hands, however, and surged back for the 25-23 win.

No. 10 Southmoore (4-6) took a commanding 8-3 lead in their first game against the Sandites and rolled steadily forward for a 25-16 victory. .

The second set was far more competitive with the Sandites in control for most of the action. Mong scored back to back aces for the lead at 5-3 and Sand Springs looked to be in good shape in the final stretch. But the Sabercats came from a 19-13 deficit to win it 25-22. 

Westmoore took an 11-8 lead in the final game with a four point run and never looked back in another 25-16 win. 

The Lady Sandites will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a home battle against Frontier Valley foe No. 8 Jenks (7-6, 2-1).

CPHS Softball: Sandites go undefeated at Stillwater Festival, upset Westmoore

Sabrina Usher is the only Lady Sandite to hit a home run this season.

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (9-3) notched two solid wins at the Stillwater Festival on Friday. After a 14-0 pummeling of Edmond Memorial (4-8) in game one, they notched a 2-1 upset of Westmoore (13-3) at Oklahoma State University's Cowgirl Stadium. 

Sophomore pitcher Aliyah Taff (2-1, 2-3) got the win with two hits, five strikeouts, and no walks in the four inning run-rule victory over Edmond Memorial and Sabrina Usher hit her second home run of the season.

Rogers State-commit Kimi Presnell was first on the scoreboard thanks to a team effort; reaching on a walk, stealing second, and making third and home on a pair of sacrifices. 

Cameron Clemons scored on an error in the second inning, Presnell doubled in Madelyn Blair, Drew Hawkins scored on a bunt from Makenna Skaggs, and Usher went yard to drive in Presnell and Skaggs for a 7-0 lead.

Another Presnell double brought in Felicity Horn, and Hawkins notched another run on an error in the third. Luttrell and Blair both hit RBI doubles in the fourth, then Hawkins and Blair both scored on errors for the final runs of the game. 

The second win went to Blair (4-1, 23-6) with four strikeouts, five walks, and seven hits in the seven inning bout with Westmoore. 

The Lady Jags were first on the board with three-straight hits and McKayla Franks brought in Aynslee Linduff with a single. They stranded three in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth, and two in the fifth.

Sand Springs made it on base in the first, second, and fourth, but their big break came in the bottom of the fifth. Skaggs singled on loaded bases to bring in Hawkins and Luttrell scored on an error to take the lead once and for all. 

Clemons drilled a triple in the sixth but was picked off soon after, but the Sandites wouldn't end up needing the extra run. The Jags secured a walk and a single in the top of the seventh, but Madison Lee caught a pop fly to seal the victory. 

Sand Springs Softball will return to action Tuesday at Jenks High School (10-5) at 5:00 p.m in a non-district Frontier Valley Conference battle. 

CPHS Softball: Sandites run rule Sapulpa 11-0 in district debut

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (7-3) won their first district game in style with an 11-0 run-rule shutout of their Highway 97 rivals from Sapulpa (2-10, 2-3) Thursday evening. 

Madelyn Blair (3-1, 22-6), a senior University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma commit, got the win on the mound, giving up only two hits and no walks against five strikeouts.

The visiting Sandites wasted no time, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI double from Sabrina Usher, who came in on a ground out from Blair. Kimi Presnell scored the first and third runs of the game, then Makenna Skaggs made it 4-0 on a ground ball from Jacie Taber. 

Felicity Horn scored on an error in the third, Elizabeth Luttrell brought in Cameron Clemons on a sacrifice fly, Madison Lee scored on a passed ball, and Presnell scored on an error for an 8-0 advantage. 

Horn scored on a passed ball in the fourth. Presnell scored Luttrell on a triple and came in on a single from Usher for the final run of the game.

Both of Sapulpa's singles came in the bottom of the fourth but Usher preserved the shutout with a tag at home. Sand Springs put two on base in the fifth but failed to score and Blair struck out two to conclude the game. 

Sand Springs has suffered through five rain-outs this season, including their first two district games against Ponca City and Putnam City North. They will return to action Friday at the Stillwater Festival with games against Edmond Memorial (4-6) and Westmoore (13-2). 

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites sweep Muskogee 3-0

(Muskogee, OK) - After a tough start the Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (3-5) rolled to their second 3-0 sweep of the season against Class 6A No. 20 ranked Muskogee (5-5) Tuesday evening. The first two sets were competitive but the visitors ran away with the third. 

The Lady Sandites suffered a winless weekend at Union High School, securing only two sets in the five match tournament. They were swept 3-0 by No. 2 Norman North (7-1), No. 6 Edmond North (5-2), and No. 5 Stillwater (5-4) and fell 3-1 to No. 18 Union (1-7) and 5A No. 3 Bishop Kelley (5-2). They will get rematches with Union and Kelley later this season, but for now they are undefeated in Frontier Valley Conference play at 3-0.

The final score at Muskogee was not indicative of the closeness of the first set. While the Sandites ultimately prevailed 25-16, they closed game one on an 8-2 run and the Rougherettes were competitive for most of the bout. Sand Springs tried to pull away early on with a 7-2 run for an 11-6 lead, but a kill from Madison Wiebe, an ace from Paige Irwin and a trio of Sandite errors cut it back to a one-point game. Their head start was foiled but they finished strong with kills from Devree Youngblood, Cloe Campfield, and Vanessa Wyrick and an ace from Raylynn Mong.

The second set was a replay of the first, tight at first, then Sand Springs began to run away with it only for the hosts to claw their way back up. Youngblood scored back-to-back kills and Campfield aced to start the game, but the scrappy Lady Roughers hung tight at 14-13 till the Lady Sandites ran it up to 23-14. Then, just when it looked like a sure victory, four faults and an ace from Alesha Arriaga cut it back to 23-19. A Rougher error and a kill from McKenzie Harris secured the victory. 

After tying it up at 5-5 the Roughers completely dropped out of contention in set three. A 10-1 run more or less put the match out of reach and first year Head Coach Sydney Bond got to sub in her third string, giving twelve players varsity experience for the night before wrapping it up at 25-19.

Campfield led all scorers with eleven kills and two aces, followed by Youngblood with twelve kills. Wyrick and Madison Burris scored six kills apiece and Madison Blaylock recorded five digs. Mong had two aces and nineteen assists and Burris had three digs and fifteen assists.

Sand Springs Volleyball will return to action Thursday evening with a 6:15 p.m. match at 4A No. 2 Victory Christian (8-3).

CPHS Softball: Sandites split wins at RSU Festival, beat Claremore 6-1

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (6-3) split a double header at Rogers State University Thursday morning, falling 3-2 to Claremore Sequoyah, but defeating Claremore High School 6-1.

The undefeated Eagles (8-0) scored all three of their runs in the first inning as Callie Schultz and Lauryn Anderson came in on a home run from Ariel Thompson. Thompson was the star of the show, going three-for-three at the plate and registering thirteen strikeouts on the mound.

Kimi Presnell scored the Sandites' first run in the bottom of the third on a single from Makenna Skaggs, who also doubled in Liz Luttrell in the fifth. Madelyn Blair (2-1, 21-6) struck out five, walked three, and gave up eight hits for her first loss of the season.

Aliyah Taff (2-1, 2-3) led the Sandites to a win over the Zebras (1-1) with three strikeouts, no walks, and five hits.

Sand Springs stranded loaded bases in the top of the first after two errors and a single but got out to an early lead in the second with three hits and a walk. Presnell doubled in Drew Hawkins, Skaggs sacrificed to score Luttrell, then Presnell came in on a single from Sabrina Usher.

Cameron Clemons hit a sacrifice fly in the third to score Taber and Luttrell singled in Horn for a 5-0 lead. The Zebras also got on the board that inning with an RBI double from Maddox Thomas and a run from Rylee Vanaman. Skaggs batted in Presnell for the final run in the top of the sixth. 

The Lady Sandites will return to action Monday at 5:30 p.m. with their district debut at Putnam City North (1-7).
