Wrestling: Daton Fix to take on defending Silver Medalist for ticket to World Championships

Daton Fix concluded his high school career in 2017 as a four-time undefeated State Champion with a 168-0 record. 

Oklahoma State University freshman and Charles Page High School Class of 2017 graduate Daton Fix (15-3) is back in the spotlight as the Final X Senior World Team Trial approaches. On Saturday, June 9 Fix will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on Thomas Gilman in the last rung of the ladder to the World Championships.

In April Fix placed second at the U.S. Open, outscoring his first three opponents 24-0 with two first-period technical falls before falling 2-2 to University North Carolina assistant coach Tony Ramos. The former NCAA National Champion was awarded the win on criteria, but Fix got a rematch in May and made up for the loss.

At the Senior World Team Trials three weeks ago, Fix again made quick work of his pre-finals opponents. He teched former Oklahoma State All-American Eddie Klimara 14-2 in 2:07, topped former Illinois All-American Zane Richards 9-2, then teched former Minnesota All-American Zane 10-0 in 2:00. Fix won a best-of-three finals series against Ramos with 4-3 and 10-3 decisions.

On Saturday Fix will attempt to upset Gilman, who won Silver at the 2017 World Championship in Paris, France. While Gilman was coming in Runner-Up in France, Fix was going the distance for Gold at the Junior Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Fix has an extensive international resume at the Junior level, including Worlds Bronze in 2016, but is still relatively new to the Senior scene. He swept the Under 23 World Team Trials in October but was eliminated in the first round at Poland.

Fix made his debut at No. 15 in the FloWrestling International Freestyle rankings after topping Ramos. Gilman dropped from seventh to thirteenth in those same rankings after falling to Cuba’s Reineri Ortega in the Pan-American Championships.

The first round of the trials will kick off at 6:00 p.m. Central Time in Bob Devaney Sports Center at the University of Nebraska. Fix and Gilman will be the fifth of seven matches on the card. Round two will begin approximately at 7:15 and the final round will be at 8:30.

Also defending their spots on the Mens’ World Team are 70 KG Silver Medalist James Green, 74 KG Champion Jordan Burroughs, and 97 KG Champion Kyle Snyder.

This year’s World Championship will be held in Budapest, Hungary October 20-28.

The Sand Springs Team Big wrestling club brought home ten gold medals from the OKUSA State Tournament last month in Cushing, finishing fourth out of seventy-seven teams in total standings.

The Sandites placed third in Schoolboy Freestyle and Cadet Freestyle, and secured a team State title in Schoolboy Greco-Roman.

Threestyle Wrestling, based out of Catoosa and Owasso, won the tournament overall with 667 points. Edmond’s Oklahoma Wrestling Academy came in runner-up with 332, Prodigy Wrestling scored 250, and Sand Springs scored 246.

Grady Mittasch (25-6 FS, 17-7 GR) took first place in both styles, competing in Novice at 78 pounds, with three technical falls.

Christian Forbes (11-0 FS, 8-0 GR) swept both styles for a pair of 94 pound Cadet titles with four tech falls and a pin.

Carter Young (38-6 FS) won both styles for a pair of 113 pound Cadet titles with five techs and a pin.

Ethan White (21-8 FS, 8-2 GR) won the Schoolboy Greco title at 136 pounds with a pin and a tech, and placed second in Freestyle with a pin and a tech.

Abraham Flores (14-3 FS, 10-3 GR) won the Schoolboy Greco title at 114 pounds with a pin and a tech fall, and placed third in Freestyle with a tech.

Clayton Giddens-Buttram (8-0) took first place at the Schoolboy Freestyle tournament at 77 pounds with a 10-0 technical fall and a 4-3 finals decision.

Bryce Fisher (25-2) won the Schoolboy Freestyle title at 149 pounds with a pin and two decisions.

Josey Jernegan (2-1 FS, 2-1 GR) placed second in Schoolboy in both styles at ninety pounds with three technical falls and a fall.

TJ Long (5-2 FS, 6-3 GR) placed second in Junior Freestyle and fourth in Greco with two tech falls.

Cameron White (9-9 FS) placed third in Schoolboy in both styles at 110 pounds with one pin and two tech falls.

Several Team Big wrestlers represented Team Oklahoma at the Southern Plains Regional in Dodge City Kansas this past weekend.

Mittasch won both styles at Novice 78 with three pins and a tech. Balance Johnson (3-1 FS, 4-0 GR) won both styles at Novice 160 with three pins. Long placed second in freestyle and third in Greco at Novice 126.

CPHS Fishing: Mack Taylor and Reese David qualify for National Tournament

The 2017-2018 Oklahoma Bass Nation High School season came to a close Sunday afternoon at Fort Gibson Lake, and two Sand Springs teams placed top ten in the final trail event.

Mack Taylor and Reese David finished seventh on Sunday with five fish weighing 13.15 pounds for fourth place in the final State standings. 362 points punched their ticket to the National Tournament at Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee. The event will be held August 2-4.

Hayden King and Collin Brady came in runner-up with the best finish of their career, catching four fish weighing 14.7 pounds. They finished the season 46th in State standings with 188 points. 

Seth Kearns and Cole Scott placed 24th at the final event with two fish weighing 5.13 pounds. They finished the season with 243 points for 31st place.

Braden Millican and Ty Steelman ended their senior season in 21st place overall with 279 points after a 31st place finish on Sunday. They caught two fish weighing 3.92 points. 

Noah Daczewitz and Hunter Hilger placed 47th on Sunday with a 2.06 catch and 38th overall with 217 points.

Kyle and Kale Hilligoss finished the season sixteenth with 300 points. John Miller and Caden Pennington finished the year 44th with 202 points. Jerret Haley and Dalton Duvall finished the year 61st with 154 points. Austin Smith and Joe Nelson finished 71st with 137 points. Corbin Williams and Montana McCarty placed 114th with 44 points.

136 teams competed in the 2017-2018 season.

CPHS Track: Sandites send seven to State, set three personal records

The Charles Page High School boys' track and field team sent seven athletes to the 6A State Championship in Yukon this weekend. They competed in nine events and two set personal records.

Senior Malonn Moyer wrapped up his high school career with style, setting personal records in both shot put and discus. He threw 48'03.50" in shot put for tenth place and 160'09.00" for seventh in discus.

Junior Regional Champion Joel Mackey set a personal record in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 10.68 seconds for ninth place. He also finished tenth in the 200 meter with a time of 22.79.

Defending State Champion Aden Baughman settled for fifth place in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:59.76, less than a second behind the new champion. Jaelyn Jackson placed tenth in 2:01.05. 

Colby Community College-signed senior Ian Baustert finished his high school career with a 4:50.34 finish in the 1600 run for fourteenth place. 

Mason Shipman placed fifteenth in the 300 hurdles in 43.99 seconds. 

The Regional Champion team of Jackson, Baustert, Baughman, and Nelson Yazzie combined for a sixth place finish in the 3200 relay with a time of 8:23.02. They previously set the school record at 8:08.99 at Regionals.

Edmond Memorial High School won both the men's and women's track meets.

State Records:

• Bixby senior Brandee Presley broke a nine year old record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.44. 
• Putnam City West junior Jesse Porter broke a 38-year-old 100 meter dash record with a time of 10.33. Mustang senior Damian Close also beat the existing record in 10.34 for second place.
• The Union 4x200 relay team beat Jenks's 2014 record with a time of 1:26.04.
• Westmoore junior Anthony Riley handily beat his own State record in long jump, topping his prior year's distance at 25'01.00". 
  • Moore senior Patrick Larrison beat his own shot put record with a throw of 65'07.00" to beat his last year's score. He also beat a nine year old record in discus with a distance of 210'09.00" and was 41 feet better than the runner up. 
• Charles Page Class of 2017 graduate Cheyenne Walden's State record of 4:57.07 survived the 1600 meter competition.

CPHS Tennis: Lady Sandites send four to State Tournament

The Charles Page High School varsity tennis team sent four athletes to the OSSAA 6A State Tournament last week for the first time in school history.

Abigail McGehee qualified in #1 Singles and Delaney Blaylock qualified in #2 Singles. Madison Blaylock and Lindsey Smith qualified in #2 Doubles.

Bixby won the tournament overall and Jenks came in Runner-Up. 

The Boys' State Tournament will be held May 11-12 at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. Sand Springs did not qualify any athletes. 

CPHS Golf: Carson Griggs places fifth at 6A State Championship

Charles Page High School senior Carson Griggs concluded his high school career Tuesday afternoon at Forest Ridge Golf Club in Broken Arrow with a fifth place finish in the OSSAA 6A State Championship.

Griggs had a rough start to the tournament, tied for 25th place after shooting a 78 in round one. 

The Sandite battled back excellently with the third-lowest score in round two at 71 strokes and ended day one tied for sixth place.

Griggs had the third-best score of round three as well, shooting a 73 to improve to fifth place, tied with Broken Arrow's Gabe Replogle at 222 strokes. 

A four-time State Qualifier, Griggs placed nineteenth as a freshman, twentieth as a sophomore, and was Runner-Up as a junior. He will continue his golfing career at the University of Denver. 

Edmond North's Brock Polhill handily won the tournament with a 211, including a tournament-best round of 67. He was the only athlete to hit sub-seventy in any round. Owasso's Austin Enzbrenner came in runner-up with a score of 215. 

Edmond North won the team title with a score of 881, followed by Owasso at 896. 

CPHS Fishing: Two Sand Springs teams in top-ten State standings after Texoma tournaments

116 boats descended on Lake Texoma this weekend for a pair of Oklahoma Bass Nation High School Trail events, including ten teams from Sand Springs.

Reese David and Mack Taylor had a career-best haul of five fish totaling 10.91 pounds for twelfth place on Saturday. On Sunday they led all Sandites with four fish weighing 7.22 pounds for eighteenth place. They improved to fourth place overall in the state standings with 340 points.

Kyle and Kale Hilligoss placed fiftieth on Saturday with two fish weighing 3.56 pounds and 38th on Sunday with two fish weighing 4.69 pounds. They dropped to eighth in the state with 300 points.

Braden Millican and Ty Steelman placed 51st on Saturday with two fish weighing 3.33 pounds and are 26th in the state with 219 points.

John Miller and Caden Pennington hauled in three fish on Saturday for 25th place with 6.38 pounds. They finished 39th on Sunday with two fish weighing 4.54 pounds and are 31st in the state with 202 points.

Noah Daczewitz and Hunter Hilger led the Sandites with a ninth place finish on Saturday, catching the five-fish limit for a total weight of 12.38 pounds, the second-largest catch of their careers. They are tied for 38th in the state with 173 points.

Jerrett Haley and Corbin Williams had the second-best haul of their career on Sunday, catching three fish weighing 6.73 pounds for 22nd place. They placed 46th on Saturday with two fish weighing 3.91 pounds. The duo just cracked the top fifty in the state with 166 points to tie for 47th.

Austin Smith and Joe Nelson had a career-best performance on Sunday with three fish weighing 5.82 pounds for thirtieth place. They caught a 2.86 bass for 55th on Saturday.

Carl McCalaflin and Hunter Johnson caught a 1.44 bass for 68th on Saturday. On Sunday they finished 45th with a career-best catch of two fish weighing 2.87 pounds.

Colin Brady and Hayden King caught a 1.59 pound bass on Sunday for 57th place.

Seth Kearns and Cole Scott caught a 1.38 pound bass for sixtieth place on Sunday.

The final high school trail event will be held June 3rd at Fort Gibson Lake. The final standings will be based on the top four performances of the year for each team. The top teams in the state will qualify for the National Tournament on Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee this August.
