CPHS Track: Sandites qualify seven for State Championship

The Charles Page High School track and field team had one of its best showings in school history at the Regional Championship in Tahlequah this weekend.

The Sandites crowned four Regional Champions in three events and qualified seven for State.

The last time the Sandites won three events at Regionals was in 2003 when Marcus Mayes brought home gold in the 400, 800, and 1600-meter runs.

Jaelyn Jackson, Ian Baustert, Nelson Yazzie, and Aden Baughman shaved more than eight seconds off of the previous school record in the 3200-meter relay, finishing in 8:08.99 for first place. The previous record of 8:17.24 was set by the 2013 Regional Championship team of Andrew Coleman, Logan Kinard, Jermaine McClain, and Levi Jiminez.

Baughman and Jackson both double qualified, taking first and second respectively in the 800-meter run. Baughman, the defending State Champion, finished in 1:55.75, closely followed by Jackson with a personal-best 1:57.76.

Baustert double qualified with a third-place finish in the 1600, setting a PR of 4:35.53.

Joel Mackey was a double qualifier, taking first place in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200. He set a personal record of 10.84 for second in the 100 preliminaries, then knocked it down to 10.71 in the finals. He came in Runner-Up in the 200 in 21.94.

Mason Shipman qualified for State in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.21. He also set a 16.52 PR for sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Malonn Moyer double qualified in discus and shot put, both with new PRs. He placed second in discus with a distance of 145'08.00" and placed third in shot put with a distance of 46'10.50".

The OSSAA 6A State Championship track meet will be held at Yukon High School, May 11-12.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites' season ends with 7-2 Regional finals loss to Owasso

The Charles Page High School baseball team ended their season with a valiant stand at Owasso, but fell 7-2 in the Regional Championship finals.

Sand Springs (24-12) defeated Sapulpa twice to earn their way to the finals, and only needed to beat Owasso (28-8) one time to punch their ticket to the State Championship. Instead it was the home team with their seventeenth Regional title in the past twenty years.

CD White batted in Connor Beichler with a single, Nate Ackenhausen doubled to score White, and the Rams took a two run lead in the first inning. Keaton Ranallo hit a lead off triple in the second and scored on a ground ball from Caleb Denny. Denny notched another RBI with a solo home run in the fourth.

Ty Steelman got the Sandites on the board in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a double and scoring on a single from Cal Watkins.

Beichler made it 5-1 on a single from Denny in the top of the sixth, then Denny and White both scored on a single from Cameron Thompson.

Sand Springs tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh with back to back singles from Riley Rutledge and Braden Askew. Rutledge came in on a ground ball from Kyler Copeland, but that would be the last run of the season.

Brayden Lloyd got the win on the mound for Owasso with five hits, five strikeouts, and no walks in seven innings.

Tyler Ash (3-2) got the loss for Sand Springs and Steelman (3-0, 3-1) and Brock Youngblood (4-4, 10-12) also saw action.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites head to Regional finals with 6-5 win over Sapulpa

A seventh inning rally gave Sand Springs a one-run lead on Sapulpa and it was enough to punch their ticket to the Regional Championship finals Thursday evening in Owasso.

The Charles Page High School baseball team (24-11) won a 6-5 rivalry bout with Sapulpa (23-11-1) to stay alive in the Regional playoffs.

Sapulpa defeated Owasso (27-8) on Wednesday and Owasso defeated Sand Springs, making it anyone's game on day two. After eliminating the Chieftains from contention, the Sandites will now look to avenge an 11-5 loss against the host team. The winner will earn their way to the State Tournament next week at Oral Roberts University.

Sand Springs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with two walks and two singles in the top of the first inning. Riley Rutledge batted in Ty Steelman and scored on a hit from Kyler Copeland.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites fall 11-5 to Owasso at Regionals, Adcock hits home run

After winning their first game of the day over their arch rivals from Sapulpa, the Charles Page High School baseball team (23-11) suffered an 11-5 defeat at the hands of Owasso (27-8) in the second round of the Regional Tournament.

The host team was defeated 6-5 by the Chieftains (23-10-1) earlier in the day, leaving each team with one loss in a double-elimination tournament.

Owasso claimed the lead in the third as Ackenhausen singled to score CD White. The Rams picked up three walks and scattered four hits for a 7-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth.

Kameron Adcock hit his second home run of the season in the fifth inning to tie Tyler Ash as the leading homer hitter on the team.

The Rams pushed their lead to 11-2 in the sixth with two walks and three singles before the Sandites tried to rally.

Sand Springs loaded the bases with singles from Cale Savage, Adcock, and Steelman. Savage scored on a sacrifice fly by Cal Watkins, then Adcock came in on a single from Riley Rutledge. Steelman scored the final run of the game on a ground ball by Ash.

Kyler Copeland walked to load the bases with a pair of outs, but Jacob Snodgrass flied out to left field to bring the game to a close.
