CPHS Basketball: No. 10 Sandites hold off Bixby 60-42, Savage scores 31

Sand Springs - The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School Boys' Basketball Team (13-4, 6-3) overcame a feisty Bixby squad Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, pummeling their foes 19-7 in the final stanza after a relatively close affair. 

Noah Love and Sam Hink scored on the Spartans’ opening possessions before Colt Savage got the Sandites on the board with a pair of free throws. Xavier Glenn scored one of his own, then Matt Price hit a three to tie it up. Hink got a putback on his own shot, but the Sandites rattled off seven-straight and never surrendered the lead. Glenn scored back-to-back to make it a one-point game, but Savage hit a buzzer beater for the 15-11 advantage.

Cale Savage scored his second three of the night to kick off the second period. Glenn and Richardson exchanged twos, then the Spartans cut it to 20-18 before Marlo Fox,  Cole Durkee, and Colt Savage scored back-to-back-to-back. Hink and Love combined for five, but once again Colt Savage had a buzzer-beater, this time a layup, to make it 28-23.

Colt Savage picked up where he left off in the second half, making a three-point play and a three-point field goal for the double-digit lead. Glenn cut it right back down with a three of his own, but Durkee was next up with a deep ball. Neither team scored back-to-back till Glenn sank a buzzer-beater three to make it 41-35.

Price scored two to start the final period, Hink retaliated, then Colt Savage scored five. Love and Brennan Breese tried to get the Spartans back in contention, cutting it to 48-40, but the Sandites ran away with it, only giving up one more basket for an eighteen-point win. 

Colt Savage, a University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior, led all scorers with 31 points and was the only Sandite in the double digits. Hink and Glenn scored sixteen apiece for the visiting Spartans. 

The Sandites will return to action Friday with a Highway 97 Rivalry rematch with No. 11 Sapulpa (12-6, 4-5), who they previously defeated 73-64 in week two. The Spartans will take on No. 8 Owasso (14-4, 6-3) and try to avenge a 72-46 season-opening loss.

CPHS Basketball: Girls knock off No. 8 Bixby 69-56, Johnson scores 26

Sand Springs - The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School Girls’ Basketball Team (12-5) improved to 8-1 in Frontier Valley Conference standings Tuesday night, fending off No. 8 Bixby 69-56 at the Ed Dubie Field House. Junior standout Destiny Johnson led all scorers with 26 points, followed by University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter with twenty. Senior Maddie Bittle led the Spartans with twenty.

The Spartans (13-5, 6-3) came away with a steal for their first possession and drew first blood on a layup from Sarah Tyree, but Johnson was quick to give Sand Springs the lead with back-to-back two-pointers, followed by a three from Jacie Taber. Johnson scored her sixth point, then Taber logged her second assist on a three from Isabella Regalado for the double-digit lead.

Dariann Myles broke up the Sandites’ sixteen-point streak, but by the end of the first period the home team was up 19-10, led by Johnson with eleven.

The throttling continued in the second period as Johnson scored on a steal and Regalado rattled off three deep balls for a twenty-point advantage. The game evened out from there, and the teams maintained their distance till close to the end of the half. After trailing 40-16, the Spartans scored eight in a row to narrow the gap.

Tyree made a pair of free throws to kick off the second half. Madison Burris scored with an assist from Holly Kersgieter, Kersgieter scored four with an assist from Burris to make it 46-26, then the Spartans went on a run.

Sydney Page, Sydnee Schovanec, Myles, and Maddie Bittle scored fifteen in a row to make it a single-digit deficit for the first time since the first quarter.

Kersgieter drained a three to kick off the fourth period. Schovanec made a three-point play, then fouled out and sent Johnson to the line for a three-point play and a seven-point run that put the Sandites back in front a double-digit lead at 60-44 before Bittle scored on a layup. By then it was too late for a comeback, and the Sandites and Spartans exchanged blows till the clock ran out at 69-56.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday when they host No. 20 Sapulpa (10-8, 5-4) in the second installment of Highway 97 Rivalry. In December the Sandites trumped the Chieftains 60-48 in the third game of the season. 

Bixby will have another tough competitor Friday when they host No. 4 Owasso (15-3, 6-3). The Spartans previously topped the Rams 52-36 in the season-opener. The Spartans are coming off back-to-back losses, however, while Owasso has won their last five games.

Undefeated No. 2 Bartlesville (18-0, 9-0) continues to rest atop the conference after knocking off both Sand Springs and Bixby last week.

CPHS Basketball: Girls pummel Muskogee 67-27, Kersgieter scores 19

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School Girls’ Basketball team (11-5) snapped back from a loss to undefeated Bartlesville with a resounding Friday night victory in Muskogee. The Lady Sandites throttled the Lady Roughers (2-13) 67-27 to improve to 7-1 in the Frontier Valley Conference. 

Sand Springs came out aggressive and picked up three offensive rebounds and two steals in the first minute. They had trouble finding the net, however, and missed their first six shots before Isabella Regalado hit pay dirt.

University of Kansas-committed junior Holly Kersgieter scored three baskets in a row for the Sandites plus a free throw, broken up by a goal from Taylor Myers. Lonnesha Hill scored a pair of free throws for Muskogee, then the Sandites rattled off eleven points before Grace Whitaker iced the first three-pointer of the night to end the first period 20-7. Kersgieter had twelve points in the first stanza alone.

The second quarter was a lot slower as Johnson didn’t score the first points till a minute and a half into the period. The Roughers scored only six points in the period, but held the visitors to thirteen.

Regalado connected on a deep three to kick off the third period, D’Asia Brown hit a two, then the Sandites scored ten in a row to triple the Roughers at 46-15 before Hill and Myers broke up the run. Kimi Presnell made her way into the score book, Myers scored a free throw for Muskogee, Madison Burris scored a three for the Sandites, and the home team trailed 51-19 to start the final period.

Presnell added five more points in the third period, then the Sandites ran the bench on Muskogee. Fourteen saw action, ten made their way onto the scoreboard, and the visitors ended the night with nine straight for the forty-point victory.

Kersgieter led all scorers with nineteen points and six rebounds, followed by Johnson with fourteen points and seven rebounds. Myers paced the Roughers with nine points.

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in a home game against No. 12 Bixby (13-4, 6-2), while the Roughers will look to pick up their first conference win against No. 19 Jenks (8-9, 3-5).

CPHS Basketball: Richardson's double-double leads Sandites past Muskogee 44-34

6'4" sophomore Davon Richardson recorded fourteen points and fifteen rebounds Friday night, pacing the Sandites to a 44-34 victory over the Muskogee High School Roughers (7-10). Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School improved to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in the Frontier Valley Conference, while Muskogee dropped to 4-4 in conference. 

C.J. Parks started the game off on fire for the Roughers, scoring three baskets for a 6-0 lead before Richardson got the Sandites on the board with a free throw. Xavier Brown hit a three for Muskogee, Richardson and Kendrick Williams hit twos, then Brooks Haddock hit another three for a 12-5 Rougher lead.

Sand Springs took control of the game from there, ending the first period with five-straight. Kaunor Ashley started the second period with a two for the Roughers, but Cale Savage hit the first three for the Sandites then Colt Savage scored four and Richardson added two for a 19-14 advantage. The home team went back to their bread and butter with a layup from Parks, then Brian McVay scored two from the charity stripe and hit a layup to reclaim the lead before the half.

Cameron Clemons hit a three to start the third, but Richardson, Colt Savage, and Cole Durkee combined for eight to reclaim the lead. It didn’t last long, however, as McVay hit back-to-back jump shots to tie it at 27-27. Cale Savage had the final say, however, and Sand Springs started the final stanza up by two.

Richardson scored the first basket of the fourth period, Parks retaliated, then Haddock hit a deep three for the lead. Brown scored a free throw, Richardson made a three-point play, Colt Savage scored two, and the Sandites held the lead for the duration. Richardson scored two, Parks made one, Cale Savage scored two, then Matt Price scored a pair of free throws to make it 42-34 with 28 seconds left. Colt Savage had a buzzer beater to finish the game with twelve points.

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. with a conference home game against Bixby (7-10, 2-6). Muskogee will take on Jenks (5-12, 0-8) Tuesday.

CPHS Wrestling: Sandites top No. 8 Jenks 38-23

Class 6A No. 5 ranked Charles Page High School (10-1) improved to 4-1 in Frontier Valley Conference wrestling with a 38-23 Thursday night victory over No. 8 Jenks (9-2). The Sandites won eight matches to six and picked up bonus points in several.

Davon Taylor (16-17) started off the night at 170 pounds and scored first with a takedown, but Colt Freeman quickly reversed and ran the match till the third period. Trailing 7-5 in the final stretch, Taylor escaped and took a shot with ten seconds left, but Freeman came out on top with a 9-6 decision.

Noah Almy (4-6 season, 28-26 career) took on Jaylon Pitts and scored first with a second period takedown. Pitts escaped and scored on the Sandite, then Almy escaped to tie it up. Pitts took the lead with a third period escape and scored a pair of takedowns for the 9-5 decision.

Josh Fincannon (9-14) scored on Ethan Felts immediately and added a trio of back points before the buzzer. He added escapes in the second and third periods and scored a takedown with 45 seconds left for the 9-1 major decision to get the Sandites on the board.

Gage Fain (15-7, 54-45) easily took down Jared Galli twice in the first period and added nearfall points for a 6-1 lead. He picked up two more takedowns in the second period for an 11-3 advantage before sticking his foe for the 10-6 team lead.

Caleb Orr took a 4-1 first period lead against Robbie Parrish (2-11) and rode it out for the duration.

Carter Young (32-1) won his fifteenth-straight match by pinning Sian Suan in 1:13, then State Champion Riley Weir (22-6, 84-24) won his fourteenth-straight by pinning Jonathan Kelvington in 2:14 after taking a 10-3 first period lead. Seth Jones (22-12) scored immediately on Matt Ruley and pinned the Trojan in fifty seconds and the Sandites pushed their lead to 28-9.

Blake Sargent (9-4, 98-29) returned to the lineup for the first time since the Broken Arrow dual to take on Branden Elrod. Sargent scored early in the first and started the second on top with a 2-0 lead. Elrod reversed to tie it up and started the third period on top, but Sargent reversed again for a 4-3 decision.

Irwin Portillo (24-16, 30-21) took a 2-0 first period lead on Garrett Weis, then added a reversal, takedown, and nearfall points in the second. A takedown in the third period gave Portillo the 14-4 major decision to clinch the dual at 35-9.

Scott Patton (22-16, 29-18) was well matched against Enrie Chavez and the two went scoreless till the third period when Patton got a point on a penalty. The Sandite escaped soon after but Chavez scored the lone takedown of the match to tie it up. Patton escaped again and survived a pair of shots for the 3-2 decision.

Austin Daniels took a 5-0 first period lead on Chris Kirby (16-6) and ultimately prevailed 16-0 in 4:00 technical fall.

Kaleb Tabor (19-10) had an equally tough competitor in Drake Vannoy and gave up a pair of takedowns before reversing late in the second period. Vannoy scored again in the third, then gave up a penalty for a 6-3 decision.

The dual wrapped up at 160 as Jasanee Harjo (3-6) fell in 51 seconds to Killian McGrew

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday, February 6th with a 7:00 p.m. home dual against Bixby (0-6). Jenks won’t dual again till Dual State in February, but they will travel to the Pryor Tournament Friday morning.
