The No. 3 ranked Charles Page High School Lady Sandite basketball team (4-0) continued their undefeated start to the season with a 68-32 throttling of Tulsa Memorial (0-4) in the first round of the Bishop Kelley Invitational Thursday morning. The two-time defending tournament champions will return to action Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Sandites struck first when University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter fielded the tipoff and scored an uncontested two-pointer in the first seconds of the game. The Chargers responded to the Sandites' first four scores and took their only lead of the game with a three-pointer from Raelynn Woods at 5-4. After Tatiana Young tied it up at 8-8 the Sandites went on a thirteen-point run, including nine-straight from Isabella Regalado, to close the quarter. Kersgieter had ten points and five rebounds in that stanza.

Memorial's Erika Edmo struck first to start the second quarter. Jacie Taber scored four straight, Woods hit another three, Destiny Johnson scored four straight, then Young and Johnson exchanged blows. Johnson had the last eleven points for the Sandites before breaking for halftime with a 36-17 lead.

Sand Springs scored thirteen more to start the second half with back-to-back three-pointers from Regalado, bringing her total to fifteen points for the evening. Kersgieter scored three-straight baskets and Taber gave her team a 52-20 advantage before Head Coach Dustin Morrow pulled the starters.

The second string continued the hammering with four-straight from Ashlee Bunch and a field goal from Madison Burris to make it 58-20. Jade Shrum scored a three-point basket to start off the fourth quarter, Daniela Solis scored on a putback, and McKenzie Harris drained a three to end the game..

Twelve Lady Sandites saw action, ten made their way in the scorebook, and three had double digits. Kersgieter led all scorers with seventeen, Regalado had fifteen, and Johnson added thirteen. Young had twelve for the Chargers and Woods scored eleven.

Sand Springs will take on the winner of 5A No. 9 Claremore (2-0) vs. 5A No. 18 Bishop Kelley (0-2) Friday at 7:30 p.m. Memorial will play the loser at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Sand Springs previously bested Kelley 64-43 last Friday.

CPHS Wrestling Coach Kelly Smith presented with Pacesetter Award

Charles Page High School Head Wrestling Coach Kelly Smith was recognized by the Sand Springs Board of Education at their regular monthly meeting Monday evening. Smith led the 2016-2017 Sandites to their most successful season in program history.

"We are blessed with superstar teachers," said board-member Mike Mullins. "Kelly Smith is a wonderful wrestling coach. But he's not as good a wrestling coach as he is a teacher. It's a blessing to have you as part of the Sand Springs community and Sand Springs schools. We appreciate not just what you did but what you do."

Last year's Sandites won the State and Dual State Championships with five individual champions in their weight classes. He was recently named the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) Coach of the Year.

In addition to the Pacesetter Award, Smith also received a Coin of Excellence inscribed with "Think Right, Challenge Minds, Inspire Hearts."

"We don't give these out very often," said Mullins. "We give these out when somebody goes above and beyond. Kelly does that every day."

CPHS Basketball: Colt Savage scores 21, Sandites knock off No. 8 Bishop Kelley

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School boys basketball team won a thriller against 5A No. 8 Bishop Kelley Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House to kick off conference play in style.

Colt Savage scored the first two points of the game from the charity stripe, Zachary Coffman hit a three for the Comets, Cale Savage scored two, then the visitors went on an eight-point run to take the lead for the duration of the first period.

Matt Price made a three point play off a fouled layup to start the second quarter down 13-11, Coffman hit another three, then Price tacked on two more free throws. The eldest Savage hit back to back threes at the end of the half to take the lead 25-24 and Josh Minney rebounded the Comets' next shot and drained the clock for the halftime advantage.

The Sandites pushed their advantage to 33-29 in the third quarter, kicked off by a two point basket from Davon Richardson. Ryan Gendron and Anthony Bomprezzi tied it up at 27-27, but Richardson scored a pair of free throws and sent a rebound to Colt Savage for a dunk and 31-27 lead. Michael Pynn added two free throws, but Colt undid them with a two for the 33-29 lead to start the final stretch.

Coffman hit two from the charity stripe, Richardson scored two for the Sandites, then Cale Savage gave his team their biggest lead of the game at 38-31 with a three-point basket. The visitors went down swinging, however, fighting back for a 44-43 lead behind Bomprezzi and Garrett Salyer.

Colt Savage scored a pair of free throws for the lead and Richardson snagged a steal, but the Comets sent Savage to the line again and this time he missed and was rebounded by Gendron with seven seconds left. Both teams exchanged timeouts and the Comets took one last shot with a little more than a second remaining. The shooter went down in a pile of bodies, however, and the Sandites came up with the win.

Sand Springs will continue conference play Tuesday with a trip to No. 17 Sapulpa for a Highway 97 Rivalry matchup and the Chieftains' season-opener. Bishop Kelley will host unranked Bartlesville for the Bruins' season-opener.

The visiting Comets jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead against the defending Frontier Valley Champions after a steal and layup by sophomore Meaghan Cyr and a pair of free throws by Macy Craig. Grace Ritchie hit a layup for the Comets shortly before the buzzer and narrowed the game to 15-13.

Cyr scored the first basket of the second quarter, but the home team scored eight in a row for their first big lead. Destiny Johnson scored six, Kimi Presnell had four, and the Sandites were up 32-18 before Craig scored on a steal to end the half.

The Sandites put the game in the bag by winning the third quarter 21-7 and pushed their lead as far as 58-28 in the fourth before sending in the backups and allowing the Comets to cut the gap to a final score of 64-43.

Twelve Sandites got to see action, eight made their way in the scorebook, and Kersgieter led all scorers with twenty points and ten rebounds. Presnell added thirteen points and Johnson scored twelve. Two Lady Comets scored double digits: Craig led with thirteen followed by Cyr with eleven.

Sand Springs will return to action when they travel to No. 19 Sapulpa next Tuesday for a Highway 97 Rivalry matchup. The Comets will host No. 7 Bartlesville Tuesday for the Bruins' season opener.
