CPHS Basketball: No. 3 Lady Sandites top Sapulpa 60-48, Kersgieter scores 28
/The Class 6A No. 3 ranked Charles Page High School Girls' Basketball Team improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play with a thrilling 60-48 rivalry win at No. 18 Sapulpa (0-1). The Chieftains fought heartily in their season opener before falling in a parade of free throws in the final minutes.
The Lady Sandites jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on their hosts before Sapulpa finally got on the board and by the end of the first period they had doubled down on their rivals 22-11. The Chieftain defense stepped up big from there and held the visitors to ten points in the second quarter, trailing 32-20 at halftime.
The home team won the third quarter 15-13 despite a nine point performance by University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter and cut the deficit to 45-35 after four-straight points from Taylor Dement.
Sapulpa was in danger of winning the fourth quarter as well and cut the score as close as 50-43 before Destiny Johnson sent a crucial steal to Kimi Presnell who drew a foul. The junior starter made the first shot, missed the second, and Isabella Regalado rebounded it for the putback and double-digit lead. Kersgieter and Regalado combined for six more points to finish the evening out.
Kersgieter finished the night with a career-high 28 points, shattering her previous best of nineteen. She also had nine rebounds, three steals, and four assists. Regalado also broke double-digits with thirteen points and five rebounds.
The Lady Sandites will return to action this Thursday at the Bishop Kelley Invitational.
