In the eleventh game of the season, the Sandites came back from an 0-2 deficit to win 3-2 against the No. 5 team in Class 6A. Unfortunately, that was a once-in-a-season type of comeback. The No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (16-17) saw their season come to an end with a valiant last stand at No. 5 Stillwater (26-7) in the Regional Championship finals. Kansas State-commit Gloria Mutiri led her team with 18 kills, Madison Burris had 18 assists, Madison Ward and Kylie Taylor had six digs apiece, and Makenzie Ward had three aces.

The Sandites kept up with their foes well throughout the beginning of set one, drawing first blood with a kill from Cloe Campfield. Sophomore standout McKenzie Vilade gave her team a 2-1 lead with an ace, Mutiri retaliated with back-to-back kills with assists from Burris, then Lauren Phillips and Neely Holt combined for a block. Mutiri scored a kill, Orianna Clements retaliated, Burris scored on a tip, Clements retaliated, then the Pioneers went on a six point run for an insurmountable 11-6 lead. The Sandites tried to rally with five-straight late in the game to make it 18-15, but the home team outpaced then from there to win 25-18.

The Sandites jumped out to big lead early in game two, winning five straight rallies with a pair of aces from Makenzie Ward to make it 7-2. They held their lead till the Pioneers won six straight to take the lead at 17-15. Mutiri scored a kill and a block for an 18-17 lead, the Pioneers briefly tied it again, then Mutiri scored two straight kills and Makenzie Ward served an ace to make it 21-18. Ward's next serve went OB and Vilade killed to make it 21-20, Mutiri notched another point, then the home team went on a five point run for the win.

Sand Springs got out to a quick lead in game three with a four-point run capped by an ace from Madison Blaylock. The Pioneers responded with a six point streak starring Lauren Phillips, who hit three aces, one kill, and one assist for a 9-7 lead. Sand Springs tied it up at 14-14 with an ace fromTaylor but never managed to take the lead. They cut it to 19-22 before the Pioneers went on a three point run for the win.

CPHS Volleyball: No. 12 Sandites sweep Ponca 3-0 in Regional Playoff

The No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (16-16) easily handled Ponca City (13-14) with a 3-0 sweep in the first round of the Regional Championship Tuesday evening in Stillwater. The Sandites won sets of 25-13, 25-18, and 25-18, led by Kansas State-commit Gloria Mutiri with 25 kills and sophomore Madison Burris with 27 assists.

Ponca started hot with a kill and ace from Sunny Bastchellett, but the Lady Cat's next serve was out and the Sandites went on a ten-point run from there. Mutiri and Kenzie Bradshaw recorded blocks, Mutiri scored a pair of kills, and Kylie Taylor served an ace before Hannah Balzer notched her first kill of the night. Things were a little more back and forth from there and both teams ran up the service errors, but the Sandites maintained their lead. Ponca tried to rally with a kill and ace from Emily Lawrence, a block from Balzer and Hannah Lawson, and a kill from Riley Barrick, but Bradshaw got things back on track with a kill and Mutiri sealed the deal at 25-13.

The second set was far closer as neither team broke out with a definitive lead till late in the game. The Sandites started to pull ahead at 16-12, Ponca battled back with a kill from Barrick and an ace from Balzer, but Balzer's next serve was long and the Lady Cats rattled off three more errors to give Sand Springs a healthy 20-15 lead. Sand Springs committed an error of their own, but Ponca kept beating themselves and the Sandites prevailed with kills from Cloe Campfield and Mutirifor the 25-18 win and 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats scored first in game three with a kill from Bastchellett, but forfeited four straight points on errors before Bastchellett notched another. They tied it up shortly after, but Sand Springs jumped back out to a 9-5 lead with three kills and a block from Mutiri. The game tied again at 12-12 and the Wildcats took a brief lead before netting the Sandites three-straight points. Campfield, Bradshaw, and Makenna Cypert all got in on the scoring action in the final stretch and Cypert sealed the deal with an assist from Burris. 

The Lady Sandites will return to action immediately with a match against No. 5 Stillwater (25-7). The winner will advance to the State Tournament next week.

Sandite of the Week: Madison Burris leads No. 12 Sandites to Regionals at Stillwater

Charles Page High School sophomore setter Madison Burris was selected as our Sandite of the Week for her outstanding performance, not just over the past week, but for the season as a whole. 

Burris leads her team in assists with over 500 this season, averaging 5.28 per set. She's lethal with a tipped ball, scoring 0.6 kills per set and has an equal number of digs. She is third on the team in total kills, fourth in digs, and fifth in aces. Together with Gloria Mutiri, she is one of only two players on the team to play every single set this season. 

The No. 12 ranked Sandites (15-16) won all three of their matches last week, 3-2 against No. 18 Muskogee and 3-0 against both Sapulpa and Ponca City. Burris tied her career-high performance of 29 assists in only three sets against Ponca City and recorded 20 in a rivalry win against the Chieftains. 

The Sandites received a Tuesday morning police escort to Stillwater for the Regional Tournament, where they will have a rematch with Ponca City (13-13) in the semifinals at 6:00 p.m. If they win against Ponca they will advance to the Championship round against either No. 5 Stillwater (24-7) or No. 19 Enid (14-12) to battle for the ticket to the State Tournament. Stillwater is riding a seven-match win streak, including a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-11, 25-7) of the Sandites at the Stillwater Invitational two weekends ago. The Sandites have won their last four-straight matches.

CPHS Football dominates Ponca City 42-7, Payton Scott scores 5 touchdowns

The No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School football team (4-2 overall, 2-0 district) won its fourth-straight game of the season 42-7 against No. 14 Ponca City (1-5, 1-1) Friday night at Sullins Stadium. The Sandites put themselves one step closer to the post-season by winning their sixth-straight meeting with the Wildcats.

The Sandites were nearly flawless in the opening minutes. Defensively they gave up 27 yards before Braden Askew picked off the second pass of the night and returned it 20 yards to the Sandite 45. From there Payton Scott marched the whole distance in only six carries and scored from three yards out. Jaden Weiser kicked the extra point and the Sandites were up 7-0 right out the gate.

Ponca’s next drive amounted to nine yards and a punt, and the Sandites easily replicated their prior success. Just like last time, it was Scott with the three-yard touchdown run, but this time he had help. Caden Pennington connected with Garrett McCallie from 33 yards out to set up the scoring play.

The home team made it 25 yards to midfield before punting at the beginning of the second quarter. The Sandites saw their first unsuccessful drive end in a fumble at the Ponca 30, recovered by Lane Bristow, but the Wildcats were once again unable to capitalize.

The home team marched as far as the Sandite 29 before Mason Shipman broke up an endzone pass attempt for a turnover on downs. Payton Scott needed just a single snap to take the ball 71 yards to the house. Weiser’s PAT made it 21-0 where it remained till halftime.

Sand Springs picked up right where they left off, marching 65 yards in five plays with a 34-yard touchdown run from Scott on the opening drive of the third quarter.

One of Ponca’s most promising drives fell short as Bryson Denton ended their 58 yard march with an endzone breakup. The offense went right back to work with an 82 yard drive and one-yard Scott touchdown to tie his career-best five scores in a single game.

The fourth quarter was a different game as the Wildcat first team took on the Sandite backups. The Sandites punted on their first possession, but on their next drive sophomore backup quarterback Braden Foster connected with Daren Hawkins for a 45-yard touchdown on the first pass attempt of his varsity career. Weiser finished a perfect six-for-six for a 42-0 lead.

The Wildcats finally averted the shutout with 3:17 left to play, marching 80 yards and scoring on an eight-yard keeper from Justin Andrews. Josh Fairbanks kicked the final point of the game and sophomore running back Seth Jones finished out the night with a series of handoffs.

The Sandites will return to action next Friday for Homecoming after a four-week stretch on the road. They will host the talented No. 4 Muskogee Roughers (2-4, 1-2) who most recently fell 42-21 to No. 1 Booker T. Washington(6-1, 3-0).

CPHS Softball: Sandites win third-straight Regional Championship

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (23-7) is headed to the OSSAA 6A State Championship for the third-straight year after winning a 3-0 shutout against the Bixby Spartans (28-10) Friday afternoon in a home Regional Tournament.

The Lady Sandites started the tournament Tuesday with wins over Enid and Bixby. While the Sandites trounced Enid (4-26) 14-4, the Spartans rolled over Putnam City North (21-14) 15-5. After Sand Springs edged the Spartans out 3-1 on day one, Bixby had to wait through two days of rain delays before beating Putnam 13-9 in the consolation bracket to earn a rematch with the Sandites. It was a long and scoreless day before the Sandites finally got on the scoreboard with a home run from Sabrina Usher, but that was the only run they needed.

The State Tournament will be held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City from October 12th through 14th. It is a single-elimination three-round tournament. Last year the Sandites fell 10-2 to Mustang in the first round, but in 2015 they made it to the Championship Finals before falling 4-3 to Choctaw. 

CPHS 14 Enid 4

In the win against Enid, the Sandites jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with runs from Usher and Kimi Presnell. The Pacers scored one run in the top of the second but Elizabeth Luttrell hit a three-run homer in the same inning. Makenna Skaggs walked in on loaded bases for the 6-1 lead. 

Enid battled back with four-straight hits in the third to cut the deficit to 6-3, but Drew Hawkins and Luttrell added another pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Luttrell batted in Jacie Taber and Hawkins in the fourth, Enid scored their final run in the fifth, then Taber, Clemons, and Makenna and Kinsey Skaggs, pushed the lead to double-digits for a run-rule victory.

Madelyn Blair (6-3 season, 19-6 career) got the win on the mound with four strikeouts, one walk, and eight hits.

CPHS 3 Bixby 1

In the second round of Regionals, the Spartans scored their only run in the top of the second thanks to a rough start by Taber (16-2, 29-9). The junior Northern Iowa-commit walked four batters and gave up a free run before finding her mojo. She finished the game with eight walks, seven strikeouts, and only two hits. 

The Sandites trailed till the bottom of the fifth when Cameron Clemons scored on a hit from Presnell to tie the game. Taber scored the go-ahead runs with a homer to bring in Kinsey Skaggs in the sixth inning.

Presnell started things off with a leadoff double but was caught stealing third and Makenna Skaggs struck out. Usher singled on a full count, Jensen Arnold walked, and Taber reached on an error to load the bases but they were left stranded as Horn went down swinging.

Taber walked the first batter then put out the second on a sacrifice bunt. Usher caught a pop fly for the second out, Taber walked another, then recorded her first strikeout of the afternoon to save the inning.

Meredith Iden struck out the side in the second inning and quickly brought her team in for another offensive. Taber gave up one hit in the bottom of the inning but caught a line drive and struck out one to end the inning.

Two-for-two, Presnell started the third inning with yet another leadoff double. This time she took third on a sacrifice bunt but was left stranded after the next two batters grounded out. The defensive battle continued with a strikeout and a pair of pop flys to end the third scoreless.

The Sandite pitcher started the the fourth with a single and courtesy runner Drew Hawkins took second on a bunt from Horn but was left stranded after Clemons hit a pop fly to second and Blair lined out to short. Iden was on the receiving end of a strikeout in the bottom of the inning. The next batter flied out to Skaggs then Presnell sent a ground ball to Luttrell on first to bring in the fifth.

With one out on the board, Presnell was swinging for the fence and bounced one off the wall in foul territory. Her next hit was a grounder to third for a put out at first and it came down to Skaggs to keep the drive alive. She went the way of Presnell, however, and the Spartans came in again.

Taber hit the first batter with the pitch, but the runner was picked off by Usher at first base. Blair fielded a ground ball for out number two but the Spartans hit a double to put the Sandites on their toes. Taber wasn't phased and casually tossed a ground ball to first for the third out.

Usher got the Sandites on the board with a solo homer to start the sixth and Arnold followed up with a line drive single into right field. Kinsey Skaggs took over on first but was left stranded as Bixby came in to try and even things up.

Taber struck out two and Makenna Skaggs caught out the third and it was down to the final stretch. Blair hit a leadoff single but courtesy runner Hawkins was put out on a fielder's choice. Presnell advanced Luttrell with a single, then Makenna Skaggs hit a single and all three runners advanced on the throw. Luttrell made it a two run game, then Usher hit a sacrifice fly to score Presnell. Skaggs narrowly beat the ball the third with a dive, but was left stranded on a fly out.

It was make or break for the Spartans who needed four runs for the win or three to force extra innings. Makenna Skaggs caught a fly ball for the first out and Taber struck out the next two to punch their ticket to Statesville.

The Sandite pitcher ended the game with three hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts.

No. 8 Sand Springs looks to win sixth-straight over No. 14 Ponca City Wildcats

The No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School Sandites (3-2, 1-0) are headed to No. 14 Ponca City this Friday to take on the Po-Hi Wildcats (1-4, 1-0). Both teams are coming off wins, and both need to win this game to have a good shot at the playoffs.

Both Sand Springs and Ponca are coming off wins...

Ponca City started districts last weekend with their first win of the season. While Sand Springs came out on top of a 26-21 non-district thriller in Yukon (2-3), the Wildcats were winning a 14-12 upset against Bartlesville (0-5, 0-2).

Junior quarterback Caden Pennington had his best passing percentage of the season, completing six of seven throws for 58 yards. For the first time this year he didn't have an interception. He also carried eight times for 33 yards with one touchdown and a two-point conversion. Payton Scott bore most of the workload per usual, running the ball 33 times for 185 yards and three touchdowns to surpass the 1,000 yard mark for the season.

The special teams struggled, giving up two blocked point-after kicks and a blocked field goal, but the defense was sturdy and paved the way for victory with a fumble recovery and two goal-line stands as time ran out.

Ponca City came into their matchup with Bartlesville as the sixteen-point underdogs and the bottom ranked team in Class 6A-II.  Surprising everybody, they held a 14-0 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Bruins battled back with two touchdowns, but missed an extra point and failed a two-point conversion. 

Ponca was equally reliant on their defense for the win, recovering two fumbles and an interception in the third quarter, one of which led to their second touchdown. 

Double-threat quarterback Justin Andrews passed 8-18-138-0 with one touchdown and ran the ball 25 times for 125 yards and the other touchdown. 

Sand Springs has won its last five encounters with Ponca...

The Sandites have won their last five encounters with the Wildcats, all by healthy margins. Last season the Sandites won 56-35 and the last time the Wildcats won was 35-31 in 2011 when the Sandites went 3-7. The Sandites are 9-1 against Ponca in the decade that Dustin Kinard has led the program.

Josh Allen is in his sixth year at Ponca City and has yet to notch a win against the Sandites. Kinard is 58-56 with his program while Allen is 11-43 in Ponca. However, the Wildcats' win against Bartlesville was also their first in six years against the Bruins. 

Sand Springs has a 24-18-1 record against the Wildcats overall. Sand Springs High School was 1-1-1 against Ponca City, and the Sandites are 23-17 since the town desegregated and build Charles Page. 

Sand Springs has two five-win streaks against the Wildcats, but Ponca has the longest win streak at six-straight from 2000-2005 when the Sandites went a cumulative 13-47. Ponca's biggest win was 48-2 in 2003 and they have shut out the Sandites only once, 41-0 in 2004. The Sandites have shut out the Wildcats four times and their biggest win was 57-7 in 2013. 

The two teams first met in 1952 in the Class A Playoffs. The Sandites were 8-1-1 under Head Coach Cecil Hankins going into the Thanksgiving Day Regional and were defeated 27-9. Ponca went on to get trounced 41-7 by the eventual State Champions from Ada in the Area playoff. In 1953 the two teams tied 7-7 and in 1954 quarterback Jerry Adair led the Sandites back from a 20-0 deficit to a 21-20 victory.

The two teams met again in 1961 and the Wildcats prevailed 35-6 over Travis Rhodes's Sandites. They didn't meet again until 1978 and they have played all 39 seasons since then. Sandite Pride has picked the Sandites as a 20-point favorite over Ponca. 

Looking past Ponca...

The Sandites are halfway through the regular season, but just getting started in the most important stretch. With Sapulpa out of the way, the Sandites will likely only need two more wins to make the playoffs. If they play to the standard they've set in the past three games, they should get those wins against Ponca City and Bartlesville. Nothing is ever certain, however, and an off night with too many mistakes could easily put the underdogs ahead. 

Two games that don't have a clear favorite are home games against Muskogee (2-3, 1-1) and Bixby (2-3, 1-0). Neither team is playing to the level they did last year, but both have coaches with State Championship wins on their resume. Bixby had a rough 2-3 start last year too, but still pulled together during Districts and ended up with a third-straight gold ball. Muskogee had their best season in a decade at 9-2 before falling in the semifinals. 

Sand Springs beat Muskogee last year, but like Muskogee and Bixby, they had an experienced senior-laden team last year. The Sandites lost two games to Bixby last year, once on the road and once in the playoffs. The year before that they lost to Bixby in the State Title game, but shut the Spartans out 20-0 in the last home game of the season. 

Likely the most difficult opponent the Sandites will face in their district is No. 1 Booker T. Washington (4-1, 1-0). In 2015 the Sandites split games with Booker T., losing in the regular season but winning in the playoffs. Last season the Sandites lost a close 17-12 regular season home game.
