CPHS Softball: Lady Sandites win back-to-back shutouts at RSU festival

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (4-1 overall, 1-0 district) won back-to-back shutouts Friday in Claremore, defeating Wyandotte (6-3) and Purcell (1-3) by a combined 14-0 at Rogers State University. 

Madelyn Blair (1-1 season, 14-3 career) pitched the 6-0 shutout against Wyandotte, recording five strikeouts against three hits and three walks. 

The Sandites averted a hazardous first inning after giving up a walk and a single. Blair picked up two strikeouts and Kimi Presnell caught a pop up strand the runners. Felicity Horn was first to score, reaching first with a walk, second on a sacrifice from Makenna Skaggs, and scoring on a ground ball from Jacie Taber.

The scoreboard took a nap till the bottom of the fourth when Rachel Jones came in on an error and Elizabeth Luttrell singled in Presnell. In the next inning Taber scored on a sacrifice fly from Jensen Arnold, Presnell scored on a single from Cameron Clemons, and Clemons scored on a single from Madison Lee.

Sand Springs jumped out to a quick lead against Purcell. Taber (3-0, 16-7) pitched two strikeouts in the first inning and stranded two in the second with a third strikeout. In the bottom of the second Presnell doubled to bring in Sabrina Usher, then scored on a groundball from Clemons. In the third inning Blair doubled to score Horn

The Sandites put the game away in the fourth inning. Usher scored on an error, Presnell scored on a passed ball, and Jones scored on a single from Luttrell. Horn hit a double, Luttrell scored on an error, then Horn came home on a single from Taber.

Taber struck out the side in the top of the fifth to wrap things up with eight strikeouts against only two hits and two walks. The University of Northern Iowa committed junior remains undefeated on the mound this season. 

The Lady Sandites will return to action Tuesday with a double-header against Putnam City North in their home stadium at 5:00 p.m.

CPHS Softball: Cameron Clemons homers in 6-1 victory at Ponca City

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (2-1 overall, 1-0 district) is off to a solid start in the fall fast-pitch season, winning two of their first three games, including a district battle with Ponca City.

The Lady Sandites traveled to the Claremore festival last Tuesday for back-to-back games against Claremore (3-1) and Oologah-Talala (2-2). They won their first game 3-2 over Oologah, but fell 4-3 to the host team.

University of Northern Iowa commit Jacie Taber (2-0 season, 15-7 career) got the win on the mound against Oologah, starting the game off strong with two strikeouts in the first inning. Felicity Horn landed the first hit of the game, but was left stranded on second in the bottom of the first.

Kenzie Chacon got the Mustangs on the board in the top of the second, but Cameron Clemons doubled in the bottom of the inning to score Sabrina Usher and tie the game. The scoreboard was quiet till the top of the sixth when Oologah scored a solo homer, and the game came down to the wire for Sand Springs.

In the bottom of the seventh Kimi Presnell singled and reached third on an error that sent Clemons to first. Presnell tied it up on a wild throw and Luttrell scored the walk off victory with a double to center field.

Taber finished the game with nine strikeouts against four walks, while the Sandites out hit their foes seven to two. 

Madelyn Blair (0-1, 13-3) handled the pitching in the loss to Claremore, giving up seven hits and three walks against four strikeouts. Sand Springs jumped out to an early lead, but a late surge from the host team was too much to defend against.

Taber scored on a double from Blair in the first inning, Luttrell scored on an error in the fifth, and Madison Lee came home on a single from Luttrell in the sixth for the 3-0 lead.

Things fell apart in the bottom of the seventh, however, thanks to an error, a passed ball, and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Kailea Wheatley scored a run with a single and Kayla Shisler cleared the bases with a double for the Zebra victory.

After the Broken Arrow tournament was rained out this past weekend, the Sandites got a full week off between games and returned to the win column with their district debut at Ponca City Tuesday evening.

Sand Springs out-pitched, out-fielded, and out-hit their opponents for a solid 6-1 victory. Taber remained undefeated on the mound, pitching eight strikeouts with five walks and three hits.

Horn drew first blood in the top of the first, taking a walk, reaching third on an error, and scoring on a groundball from Blair. Clemons scored the first Sandite home run of the season in the second inning.

Ponca made their way onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as Kaylee Meyer scored on an error, but Sand Springs buried the home team over the next two innings.

Clemons recorded another RBI with a single to score Usher and showed off her speed by making third on throws before the play ended. She crossed home plate soon after on a sacrifice fly from Jensen Arnold.

Kaylie Murry singled in the bottom of the sixth, but any hope at a comeback was thwarted as Mady Angle struck out and Horn hooked a line drive to to Luttrell at first base to put out courtesy runner Camryn Suggs for the double play.

In the top of the seventh Horn drew another walk and scored on a double from Makenna Skaggs. Skaggs tagged up on a fly ball from Taber to notch the final run of the game.

Meyer took one more base for Ponca in the bottom of the seventh, but was outed on a fielders choice between two strikeouts for the Sandite victory.

The Lady Sandites will return to action this Friday at the Rogers State Festival in Claremore.

CPHS Volleyball: Mutiri scores 22 kills in 3-1 loss at Union

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (2-1) suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of a Frontier Valley Conference foe. The Union Redskins (2-0) avenged their last seasons's loss to remain undefeated in the new year.

The Lady Sandites started out hot, working up a 6-3 lead in the first set before the Redskins surged ahead to 9-7. Chelsea Neely scored a kill and Cloe Campfield served an ace for a brief 10-9 lead, but the home team stuck with their foes and won four-straight rallies for a 17-13 advantage. Sand Springs took the penultimate lead at 20-19 after winning four straight rallies including an ace from MaKenzie Ward. Union reclaimed the lead for a single rally, but Sand Springs won four more in a row and wrapped things up at 25-22 with a set from MaKenzie Ward and a kill from Gloria Mutiri.

The second set was a constant battle. The game saw five tied scores and four lead changes, with the home team taking charge at 13-12 as the Sandites were caught out of rotation. Union took a seven-point lead late in the game, but Sand Springs battled back with four straight rally wins including an ace from Madison Burris. The Lady Sandites tried to get back in the game, but the Redskins hung on for a 25-20 victory to tie the match.

Union took a 3-0 lead in set three, Sand Springs won the next five rallies, then Union won the four after that to take the lead for the duration. Sand Springs pulled as close as 16-14 thanks to kills from Makenna Cypert and Mutiri with an ace from Madison Ward. Union rapidly pulled away from there, however, for a 25-16 win.

It was make or break for Sand Springs in the fourth set. Mutiri struck first with an assist from Raylynn Mong and quickly worked up a 4-1 lead, but the Redskins were on a roll and won the next six rallies. The lead changed twice more, but Union took the final lead at 12-11 and rapidly surged ahead for the 25-15 lead. 

Mutiri, an Ohio State University commit, led all scorers with 22 kills. Burris recorded eleven assists, followed by MaKenzie Ward with seven. Mutiri, Madison Ward, and Kyle Taylor each had eleven digs apiece. 

The Lady Sandites will return to Union on Friday for a tournament at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center (UMAC) at 6836 South Mingo Road in Tulsa. 

CPHS Volleyball: Lady Sandites sweep Booker T. Washington 3-0

While the halls of Charles Page High School may not be clamoring with students quite yet, school is officially in session for the varsity volleyball team. The Lady Sandites have been schooling their competition for the past week, sweeping Bartlesville (0-1) and Booker T. Washington (0-1) in straight sets to start the season 2-0.

On Thursday the Sandites hosted their first match on the new Ed Dubie Field House floor and christened it by outscoring their opponents 75-39 over the three set match. 

The first set wasn't even close at 25-12. Cloe Campfield and Ohio State-commit Gloria Mutiri scored a pair of kills each, Mutiri added a pair of blocks, Vanessa Wyrick scored a kill, and Madison Ward served up an ace.

It took the Sandites a little while to find their rhythm in the second set, but once they did they were unstoppable. The game tied six times before Sand Springs took the lead once and for all. Mutiri scored a pair of kills with assists from Madison Burris, MaKenzie Ward served an ace, and Mutiri added another block to pull ahead to 16-12. The teams traded punches from there before Sand Springs won the last seven-straight rallies for the 25-15 victory.

In the third and final set the Sandites took a 13-1 lead before Cami Cole scored the first Hornet kill. Washington went on a five-point run from there with a pair of Sandite errors and a pair of aces from Laydyn Turner, but ultimately Sand Springs pulled ahead once again and secured another 25-12 victory capped by a kill from Cloe Campfield.

The Lady Sandites will travel to Union (1-0) next Monday at 6:00 p.m. in a Frontier Valley Conference match-up. Last year the Sandites came out on top of a competitive 3-2 victory with four of the five sets being decided by four points or less. Union started the season Tuesday with a 3-0 victory against Broken Arrow (0-1), defeating the Tigers 25-11, 25-23, and 25-11.

Charles Page High School boasts one of the premier athletic programs in the State of Oklahoma. Fall athletics include Cross Country, Football, Fast Pitch Softball, and Volleyball.

Lady Sandite Volleyball went 24-14 last year, reaching the number thirteen ranking in Class 6A before being eliminated in the playoffs by No. 4 Edmond Santa Fe. Head Coach Janna Green was named Frontier Valley Conference Coach of the Year, junior Gloria Mutiri committed to Ohio State University, and Lee Leslie signed with Oklahoma Wesleyan University.

The Sandite Football team went 7-5 last season and attained the number one ranking in Class 6A-II before being defeated in the semifinals by the defending and eventual State Champions from Bixby. The Sandites won a 26-25 upset over then top-ranked Muskogee with a two-point conversion that made the EPSN SportsCenter number one play. Four seniors went on to play collegiate ball and three received OCA All-Star accolades.

The Lady Sandite Softball team went 30-9, placed second in the district, made the State quarterfinals and won the 6A Academic State Championship. Sydney Pennington signed with Oklahoma State University, Jessica Collins signed with Connors State College, and both made the All-State team. 

The Boys' Cross Country team won the Kiefer meet and placed second at Sapulpa. The Girls placed first at Kiefer, second at Sapulpa, and fourth in the conference. The girls team qualified for State, Aden Baughman qualified individually, and Cheyenne Walden won her fourth State Championship. Walden signed with Oklahoma State University and Alexis Davis signed with Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (1-0) kicked off the season with a bang Tuesday evening in Bartlesville, sweeping the Lady Bruins 3-0 in a Frontier Valley Conference matchup.

The first set was a back and forth affair, with neither team pulling ahead in the first half. The Bruins struck first with an ace, but followed it up with a service error. The game tied eleven times before the Sandites took the lead once and for all at 13-12 with an ace from Kylie Taylor. Sand Springs led by as much as 22-16 before the home team began to rally, but ultimately the visitors secured the win 25-20 with a kill from Vanessa Wyrick. 

Bartlesville took a quick 4-1 lead in the second set behind kills from Sarah Covell and LaRissa Johnson, but the Sandites didn't stay down for long. Gloria Mutiri scored on a set from Burris, Mackenzie Ward served an ace, and a two-touch error tied it up.

Covell took the lead back one last time, but Sand Springs surged ahead and never looked back. They led by as much as 24-16 and let the Bruins back in the game briefly before pulling out the 25-20 victory with a set from MaKenzie Ward and a kill from Mutiri.

The third set wasn't even close as the Lady Sandites jumped out to a 5-1 lead with a pair of kills from Mutiri and blocks from Mutiri and Wyrick. At one point the girls went on a seven-straight streak, ultimately prevailing 25-11.

Mutiri, a senior committed to Ohio State University, led all scorers with ten kills, six blocks, and an ace. Covell was the top hitter for Bartlesville with eight kills.

The Lady Sandites will host their first home game Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against the Booker T. Washington Hornets. This will be the first game on the new court at the Ed Dubie Field House.
