Sandite of the Week: Daton Fix qualifies for World Championship in Finland

Charles Page High School Class of 2017 graduate and incoming Oklahoma State University freshman Daton Fix defeated Arizona State freshman Brandon Courtney at the Junior World Team Trials in Lincoln, Nebraska this weekend.

Courtney finished his senior season ranked 11th in the country at 126 pounds according to Flowrestling. He was a four-time Arizona State finalist, three-time State Champion, and the 2015 USAW Junior Freestyle National Champion.

Fix is ranked first in the country both at 132 pounds and pound-for-pound. He finished his high school career as a four-time undefeated State Champion with multiple UWW and USAW National Championships.

Fix has made the World Team the past three seasons. In 2016 he took Bronze at Junior Worlds in France, in 2015 he took Bronze at Cadet Worlds in Bosnia, and in 2014 he placed tenth at Cadet Worlds in Slovakia. He also won Silver at the Youth Olympic Games in China in 2014.

As the defending World Team member, Fix got a bye through the World Team Trials bracket and met Courtney in a best-of-three series in the finals.

Courtney had to win three matches to make his way to the finals. He defeated Buffalo freshman Derek Spann 12-2, Nebraska-committed and undefeated high school senior Alex Thomsen 7-5, and Indiana freshman Liam Cronin 10-0.

Courtney had an impressive trip to the finals, but once he got there he was quickly shut down by Fix. In the first match the Sandite handily rolled to a 12-0 tech fall. In the second match Courtney managed to score a four-point throw, but Fix still prevailed with another tech fall at 15-4 to secure his place on the world team.

The Junior World Championship will be held August 21-26 in Tampere, Finland.

Fix was one of five State Champions on the 2017 Sand Springs Wrestling Team that won both the State and Dual State Championships this year. Click here to view our commemorative magazine.

Sand Springs wrestlers compete at Dual Nationals, place 4th with Team Oklahoma

Four Sand Springs junior high students represented Oklahoma this past weekend at the Schoolboy National Duals in Indianapolis, Indiana. Oklahoma sent two teams to the tournament and competed in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman.

Rhett Peak (9-7 GR) and Christian Forbes (4-5 GR) also represented Sand Springs and went 2-5 and 1-1, respectively.

They placed fourth in Freestyle with a 5-2 record, falling to Illinois and Washington. Glass (16-1 FS) went 5-1, suffering his first freestyle loss of the season. Oklahoma Blue placed 27th in Greco with a 3-4 record. White (1-1 GR) split his first two Greco matches of the season. They placed 20th in Freestyle with a 5-4 record. Peak (15-9 FS) went 3-3 with each of his wins coming via tech fall.

Georgia Blue took first place in Greco Roman and second in Freestyle, while Illinois won Freestyle and placed third in Greco.

The Cadet National Duals will be held this week in York, Pennsylvania. Incoming CPHS freshman Carter Young will represent the Sandites on Team Oklahoma at the 100 pound weight class.

CPHS Basketball: Holly Kersgieter receives offer from Oklahoma State University

Charles Page High School junior Holly Kersgieter recently received her first college athletics offer from a NCAA Division I school. The 5'10 guard from the Class of 2019 was offered by Oklahoma State University.

Kersgieter was part of an undefeated eighth-grade team that claimed the Frontier Valley Conference Championship before arriving on the varsity squad as a starting freshman.

In the 2015-2016 season Kersgieter was the number four scorer for a Lady Sandite squad that went 17-9. She scored 166 points for a 6.38 average.

This past season was one of the best in school history as the girls went 24-2 for a Bishop Kelley Tournament Championship and FVC Conference Championship before falling in the State Tournament Semi-Finals.

Kersgieter scored 271 points for an average of 10.42 per game. She was second on the team in scoring, second in 3-point percentage, third in total rebounds, second in assists, first in steals, and second in blocks. She led her team in scoring for nine games and posted a career-best 19 points against Jenks.

She was named the FVC Defensive Player of the Year and made the FVC All-Conference Second Team and Bishop Kelley All-Tournament Team.

The Oklahoma State Cowgirls went 17-15 this past season and finished seventh in the Big 12 Conference.

Three Sand Springs fishing teams qualify for National Championship

Three fishing teams from Charles Page High School will advance to the Bass Nation High School National Championship after their successful finishes to the regular season this past weekend at Lake Eufala.

This was the second year that Sand Springs participated in the Oklahoma Bass Nation (OBN) trail and the club doubled in size from last season. The OBN trail consists of five tournaments that count for points in State standings. The five top teams from the trail advance to Nationals, as do the top two teams from the State Tournament.

Fishing is not recognized as an official sport by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) and is not funded by the State or the schools. Each team is responsible for finding their own sponsors, providing their own boat and equipment, and finding their own coach/captain—which is usually a parent. The student anglers are not allowed to pilot their boats, and the captains are not allowed to physically assist in any way but piloting.

Noah Daczewitz and Hunter Hilger placed 25th on Saturday with four fish totaling 6.38 pounds. They fared even better on Sunday when they totaled 10.36 pounds from four fish for eighth place. This was their third top-ten finish of the season. They finished the season fourth in the standings with 364 points to advance to Nationals.

John Miller and Caden Pennington placed seventh on Saturday with four fish totaling 9.94 pounds for their best finish on the trail this season. They previously placed second at the OBN State Championship, but that tournament doesn’t count towards trail points. They were successful on Sunday as well, hauling in a 9.08 pound catch for tenth place and their fourth top-ten finish of the season. They finished fifth in the season standings with 359 points. Because their runner-up finish at State qualified them for Nationals, the fifth qualifying spot from the trail went to Seth Kearns and Cole Scott.

Kearns and Scott took first place on Saturday with four fish totaling 13.11 pounds. Their largest weighed in at 4.12 pounds and was the fifth-largest catch of the day. They failed to place top-ten for only the second time this season on Sunday, but still finished 30th with two fish weighing 5.41 pounds. They finished the season sixth in the standings with 354 points.

Jerret Haley and Corbin Williams landed a 2.27 pound fish for 51st place on Saturday, and improved to 36th place on Sunday with two catches weighing 5.12 pounds. They finished the year 43rd with 205 points.

Kyle and Kale Hilligoss had their best finish of the season on Sunday, netting four fish for sixth place and 10.46 pounds. They finished the season fourteenth with 329 points.

Braden Millican and Ty Steelman placed 30th on Saturday with three fish totaling 4.9 pounds. They were unable to compete at the Sunday event, however, as Millican had to leave for football camp at Pittsburg State University. Between football and baseball conflicts, Team 3 only managed to fish a pair of tournaments this year, but still finished 59th overall with 156 points.

Austin Smith and Joe Nelson were right behind the Hilligosses on Saturday in 52nd place with a 2.09 pound catch. They finished the year in 75th with 118 points.

89 boats took to the water Saturday and hauled in a total of 152 fish. 26 teams returned empty-handed. Sunday’s boaters fared about the same as 87 teams brought in 151 fish with 28 failing to land a catch.

The 2017 Costa Bassmaster National Championship will be held on Kentucky Lake in Tennessee on June 19th. Kentucky Lake straddles the Tennessee-Kentucky border and the boaters will launch from Paris Landing State Park. The final day’s weigh-in and award presentation will be held in downtown Paris.
