2X Sandite of the Week: Aden Baughman wins Regional Championship with fastest time in State

Charles Page High School sophomore Aden Baughman was selected as Sandite of the Week for the second time this season for his remarkable performance at last weekend's Regional Championship track meet.

The young star has transformed over the past year from a solid competitor to a State contender, winning the 800 meter run at five out of six track meets this season. He came in Runner-Up at the Frontier Valley Conference meet two weeks ago, but knocked more than two seconds off his time at Regionals.

Not only was his 1:55.42 performance the best of his career, but it was the best time of the year for any Oklahoma high school athlete at any classification. According to Assistant Coach Rodney Echohawk, Baughman's time is the second-best in school history. 

Baughman is also a State contender in the 1600 where he qualified with a runner-up performance and a career-best 4:30.42. He hasn't won the 1600 yet, but he has come in runner-up at three-straight meets, and has improved on his personal record all three times.

Baughman also qualified for State as part of the 3200 relay team alongside Jacob Garbey, Jaelyn Jackson, and Ian Baustert. They took third place in 8:32.64.

CPHS Golf: Carson Griggs comes in Runner-Up at 6A State Tournament

Charles Page High School junior Carson Griggs made his third trip to the OSSAA 6A State Tournament this week and had his best performance yet, finishing Runner-Up by two strokes.

The two-day three-round tournament was held at the Golf Club of Edmond instead of Stillwater's Karsten Creek due to flooding at the usual host site.

Griggs played excellently all three rounds, but his best performance was on day one when he shot three strokes under par. His 67-stroke finish was the second-best performance of any golfer during any round. State Champion Austin Eckroat had the best single-round score at 66.

Griggs sat in second place after the first round, then shot a 71 in round two and dropped to third place at the end of day one behind Eckroat and Brock Polhill, both of Edmond North. On day two he made up for lost ground with the best performance of the day, shooting a 68. He jumped five strokes ahead of Polhill, but was still two short of Eckroat, who scored 68 in round two and 70 in round three. 

72 athletes competed at the event, with an average score of 241. Griggs finished with a total score of 206. Griggs previously tied for nineteenth place as a freshman and twentieth place as a sophomore with scores of 238 and 242 at Karsten Creek. Edmond North won their fifteenth State Championship as a team. The Huskies hold the record for most State Championships won by any school at any classification in Oklahoma.

CPHS Track: Sandites win four Regional Championships, qualify 10 for State

The Charles Page High School Track and Field teams competed at the 6A Regional Championship in Claremore this weekend and had one of their best performances in years, qualifying ten individuals for the State Championship. Three Sandites claimed first-place titles. The girls finished in fifth place while the boys placed sixth overall. 

Oklahoma State University-signed senior Cheyenne Walden won her ninth and tenth Regional Championships in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. She won both last year as well, and has won the 3200 all four years of her career. She ran the 1600 in 5:16.18 and the 3200 in 11:06.11. She had a six-second margin of victory in the 1600 and a 56-second margin of victory in the 3200. 

Sophomore Aden Baughman won his first Regional Championship with a 1:55.42 personal-record performance in the 800 meter run. Not only was it his personal best, but it was the best performance of any Oklahoma boy this season at any classification. He also broke his PR in the 1600 with a runner-up performance of 4:30.42. 

Senior Colton Washington won his first Regional Championship in the long jump with a performance of 21'10.00", the second best of his career. He beat the runner-up by more than three inches. 

Tiqvah Soap qualified for State with a fourth place performance in the 800. She finished in 2:31.79, just half a second behind her personal-record. She placed eighth in the 1600 with a PR 5:54.30.

Walden, Soap, Alexis Davis, and Elizabeth Watts qualified for State with a third-place performance in the 3200 relay. They finished in 10:10.76 for their best performance of the year.

Baughman, Jaelyn Jackson, Ian Baustert, and Jacob Garbey qualified for State with a third-place performance in the 3200 relay. They finished in 8:32.64.

Junior Kris Edwards qualified for State with a fourth-place finish in shot put with a distance of 46'09.00". 

Sophomore Joel Mackey took sixth place in the 100 dash preliminaries in 11.54, and improved to fifth place in 11.49 in the finals. In the 200 he placed fifth in the prelims with a time of 23.04, followed by a 23.37 sixth place performance in the finals. 

Senior Mikey Burns took fifth place in the 110 hurdles in both the prelims and the finals. He set back-to-back PR's of 16.71 and 16.56. Freshman Alex Newport PR'ed in both hurdle events, finishing the 110 in 20.90 and the 300 in 50.97.

Junior Madelynn Adams placed ninth in the 200 dash with a PR 29.46 performance. Danny Murray placed ninth in the 3200 run with a PR 11:13.65 performance. 

Payton Scott, Kameron Carpenter, Ben Nortey, and Joel Mackey ran the 400 relay in 44.87 for fifth place.

Madelynn Adams, Kaileeann Worthington, Stephanie Genn, and Tiqvah Soap ran the 1600 relay in 4:35.25 for fourth place and their best performance of the season.

Sand Springs wrestling club takes second at East Regional with twelve champions

Balance Johnson won the Regional Championship for both Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling this weekend in Sapulpa. 

Twenty four members of the Sand Springs Team Big wrestling club competed at the Oklahoma USA East Regional Tournament this weekend in Sapulpa. Twelve of them earned first-place medals and helped their team to a second-place finish overall.

Promised Johnson, Clayton Giddens, Abraham Flores, Christian Forbes, Michael Ritchey, Jaylen Hernandez, Rhett Peak, Ethan White, and Bryce Fisher all brought home first-place medals in one style, while Balance Johnson, Justin Vaughn, and Cole Brooks won their brackets in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.

Team Big placed second in Novice Freestyle, second in Novice Greco, sixth in Intermediate Freestyle, third in Intermediate Greco, first in Schoolboy Freestyle, third in Schoolboy Greco, eighteenth in Cadet Freestyle, sixth in Junior Freestyle, and second overall. They were runners-up to Threestyle Wrestling out of Catoosa, who entered twelve more competitors than the Sand Springs team.

Junior

Charles Page High School senior State Qualifier Michael Ritchey (16-2 FS, 3-0 GR) won his fourth freestyle tournament of the season at 132 pounds. He teched Perry State Runner-Up Alex Valencia 12-2 and Union’s Caron Watson 17-5.

Cadet

Union Sophomore Jaylen Hernandez took first place in freestyle at 152 pounds. He teched Kody Driskill and Zachary Wattenbarger, then pinned Bryce Jackson in 1:25 and Taylor Pafford in 0:49.

Schoolboy

Justin Vaughn (2-2 FS, 4-1 GR) took first place in both styles at 70 pounds, winning all four of his matches by fall. In freestyle he pinned Caydon Miller in 2:32 and Jacob Caviness in 0:23. In Greco he pinned Miller in 2:00 and 1:06.

Christian Forbes (14-0 FS, 1-3 GR) took first place in freestyle for the fourth-straight week at 84 pounds. He defeated Jayce Caviness 10-6, then teched Riley Trickett 10-0, Rhett Peak 12-2, and Clay Gates 12-1.

Rhett Peak (10-4 FS, 6-0 GR) won his third-straight Greco tournament at 84 pounds, defeating Riley Trickett once by 12-2 tech fall and once by pin in 2:37. He came in runner-up in freestyle, defeating Clay Gates 11-6, Trickett 12-2, and Jayce Caviness 12-2, but falling 12-2 to teammate Christian Forbes.

Cole Brooks (8-1 FS, 7-1 GR) took first place in both styles at 91 pounds. In freestyle he teched Kenneth Adams 10-0 and pinned Timothy Eichler in 0:17. In Greco he pinned Adams in 0:34 and Eichler in 0:57.

Braden Anderson (10-8 FS, 5-8 GR) took third place in freestyle at 112 pounds, defeating Noah Smith 12-6 and Parker Lecoq 12-2, but falling 14-5 to JJ Long.

Ethan White (10-0 FS) won his fourth-straight freestyle tournament at 120 pounds, pinning Luke Young in 2:25 and 0:27.

Bryce Fisher (6-1 FS) won his second-straight freestyle tournament at 136 pounds, defeating Jose Flores 14-5 and 12-7.

Kaden Glass (6-0 FS, 3-0 GR) entered in freestyle at 210 pounds but didn’t draw any competitors.

Intermediate

Promised Johnson (14-4 FS, 6-9 GR) took first place in freestyle at 70 pounds, scoring a 10-0 tech fall against Bobby Brockman and a 15-4 tech of Brody Mills.

Novice

Robert Burke (5-1 FS, 4-3 GR) entered in both styles at 65 pounds but was the only competitor in his weight class. He didn’t get to wrestle but will advance to the State Tournament.

Clayton Giddens (14-0 FS) won his fifth-straight freestyle tournament at 70 pounds with 10-0 tech falls against Zane Donley, Dylan Abbott, and Wesley Madden. He has yet to give up a single point this season.

Abraham Flores (9-4 FS, 9-3 GR) won the Greco title at 100 pounds for the second week in a row, defeating Adrian Flores by tech fall and pin in a best-of-three series. In freestyle he took second place, teching Adrian, but getting teched by Garhett Reese.

Balance Johnson (11-2 FS, 10-1 GR) took first place in both styles at 120 pounds. He teched all four of his opponents 10-0.

Andrew Mullin (3-1 FS) took second place in freestyle at 120 pounds, pinning Hunter Degraffenreid in 3:24, but falling 10-0 to Balance Johnson.

CPHS Golf: Ashton Persons and Madison Kinard place 19th and 68th at State Tournament

Two members of the Charles Page High School girls golf team competed at the 6A State Championship in Ponca City this past week. Ashton Persons placed 19th out of 74, while Madison Kinard tied for 68th.

It was the first State Tournament for both girls.

 The tournament consisted of two rounds at Ponca City Country Club. Persons came into round one on fire, shooting a season-low score of 79 to tie for sixth place. Kinard was tied for 59th after round one with a score of 102. 

In the second half of the tournament Persons and Kinard shot 99 and 110, respectively, to finish with totals of 178 and 212.

Norman North's Kaitlin Milligan won the tournament with a total of 147, nine strokes better than the runner-up. Her first-round score of 73 was the best of any competitor for either day.

Owasso claimed the team title with a 21-stroke margin over Edmond North. 

Sand Springs wrestling club earns 9 first-place medals at Owasso tournament

Twenty three members of the Sand Springs Team Big wrestling club competed at the Oklahoma USA Wrestling tournament in Owasso last weekend. Clayton Giddens, Balance Johnson, Abraham Flores, Jackson Martin, Rhett Peak, Michael Ritchey, Kaleb Tabor, and Ethan White all won first place medals in either Freestyle or Greco-Roman wrestling. Peak took first place in both styles.

Team Big meets Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5:30 p.m. in the Charles Page High School wrestling room, and is open to wrestlers from the surrounding areas in addition to Sandites. 

Junior

Charles Page High School senior State Qualifier Michael Ritchey (14-2 FS, 3-0 GR) took first place in freestyle for the third time this spring at 126 pounds. He teched Tristan Herrera 13-2, then topped Perry State-Placer Alex Valencia 9-2 before teching Tahlequah State Runner-Up Jakob Lyons 10-0 in the finals.

Kaleb Tabor (7-3 FS, 0-2 GR) won his first tournament of the season in freestyle at 160 pounds. He pinned Jace Nicholas in 2:40 and Jonathan Ashby in 0:51.

Cadet

Sam Harris (3-6 FS, 3-3 GR) took third place in Greco at 132 pounds, pinning Cale Crawford in 2:31 and Blake Salt in 2:17.

Kyle Tucker (3-4 FS, 1-3 GR) took fourth place in freestyle at 120 pounds. He teched Bryen Richardson 12-0.

Schoolboy

Rhett Peak (7-3 FS, 4-0) took first place in both styles at 84 pounds. He teched all five of his opponents, giving up only two points total.

Owen Martin (2-2 FS) took first place in freestyle at 70 pounds with a pair of tech falls.

Ethan White (8-0 FS) continued his undefeated summer with a first-place finish in freestyle. He teched Trinit Zweifel 10-0 then pinned Ashondra Valencia in 1:48.

Justin Zane Vaughn (0-2 FS, 2-1 GR) took second place in both styles at 70 pounds. In freestyle he drew only one opponent and lost a pair of tech falls, but in Greco he teched Zayne Lewis 12-2 and Ethan Freer 16-6 before falling to Peak in the finals.

Clay Gates (7-10 FS, 0-1 GR) took second place in freestyle at 84 pounds. He teched Zayne Lewis 18-6 and Kaiser Simpson 12-1 before falling 8-0 to Peak.

Braden Anderson (8-7 FS, 4-6 GR) took second place in freestyle at 112 pounds. He teched Tyler Thompson 10-0, then topped Noah Smith 13-10 before falling 12-2 to JJ Long.

Intermediate

Promised Johnson (12-4 FS, 6-7 GR) took third place in freestyle at 70 pounds, pinning Bobby Brockman in 1:02 and topping Cash Mayfield in a 16-14 shootout. In Greco he drew only one opponent and was pinned twice by Brody Mills.

Nation Johnson (6-5 FS, 7-5 GR) took third place in freestyle at 80 pounds, pinning Ryder Seago in 2:48. In Greco he was teched twice, but received an injury default for third place.

Novice

Clayton Giddens (11-0 FS) continued his perfect streak this season with his tenth-straight technical fall for first place in freestyle at 70 pounds. He scored three 10-0 tech falls in Owasso and hasn’t given up a single point this season.

Balance Johnson (9-2 FS, 8-1 GR) took first place in Greco and second in freestyle at 100 pounds. In freestyle he was pinned in his opening match but rebounded with a pair of tech falls. In Greco he pinned Zeke Keith in 0:38 and teched Hunter Degraffenreid 10-0.

Abraham Flores (8-3 FS, 7-3 GR) took first place in Greco and third in freestyle at 100 pounds. In freestyle he won his opening match by tech fall, but lost the next by a single point. In Greco he teched both of his opponents 10-0.

Jaxon Trotter (3-2 FS, 1-3 GR) took second place in both styles at 90 pounds. In freestyle he pinned Payton Zweifel in 1:41 and topped teammate Kyler Tabor 9-5 before falling 9-4 to Gavin Salt in the finals. In Greco he pinned Zweifel in 0:49, but was pinned in 2:53 by Salt.

Kyler Tabor (1-2 FS) took third place in freestyle at 90 pounds, pinning Zweifel in 2:15.
