Charles Page High School played host to its biggest rival in a district battle Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium. The Lady Sandites fell 2-0 to the Lady Chieftains, but the boys dominated Sapulpa 5-0 for their biggest win of the season.

The Sandites (5-7 overall, 1-4 district) notched their first district win with an exclamation mark, steamrolling their biggest rivals (3-9, 0-5).

Senior midfielder Logan Jeffus scored his fifth goal of the season to draw first blood in the 18th minute, and the Sandites took a 1-0 lead into the half.

Edgar Soberano got the start at goalie and notched four saves in the first half before coming out with an injury. He was replaced by sophomore Ethan Tippit.

The Sandites came out pumped up after halftime and struck paydirt in the 55th minute with a penalty kick from Oklahoma Wesleyan University-signed senior Ignacio Garcia. Just three minutes later, sophomore Kaleb Brooks scored his first goal of the season.

Garcia was a man on fire, taking more shots than the rest of his team combined. It paid off as he ended up with his first brace of the season, notching a goal in the 74th minute.

Alex Hernandez also got in on the action, scoring his second goal of the year on a free kick in the 76th minute.

The Lady Sandites (1-11 overall, 0-5 district) fell 2-0 to the Lady Chieftains (6-6, 2-3). Freshman midfielder Sara Arundell scored both goals for Sapulpa.

Lady Sandite Softball drops fifth straight road game in double-header at Union

The No. 14 ranked Charles Page High School Slow Pitch Softball team (7-9) has been playing a tough schedule lately, and their record has reflected it. With four top-ten teams in a row, the Lady Sandites have suffered four losses straight, despite solid hitting efforts in each.

BAHS 12 CPHS 2

(Hits: BAHS 13, CPHS 5. Errors: BAHS 2, CPHS 2. LOB: BAHS 6, CPHS 4).

The Lady Sandites traveled to Jenks last Tuesday for a festival double-header against the No. 3 Broken Arrow Tigers (23-5) and the No. 1 Southmoore Sabercats (20-4).

The Lady Tigers took an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, then added five more in the third. Cameron Clemons outran an infield hit to centerfield for an in-the-park home run in the top of the fourth, but Broken Arrow tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Sabrina Usher tripled in the fifth inning, then scored on a single from Mackenzie Bechtold, but the Tigers added one more score in the bottom of the inning for the walk-off run-rule victory.

Southmoore 5 CPHS 2

(Hits: Southmoore 13, CPHS 7. Errors: CPHS 1, Southmoore 0. LOB: Southmoore 7, CPHS 4).

The top-ranked Sabercats jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second and third innings before the Lady Sandites cut into the deficit.

Usher hit yet another triple, this time to score Elizabeth Luttrell, then came in on a single from Jensen Arnold. Those would be the only Sandite scores of the game, however. Southmoore tacked on one last run in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the 5-2 win.

Union 15 CPHS 3

The Lady Sandites traveled to No. 8 Union (20-12) for a double header Tuesday and suffered a run-rule loss to the home team. They scored the opening run in the top of the first, but Union retaliated with three in the bottom of the first, three in the second, and never relinquished their lead.

Usher and Kimi Presnell scored on an error in the third inning to cut the deficit to 6-3, but the Redskins just added three more when it was their turn to bat.

The host team added six runs in the fourth for the double-digit lead, then held the Sandites scoreless in the top of the fifth for the run-rule victory.

Mustang 8 CPHS 2

(Hits: Mustang 8, CPHS 6. Errors: CPHS 4, Mustang 0. LOB: CPHS 6, Mustang 6).

The Lady Sandites put up a valiant effort against No. 9 Mustang (20-4) and went the distance, but it was the Lady Broncos' night to shine. They defeated the Sandites 8-2, then rolled over the home team 13-4.

Mustang jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Luttrell scored in the bottom of the fourth on a hit from Usher. Usher scored two plays later on a double from Jacie Taber.

The Broncos added two more runs in the sixth inning, then scored the final point in the seventh. Sand Springs tried to make a comeback with a single from Usher and a walk from Arnold, but the next three batters went down swinging.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in a rematch with No. 3 Broken Arrow, who they are 0-3 against this season so far. The game will be played at No. 12 Jenks (16-14), who the Sandites will take on at 5:15.

No. 14 CPHS Softball goes 2-2 at Haskell Tournament, six ladies hit homers

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The No. 14 ranked Charles Page High School Softball team (7-7) recently competed at the Haskell Slow Pitch tournament and split four games with two wins and two losses.

CPHS 4 Oktaha 3

The Lady Sandites topped 4A No. 6 Oktaha (26-7) by a single run in the opening round of the tournament. Madelyn Blair, Sabrina Usher, and Makenna Skaggs batted in Kimi Presnell, Jacie Taber, and CJ Norton in the top of the first inning.

The Lady Tigers had an equally effective hitting spree in the bottom of the fifth with runs from Chyann Fairchild, Mya Allen, and Mazie Richards. The tie ball game continued into an eighth inning where Felicity Horn singled and scored the go-ahead run on a double from Taber. Hannah Highfill got on base with a single for Oktaha, but was left stranded for the Sandite victory.

Haskell 8 CPHS 7

The girls got off to a good start in the second round, taking a 7-4 lead into the sixth inning before the 4A No. 18 Haskell Haymakers (17-12) came from behind with a pair of runs in the sixth inning.

Presnell and Taber, and Jensen Arnold all hit home runs, and Taber also scored a 3RBI double.

CPHS 12 Sapulpa 10

The Lady Sandites took on their Highway 97 rivals from Sapulpa (6-19) in the third round and continued their sweep of the rivalry with their third win this season against the Lady Chieftains. Usher, Cameron Clemons, and Blair each hit home runs.

Oktaha 11 CPHS 3

In the final round the Lady Sandites met Oktaha in a rematch and were unable to replicate their earlier success, despite scattering eleven hits over the course of the game. Presnell, Taber, and Clemons scored runs off hits from Arnold, Blair, and Presnell.

CPHS Baseball: Sandites drop three games in a row

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (13-13 overall, 3-6 district) had a rough time last week, dropping three straight games, two by a single run. They fell 9-2 and 8-7 to district-foe Union (21-6, 8-2), then were defeated 9-8 by Broken Arrow (23-5).

They will return to action Monday evening in Bartlesville (8-11, 3-5), then will host the Bruins Tuesday evening.

Union 9 CPHS 2

(Hits: Union 7, CPHS 5. Errors: CPHS 5, Union 1. LOB: Union 8, CPHS 5).

Union hosted the Sandites Monday evening and came back from a 2-0 first inning deficit to win 9-2 thanks to a series of Sandite errors.

Mack Thompson was the first to cross home plate, reaching on a double and scoring on a double from Treyce Tolbert. Tolbert came in on the next play thanks to an error at shortstop. Those would be the only runs of the game for Sand Springs.

Cowley County Community College-signed senior Hunter Greathouse (3-5) got the start and loss on the mound, despite not giving up a single earned run in his five innings. Union tied it up in the top of the second, then took a 5-2 lead in the third. Greathouse struck out six batters and walked six before being relieved by Braden Millican (2-0).

Union 8 CPHS 7

(Hits: Union 11, CPHS 7. Errors: Union 1, CPHS 0. LOB: CPHS 6, Union 5).

The Sandites cleaned up their defense big time in their Tuesday night home game, but even without committing any errors, they were still trumped by the Redskins.

Union was first on the board this time, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Sand Springs cut into that deficit in the top of the fourth with a double from Braden Askew to score Greathouse. Askew came in on a grounder from Cal Watkins, then Millican walked and scored on a single from Ty Steelman.

The Redskins had an equally successful time at the plate in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with two walks and a single before scoring four runs with back-to-back doubles.

Sand Springs tried to battle back in the top of the fifth as Thompson scored on a Greathouse single, Tolbert scored on a passed ball, then Greathouse scored on yet another double from Askew. Askew came home soon after on a hit from Watkins, but it would be the last run of the game.

Josh Cordell (3-2) got the start and the loss on the mound, pitching four strikeouts, three walks, and nine hits over four innings. Brock Youngblood (2-3) pitched relief and gave up two hits against four strikeouts.

BAHS 9 CPHS 8

(Hits: CPHS 10, BAHS 10. Errors: CPHS 2, BAHS 1. LOB: CPHS 7, BAHS 7).

Broken Arrow and Sand Springs were as close as two teams can be without tying. Both had ten hits, both stranded seven runners, but the Tigers got the walk off win in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double.

Thompson scored on a Tolbert double to start the game off, but Broken Arrow took advantage of an error and a passed ball to take the lead in the bottom of the first, then added an RBI single in the second to make it 3-1.

Sand Springs tied it up in the top of the third as Greathouse singled in Thompson and scored on a single from Watkins.

Thompson and Kyler Copeland singled and Taber walked to load the bases in the top of the fourth, then Taber and courtesy runner Garrett McCallie scored on hits from Greathouse and McCallie, respectively.

The Tigers added a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Greathouse hit a 3RBI double in the sixth for the 8-4 advantage.

Broken Arrow added two more runs in the sixth, then tied it up with a two-run homer in the seventh before getting the walkoff run on a double.

Askew (0-2) got the start on the mound, giving up five walks, seven hits, and four earned runs in five innings. Three other pitchers also saw action, and Greathouse was stuck with the loss after giving up three earned runs in the seventh.
