State Tournament Preview: No. 3 Lady Sandites to meet No. 13 Mustang in quarterfinal

    By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The brackets are in for the 2016-2017 OSSAA Basketball State Championship tournaments. All three rounds of the Boys' 6A tournament will be held at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center, while the Girls' quarterfinals will be hosted by Tulsa Memorial High School. The Girls' semifinals and Championship will be played at the Mabee Center.

The first game will be played at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday between No. 4 Deer Creek (24-2) and No. 6 Booker T. Washington (22-5). Deer Creek has been a top-contender throughout the season, finishing first in the Central Oklahoma Conference with a late-season victory over No. 1 Edmond Santa Fe. They earned their way to State undefeated in the post-season with an impressive 62-50 victory over No. 2 Choctaw. Washington went undefeated as the only 6A team in the Green Country Conference and won their Regional bracket, but ran into a hiccup against No. 3 Sand Springs. After falling 56-44 to the Lady Sandites, they won the Area Consolation 46-43 over No. 14 Bartlesville.

Next up will be No. 3 Sand Springs (23-1) vs No. 13 Mustang (17-10) at 3:30 p.m. The Lady Sandites are now the only one-loss team left in 6A after both Edmond Santa Fe and Choctaw went down late in the season. They held on to the Frontier Valley Championship despite an upset loss to Owasso, then went undefeated in the post-season with a victory over Booker T. Washington for the Area Championship. Mustang has taken the low-key approach to the State Tournament. They placed sixth in the Central Oklahoma Conference, won their Regional with an upset of No. 8 Norman, fell to No. 1 Edmond Santa Fe in Area, but bounced back with an upset of No. 11 Westmoore.

No. 1 Edmond Santa Fe (24-2) will meet with the biggest surprise of the season--unranked Ponca City (16-7). Santa Fe took the top-spot in the rankings after previous No. 1 Choctaw fell to 4A No. 1 Ft. Gibson at the Tournament of Champions. They went undefeated till after the Regional brackets came out, then fell 68-51 to No. 4 Deer Creek and 40-39 to No. 13 Mustang. Since then they've won their way through the post season with Regional and Area Championships, capped by a 65-55 payback victory over Mustang. Ponca City's outsider status at the State Tournament is fitting with their outsider status in Class 6A. The Lady Cats are the only team without a conference and have played a mix of teams at various levels of competition. They won their Regional with upsets of No. 12 Midwest City and No. 6 Owasso, then topped No. 9 Norman North in the Area Consolations.

The final game of the day will be between No. 2 Choctaw (23-3) and No. 5 Putnam City West (24-2) at 8:30 p.m. The Yellowjackets have held the No. 2 spot since their finals loss to 4A No. 1 Ft. Gibson in the Tournament of Champions. Despite the loss, they remained undefeated in their division till an upset by Putnam West snatched the Big Ten Conference title from their grip late in the season. They fell 62-50 to No. 4 Deer Creek in the first round of Area, and needed overtime to top No. 16 Edmond North for their ticket to State. Putnam West remains the only team undefeated in Class 6A, with their lone losses coming to Campbell County, Wyoming, and 3A No. 3 Holland Hall. They went undefeated in the post-season, topping Ponca City for the Area title.

The semifinal games will be played at 9:00 a.m. and noon on Friday, with the Championship round being played at noon on Saturday.

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon at the hands of their biggest rivals. The Sandites and Sapulpa Chieftains (1-0) were all locked up and scoreless till the bottom of the seventh inning when the home team drew a lucky break to clinch the victory.

Senior Josh Cordell (0-0) got the start on the mound and gave up two hits and one walk against six strikeouts before being relieved in the seventh inning. Brock Youngblood (0-1) came in for the final stretch and suffered the loss with a single hit.

Senior shortstop Mack Thompson started things off for the Sandites with a ground ball single into left field, but was left stranded after stealing second as the next three hitters all flied out.

Sapulpa starting pitcher Jacob Esch walked Ian Baker and Ben Banker in the second inning but managed to strand both with a strikeout. The first Chieftain hit came in the bottom of the inning on a line drive double into left field from Gage Williams, but nothing would come of it.

The back and forth exchange continued with neither team finding home plate.

Both teams went through the entire game without committing a single error, right down to the final stretch. Then Sapulpa nearly got themselves in trouble in the top of the seventh. After the first two Sandites grounded out, Cal Watkins reached on an error by relief pitcher Robert Lino, then advanced to second on yet another error. The home team pulled out of it, however, and stranded Watkins on second as Treyce Tolbert grounded out to Lino.

Alan Shibley came in clutch for the Chieftains, sending a fly ball to center field for a double. This time it was the Sandites' turn to commit an error as William returned to the plate and sent a ground ball to third baseman Hunter Greathouse. Greathouse sent the fielder's choice to second, but overthrew Watkins, giving Shibley time to round home plate for the walk off victory.

Sand Springs will return to action Monday evening with their district-debut against Enid (0-2 overall, 0-2 district) at home. Sapulpa will host Deer Creek (0-0) for their first district game of the season, also on Monday. The Highway 97 rivals will get a rematch on March 31st, this time on the Sandites' home field.

The No. 12 ranked Sapulpa High School boys' basketball team (17-7) extended their season by at least one more night by putting an end to the season for their Highway 97 rivals from Sand Springs. The Charles Page High School Sandites (12-14) battled back from a 23-point deficit in the third quarter of the Area Consolation Semifinals, but ultimately fell 85-73 at Whitey Ford arena in Bixby Friday night.

It was a shootout from the very beginning as University of Central Oklahoma-signed senior Kyle Keener drew first blood for the Sandites off an assist from Colt Savage. Keenan Ballance hit a pair from the stripe, Savage reclaimed the lead with a two-point jump shot, then Julian Smith did the same to tie it right back up. The back and forth affair continued with the Chieftains first taking the lead at 9-8 off a three-point basket from Ballance. Ballance scored again from two-point range then it was back and forth again with Sapulpa leading 17-15 at the buzzer.

Smith made it a two-score game with a pair of free throws to start the second, but Keener and Jacob Garbey scored back-to-back to tie it at 19-all. Ballance struck again from three-point range, then Keener hit double digits with 5:30 left in the half.

Then Sapulpa began to pull away. Smith hit two from the stripe and Ballance snagged a steal and scored in transition. Not to be outdone, Smith did the same, and did it twice in a row to make it 30-21. The Chieftains were deadly from three-point range, shooting six-of-eleven in the first half and slowly deepening the gap to 45-31 by halftime.

Both teams had two players in double digits by the final buzzer of the half. Ballance and Smith led all scorers with 20 and 19 respectively, followed by Keener with 15 and Savage with 12.

Senior Josh Taber started the second half hot for Sand Springs, scoring twice in the first minute to cut things to 48-37, but Sapulpa scored six-straight before Matt Price made his way into the scorebook with a layup. It wasn't enough to stymie the Chieftain tide, however. Hunter Hoggatt got in on the action with a three, Smith made a three-point play off a Savage foul, then scored through contact once again to make it 62-39 with 2:10 in the third.

Just as things were beginning to look bleak, the Sandites went on a nine-point run. Colt Savage hit a two, younger brother Cale Savage hit his first bucket of the game with a three ball, the elder Savage hit two from the charity stripe, and Keener hit a layup to cut it to 62-48. Ballance got the final say of the period and the Chieftains entered the final stretch 64-48.

Keener dominated the basket in the fourth quarter, scoring thrice on offensive rebounds, and picked up penalty shots on two of them all in the first few minutes. A basket by Price cut things to 71-58, but the deficit would remain in that region for the duration. The closest the Sandites would get was 78-68, but as soon as Sand Springs would start to draw near, the Chieftains would surge forward once again, ultimately holding out for the 85-73 win.

Three players ended up north of thirty in the wild affair, and five broke double digits. Ballance led all scorers with 35 points, and teammates Smith and Trey Phipps contributed 30 and 15, respectively. Keener ended his high-school career with a bang and led the Sandites for the eighth time this season with his fifth double-double. The future Broncho scored 31 points to beat his previous career-high of 22, and snatched eleven rebounds. Junior Colt Savage posted 22 points with six rebounds.

The Chieftains will take on No. 7 Booker T. Washington (18-7) in the Area Consolation Finals Saturday at 6:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the State Tournament next week. The two teams have yet to meet this season.

    Scoring: (Union) Chargois 19, Rodriguez 17, Johnson 13, Jamerson 10, Garcia 6, Banks 1. (BTW) Fuqua 20, Bereal 9, Johnson 8, Lucas 7, Jones 2.

The first round of the Area Championship wasn't much of a surprise as the undefeated and undisputed No. 1 ranked Union Redskins (26-0) rolled to a massive 66-46 victory over No. 7 Booker T. Washington (18-7).

The first quarter and a half were no contest as Union took a 9-0 lead out of the gate with a pair of field goals from both Ethan Chargois and Adrian Rodriguez. RJ Fuqua got his team on the scoreboard, but four minutes later the deficit was 17-2 to start the second period.

The Redskins continued to wreak havoc, pushing it to 26-2 before Triston Johnson got the Hornets back on track with a pair of free throws. Fuqua went to work with back-to-back transition layups with 2:00 minutes left in the half.

The Hornets struggled with accuracy and were one-of-eighteen on field goals before Fuqua found his feet. Johnson went back to the line for two more, then added the first and only non-Fuqua field goal of the half.

By the time the two teams headed to the locker room the Hornets had cut their deficit by seven, but still trailed by a lopsided score of 29-12. While the Redskins were giving the basket a beating with twelve goals on 24 attempts, the Hornets were having trouble even finding the rim and were only 4-of-23.

Chargois kicked off the second half from three-point range, then Ahjae Johnson completed a three-point play before Fuqua scored in transition. Demarco Jones made his way onto the scoreboard for the Hornets, but N'Kiel Jamerson negated the damage from the free-throw line.

Fuqua continued to be the driving force for the Hornets, but by the time he broke double-digits, three Redskins had already done so. Booker T. improved on their accuracy, shooting five-of-fifteen in the third, but they still trailed 48-22 after the third. Booker T. won the final stanza 24-18, but they were too deep in the hole and the top-seeded Redskins prevailed 66-46.

Fuqua led all scorers with 20 points, but was the only Hornet in double digits. Four Union players broke double, led by Chargois with 19. Rodriguez scored 17, Johnson posted 13, and Jamerson contributed 10.

Sandite Baseball wins season-opener 10-2 against Tulsa Jaguars

    By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (1-0) officially kicked off the season Thursday night with a 10-2 home victory over the defending Homeschool Division I National Champions, the Tulsa NOAH Jaguars (0-1). Cowley County Community College-signed senior Hunter Greathouse (1-0) got the start and the win on the mound, striking out six batters and giving up only one hit.

The visiting Jaguars struck first after a rocky start to the game. After the first batter flied out to Treyce Tolbert in center field, Nathaniel Moss drew a walk, advanced to third on an error, then scored on a wild pitch. The next batter grounded out to Mack Thompson at shortstop, then Greathouse picked up his first strike out of the season to bring his boys in to bat.

Cal Watkins singled in the first plate appearance of his varsity career, then scored on a line drive single from Greathouse to tie the game. The Sandites took the lead in the bottom of the third as Riley Rutledge ran courtesy for Greathouse and scored on an error at third base. Jaguar pitcher Kaden Alexander walked a pair of Sandites and Braden Askew scored on a single from Kameron Adock.

Greathouse gave up a single and a walk in the top of the fourth, but followed them up with a pair of strikeouts and Brooks Antle grounded out to Ben Banker at first. The Sandites added three more runs in the bottom of the inning as Askew walked on loaded bases to score Watkins, who also walked, and Ian Baker batted in Braden Cook and Ben Banker. Banker had been hit by pitch and Cook was walked as well.

NOAH got back on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Askew relieved Greathouse on the mound and struck out his first batter, but walked Evan Jacoby who scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Replogle.

Sand Springs continued to wreak havoc in the bottom of the fifth as senior Mack Thompson doubled on a fly ball to left field, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Watkins. Tolbert followed it up with a single, stole second, then advanced home on a catcher's error. Braden Millican ran courtesy for Cook, who walked, stole second, then scored on a single from Askew. Baker was next at bat and sent a line drive single into center field to score Banker for the final run of the evening.

The Sandites are returning from a 21-14 season and graduated seven players and six regular starters. They will return to action Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with a Highway 97 Rivalry game in Sapulpa.

It was history in the making Thursday evening at Will Rogers High School, as the No. 3 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (23-1) rolled to dominating 56-44 victory over No. 6 Booker T. Washington (21-5) in the Area Championship. The Lady Sandites will advance to the State Championship tournament next Thursday for the first time since 2011.

Sophomore standout Destiny Johnson tied her career-high with 20 points in the victory, aided by classmate Holly Kersgieter with 12 as the only two players from either team to score in double digits.

It was a slow starter and the two teams combined for the lowest-scoring first half since the Sandites' season-opener against Bartlesville. The first quarter was evenly paced as both teams warmed up, but by halftime Sand Springs had emerged to double-digit lead over the Lady Hornets.

Sand Springs won the tipoff but turned it over on a travel. Johnson snagged a steal off the Hornet's corresponding possession and sent a long pass to Oklahoma State University-signed senior Sydney Pennington to draw first blood. It would be the first of many combinations for the two. Johnson got on the scoreboard on the next possession to make it 4-0.

The Hornets took a lot of shots, but made few, missing their first ten attempts before getting on the scoreboard with a layup from Megan Jackson. Kambri Davidson followed it up with two more before Johnson snagged yet another steal and transition layup.

Jackson posted two more for the Hornets but junior Ohio State Volleyball-commit Gloria Mutiri entered the game and gave her team an 8-6 lead to end the first period.

Johnson continued her impressive play with the opening basket of the second period on a long in-bound throw from Pennington, and Kersgieter added another basket soon after. Rhys Anderson got the Hornets on the scoreboard, but the deadly duo went back to reeking havoc. Pennington posted two, sent another long assist to Johnson, then hit the bucket once again. Camryn Fennell made her way onto the scoreboard for the Hornets' only other basket of the period, then Pennington and Kierra McGee ended out the half for a 21-10 Lady Sandite lead.

While the first half was a bit slow, the Sandites more than made up for it with their second highest-scoring third period of the season with 23 points. Kersgieter scored three times before Booker T. found the basket. It was back and forth from there till the end of the period when the Sandites went on a seven-point run with a pair of free throws from both Kersgieter and fellow sophomore Jacie Taber, and a three-pointer from Isabella Regalado. Anderson hit a pair from the charity stripe for the Hornets, but Sand Springs held a 44-26 lead going into the final stretch.

The Hornets ate into their deficit in the fourth quarter with seven points from the charity stripe, cutting it to 50-38, but those final twelve points were unattainable and the Sandites held on for a 56-44 victory to punch their ticket to State.
