Undefeated No. 11 Hutchinson Knocks Off No. 3 Butler

EL DORADO – The No. 11 Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team took over sole possession of first place in the Jayhawk Conference Wednesday night after returning from the holiday break with a dominant victory over No. 3 Butler at the Power Plant.

Former Lady Sandites Hailey Jackson and Journey Armstead were top contributors in the victory.

Hutchinson defeated a Top 5 nationally ranked team for the first time since March 8, 2017 when the Blue Dragons defeated then-No. 4 Seward County 65-44 in the 2017 Region VI Tournament.

The Blue Dragons are now 13-0 overall and are the last remaining undefeated team in the Jayhawk Conference at 7-0. The Blue Dragons play host to Northwest Tech at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sports Arena. Butler is now 12-1 and 6-1 in the KJCCC.

Hutchinson trailed 7-2 with 5:36 to play in the first quarter before finally getting its offense going. Armstead's layup with 13 seconds left in the period gave Hutchinson an 11-10 lead after the first quarter.

The Blue Dragons exploded in the second quarter, outscoring Butler 28-4 over the first 9 1/2 minutes of the second quarter. Hutchinson shot 71.4 percent (10 of 14) and was 5 of 5 from 3-point distance in the second stanza. Butler was just 3 of 13 in the second quarters and committed seven turnovers.

Leading 23-14 with 5:22 to play in the period, the Blue Dragons went on a 16-0 run over a span of 5 minutes, 7 seconds to build a game-high 25-point lead at 39-14 with 18 seconds to play. Butler's Freddie Wallace hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Dragon lead to 39-17 at halftime.

KiAryn Taylor Commits to Ranger College Following Season-Ending ACL Tear

Charles Page High School senior KiAryn Taylor announced on X Friday that her basketball season is indeed over and that she is committing to Ranger College next year.

The 5’10” senior went off for a career-best 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 steals in a December 7th tournament victory over Edison Prep, but she went down in pain the following day during a semifinal game against Bishop Kelley and had to be carried off the court.

“With a true heavy heart, I am sharing that I will be missing the rest of my senior season due to two tears in my knee,” tweeted Taylor. A Monday MRI confirmed both an ACL tear and a tear in her meniscus.

“Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support. Most importantly, thank you to my coaches and teammates. This one hit home and it hurts like crazy but I can’t wait to support my teammates as they accomplish all of our goals the rest of this season.”

“I wouldn’t call this a setback. I know my future is bright and right now God is just preparing me for that journey.”

Taylor averaged 8.6 points, 6 rebounds, and 1.4 steals during the Sandites’ 4-1 start on the season and ended her career with 226 points.

“With missing the rest of the season, I am blessed to say that I will be committing to Ranger College,” tweeted Taylor, who also had offers from Cleveland Community College, Western Texas College, and Lincoln Trail College.

“I want to thank my mom for being my number one supporter through it all. I want to give a huge thanks to all the college coaches that gave me an opportunity to play for their program. Most importantly I want to thank my high school coaches and my teammates.”

“I wouldn’t have made it where I am today if it weren’t for the man above, God. I am so thankful for Coach Morefield for believing in me and giving me a chance to play for me. I am excited about playing at the next level and I’m very grateful. I know my future is bright and now it’s time to prove it.”

Ranger College is an NJCAA program in Ranger, Texas. The Rangers are 3-10 in the current season under first-year head coach Mark Morefield and went 14-17 last season.

Freshmen Tianna Butler and Aaliyah Simone Lead Sandites to Win over Putnam City

One of the biggest strengths for the Sand Springs girls basketball team coming into this season was its depth of size and talent.

That depth was on full display Tuesday night as No. 7 Charles Page High School (5-2, 3-1) rolled to a 68-51 district victory over Putnam City (4-3) despite being down two starters.

“Coming into this year I thought we had quite a bit of depth,” said head coach Josh Berry. “I didn’t want to test that, but that’s where we are right now.”

With Abigail Martin and Kiaryn Taylor on crutches, Hope Bump waiting on OSSAA clearance, Calla Fueshko still recovering from an ACL tear last season, and Sakauri Wilson out till the new year, it was the underclassmen’s time to shine.

The freshman class combined for 45 points and 31 rebounds, led by an astounding double-double from Tianna Butler with 22 points and 18 rebounds.

“That’s a good deal for her to have that coming into the break,” said Berry. “I think she’s got more in her personally. I’m going to expect more out of her. I think the sky’s the limit. She’s got to go and keep playing harder and keep making plays.”

Aaliyah Simone also had a career night with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals, while Neveah Garrison scored 4 points and Kadynce Young scored 2 on the first possession of her career.

“We’ve got a long ways to go,” said Berry. “We’ve got to get some of those freshmen up to speed, but they did a good job making plays and the end of the day it’s about making more plays than the other team and tonight I think we did that.”

Simone scored a layup and a trey to open the game and ensured the Sandites would never trail. Butler added a three-pointer soon after and was 4-of-6 on the evening, showing she’s as much of an outside shooting threat as she is an inside big.

The Pirates opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run to cut it to 15-11 but Yonni Morris went off for eight points in the quarter and the Sandites took a 31-20 lead into halftime.

Putnam City only got within double digits once in the second half, on a free-throw from Kayla Hill at 38-29, but the Sandites went on a 10-2 run and entered the fourth up 48-34.

Butler’s final bucket off the night gave the Sandites their biggest lead at 63-40 midway through the final stanza.

“Kadynce did a great job…scored on her first possession, applied some great pressure for us,” said Berry.

“Neveah did some great things off the bench as far as just walling up and making it hard for them when they were driving. They were getting anything they wanted to early on. I thought she kind of helped set that tone along with Jordan (Gilton).”

Morris put together her sixth consecutive double-digit game with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 6 assists. Tayja Butler also had a strong performance with a career-best 8 points and 4 boards.

“We’ve got a lot of different people that can score the basketball in many different ways,” said Berry. “We’ve just got to find ways for them to do that and be efficient with it. As long as we can do that, I think we’ve got a chance to continue to grow.”

Sand Springs will take the rest of 2023 off before returning to action at the Putnam City Invitational on January 4th.

“That’s a good deal with us missing so many people,” said Berry. “It gives us time not only to rest up but to practice. We’re going to have to play a way different style and we’re just going to have to figure that out over the month.”

Kayla Hill led the Pirates with 22 points, followed by Destinee Hunt with 12. The Pirates will host No. 4 Owasso (6-1, 3-1) on Tuesday to conclude the year.
