CPHS Basketball: Kersgieter/Regalado score 17 apiece, Girls top Bishop Kelley 53-40

Juniors Holly Kersgieter and Isabella Regalado scored seventeen points apiece Friday night to lead Charles Page High School (15-7, 11-3) past the Bishop Kelley Comets (5-17, 2-12). Even missing one of their top scorers, the Class 6A No. 13 ranked Sandites managed a 53-40 victory over the private Catholic school.

Kersgieter hit a pair from the charity stripe to start the night. Kirstyn Stecker tied it up, then the Sandites went on a nine-point run before Ellie Davie broke it up. Kersgieter, Meaghan Cyr, and Isabella Regalado exchanged three-point baskets, then the Comets went on a six-point run before Madison Burris made a three.

Trailing 17-13 after the first, the home team went on an eight-point run and took the lead with a basket from Cyr. Regalado scored from deep to briefly reclaim the advantage, Halle Poleman tied it with a free throw, then Kersgieter made it 25-23 at halftime.

The Sandites took charge in the third period, jumping out to a double-digit lead. Regalado and Grace Ritchie exchanged threes, then Kersgieter and Taber got in the action to make it 36-26. Amy West made a three-point play, Sand Springs went on a seven-point run, then Poleman made a two to end the quarter 43-31.

Raegan Padilla started the fourth with a three, Bree Berge made a two, Kelley rattled off six, the Sandites returned five, then Ritchie made the final points of the night from three-point range. Ritchie led the Comets with ten points on the evening.

The Lady Sandites finished the season 11-3 for third place in the Frontier Valley Conference after winning it 13-1 last season. Bishop Kelley finished 2-12 for ninth place for the third-straight season.

The Sandites will return to action Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Bixby when they play Stillwater (7-16) in the first round of the Regional playoffs. The Comets will travel to East Central and take on No. 9 Coweta (11-12) Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

At halftime the school held a recognition of John Heckenkemper and officially named the new school track after the former coach.

CPHS Basketball: Johnson/Kersgieter combine for 48 in 64-51 win over Jenks

Charles Page High School junior standouts Destiny Johnson and Holly Kersgieter combined for 48 points Tuesday night to help the Class 6A No. 13 ranked Lady Sandites (14-7, 10-3) overcome a feisty opponent in the Jenks Trojans (11-11, 6-7).

Sand Springs got off to a rough start and struggled with both height deficit and turnovers, giving up a season-worst 43 rebounds and sixteen steals, but out-shot their foes 51% to 24% to secure the 64-51 Frontier Valley Conference victory.

Jenks came ready to play, scoring first on a Haley Meely layup. Johnson responded two possessions later, but Emma Wasson hit a free throw. Johnson made one of her own to tie it, then Jacie Taber added another to take the lead once and for all.

Taber followed it up with a field goal and a steal to create momentum for the Sandites who went on a nine-point run before Meely hit a three. Madison Burris immediately returned the favor, and Taber made it 16-6 to close the first period.

Meely kicked off the second period, the Sandites rattled off five, Rylie Watson made two, then Kersgieter hit her first field goal of the night. By the end of the half the Sandites held a double-digit lead at 29-17.

The Trojans cut it back to manageable with a putback from Watson and a three pointer from Meely. Johnson scored four to sandwich a pair of Kersgieter free throws, but Trinity Jackson went on a three-point run and Meely posted two more to keep it close.

The Trojans won the third quarter 14-10 to stay in contention. The final stanza was the highest scoring for both teams, but Kersgieter led the way with twelve points for the thirteen point victory.

Johnson led all scorers with 26 points and twelve rebounds, followed by Kersgieter with 22 points and eleven rebounds. Meely led the Trojans with sixteen points, followed by Jackson with eleven and Makenna Burch with ten.

The Sandites will close Frontier Valley Conference action Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Bishop Kelley High School (5-16, 2-11) who they topped 64-43 in the season-opener. Jenks will try to repeat a January 64-53 win over No. 19 Sapulpa (11-11, 6-7).

CPHS Basketball: No. 3 Owasso hammers Sand Springs 61-35 at BOK Center

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls' basketball team (13-7, 9-3) suffered their worst defeat in three years at the Third Annual High School Hoops Showcase Saturday night. The No. 3 Owasso Rams (18-3, 9-3) shut out the Sandites 17-0 in the first period at the BOK Center and rode that success to a 61-35 Frontier Valley Conference victory.

The Rams immediately retaliated with six points of their own, Destiny Johnson got in on the action, Burris hit the first three for the Sandites, then Owasso went on an eleven point run before Taber hit another free throw to end the half 36-13.

CPHS Basketball: Girls overcome Union 49-37, Johnson scores 23

It wasn’t a perfect game, but the Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (13-6, 9-2) utilized a fast start and a fourth-quarter resurgence to overcome Union High School (6-13, 3-7) Tuesday night on the road.

The Redskins scored first on a layup from Idalis Ortiz, but that was their only lead of the game. Isabella Regalado sank a three and Destiny Johnson hit two from the charity stripe to take the lead once and for all. Kimi Presnell hit a three, Johnson scored two more from the stripe, and Jacie Taber scored on a putback for a 12-7 advantage. Ortiz added another basket, then the Sandites went on an eight-point run to close out the quarter 20-9.

Union found momentum in the second quarter, riding an eight-point run into the second half to cut it to 25-19. The visitors led by as much as fourteen before the Sadie Moyer hit a pair of free throws to end the third quarter 36-31.

The home team may have won the middle two quarters, but the Sandites won the bookends and got back out front with a seven point run in the fourth before Moyer scored the only three of the night for Union. Kersgieter and Johnson combined for six more before Kaylen Nelson ended the game with a free throw.

The Sandites shared scoring duties in the first quarter with five players making their way in the book, but Kersgieter and Johnson were responsible for all 39 points in the next three periods. Johnson led all scorers with 23 points, while Moyer led the Redskins with fifteen. Kersgieter was the only other player in double-digits, putting up fourteen.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at the BOK Center with a 6:30 p.m. game against No. 3 Owasso (16-3, 7-3). The Sandites won the first meeting 49-42, but the Rams were missing key players at the time and are currently riding a seven-game streak. Union will travel to No. 19 Sapulpa (11-9, 6-5) Friday at 6:30 p.m. to try and avenge a 53-33 December loss.

CPHS Basketball: Sapulpa wins Highway 97 Rivalry, Kersgieter scores 23

On paper, the Sandites were the clear favorite. A better record, a better ranking, and a twelve-point win at a previous meeting. But things are never that easy in the Frontier Valley Conference. That Sapulpa and Sand Springs have a heated rivalry only added to the fact that this game would be proven on the court, not on paper.

While Class 6A No. 11 ranked Sand Springs (12-6, 8-2) had dropped a twelve-point loss to undefeated No. 2 Bartlesville a week prior, the No. 20 Chieftains (11-8, 6-4) took the Bruins into overtime earlier this week before falling by six. They rode that momentum into Friday night’s foray and rolled to a 58-52 Victory.

DeAsia Thomas drew first blood and the teams traded punches till Taylor Dement and Ray Osborn scored back-to-back for an 8-4 lead. The game went to free throws from there as the teams combined for ten fouls in the first quarter. Kiarra Brooks and Holly Kersgieter exchanged field goals to end the quarter with the visitors on top 12-11.

Dement scored three to start the second period, Isabella Regalado hit a long two, then Lindsay Hall scored a three and Dement added a layup for the 20-13 advantage. Destiny Johnson paved the way for a major comeback, scoring seven points near the end of the period with four from Kersgieter, including a buzzer-beater to tie it at 24-24.

Kimi Presnell gave the Sandites their first and only lead at the 5:03 mark of the third period but Dement scored four straight to put the visitors back out front. Jacie Taber capped off the quarter with a putback as the Sandites trailed 41-39.

Brooks hit a pair of free throws to kick off the fourth, Kersgieter sank a three, then Dement, Brooks, and Temira Poindexter scored six straight. Taber broke up the streak, but Dement scored back-to-back and Osborn hit a free throw for a double-digit lead.

Kersgieter and Bree Berge scored a pair of field goals, Brooks retaliated, then Kersgieter scored again to make it 56-50 with 1:08 to play. Dement scored a pair of free throws for Sapulpa, Berge scored a pair for the Sandites, and the Chieftains secured the upset.

Dement led all scorers with 25 points while Kersgieter paced the Sandites with 23 points and eleven rebounds. Johnson added twelve points and seven rebounds for Sand Springs while Brooks contributed ten for the Chieftains.

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday at Union (6-12, 3-6) while the Chieftains will host No. 9 Bixby (6-4). The Sandites previously trounced the Redskins 71-54 and the Chieftains topped Bixby 44-39.
