CPHS Football: Sandites head to Shawnee for first time in 21 years

The Class 6A-II No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-2) will kick off district action at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Shawnee against the No. 15 Wolves (0-3). The last time the two teams met, none of the current players were born yet. While the Sandites are hoping to get back to an even record in their third-straight road game, their hosts are simply hoping to snap a four-game losing streak.

Last Week

Sand Springs traveled to Greenwood, Arkansas (2-1) to take on the defending 6A State Champions, and they more than met their match. The Bulldogs prevailed 49-13 with a first-string 42-0 shutout. Caden Pennington was held to a 12-21-45-0 passing performance, but he led the ground game with fifteen carries for 95 yards and a score.

Shawnee was the 25th-straight victim of the defending 5A State Champions from Carl Albert (3-0), falling 47-7 on the road. The Wolves scored their lone touchdown in the first quarter and gave up 33 unanswered points. Heath Hunter passed for 123 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The Sandites started out with a 41-28 loss to Mansfield Summit, TX (1-2) and rebounded with a 45-24 victory at No. 13 Putnam City (0-3). Shawnee lost 35-34 to Choctaw (2-1) and 42-7 to Guthrie (3-0).

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 5-6 season, led by twelfth-year Head Coach Dustin Kinard with a 61-62 record. They are riding an all-time program best streak of six-straight seasons with playoff berths. They have been in Class 6A-II since its inception in 2014. The Sandites hold one gold ball, winning the 2A State title in 1966.

Shawnee is coming off a 7-4 season at the 5A level. Head Coach Billy Brown is in his fifteenth season with a 90-71 record and back-to-back playoff appearances. The Wolves won the 5A State title in 2003 and the 3A title in 1973.

The Series (Sand Springs 5-1)

10/30/1992 - The first ever meeting between the two teams went to Shawnee. The Wolves (6-3) earned a 6A playoff berth with a 21-14 home victory over L.D. Baines’s Sandites (3-6). Mike Quimby scored on a one-yard keeper and on a fourteen-yard pass to Aaron Fugate.

10/29/1993 - Sand Springs (6-3) won a 14-0 shutout over Shawnee (2-7) in district action, led by Delvin Jordan with 130 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. The stifling Sandite defense surrendered only seventy yards of total offense.

11/4/1994 - Sand Springs (4-6) ended the season on a high note with an 18-6 victory, led by Jordan at QB.

11/3/1995 - Dustin Morrow passed 12-16-130 for a touchdown to lead the Sandites (6-4) past Shawnee (2-8) in the regular season finale. Walker Childers carried seventeen times for 96 yards and a score and the Sandites prevailed 20-7.

9/27/1996 - Marc Brown carried for 116 yards to lead the Sandites (4-0) in a 36-0 shutout at Shawnee.

9/26/1997 - Sand Springs (4-0) rolled the Wolves 35-0 thanks to a four-touchdown performance by Pedro Negron. The Sandites ran 33-251 in a mostly grounded attack, recovered four Shawnee fumbles, and blocked a field goal attempt.

CPHS Football: Sandites fall 49-13 to defending Arkansas State Champs

Senior QB Caden Pennington racked up career yardage on the ground Friday night in Greenwood, Arkansas.

The Charles Page High School varsity football team (1-2) bit off more than they could chew Friday night in Greenwood, Arkansas, falling to the defending Class 6A State Champions (2-1), a team that has only lost three games in the past four seasons.

Senior quarterback Caden Pennington was held to a season low 45 passing yards after averaging over 180 in the first two games. He made up for it on the ground, however, running up a career-high of 95 yards with his second career touchdown. Joel Mackey contributed 82 yards and a score on the ground, while Trey Wilkerson had fifty.

The Bulldogs scored on the first offensive play of the game with senior quarterback Peyton Holt running it fourteen yards after Max Vickery recovered a fumbled kickoff return.

Greenwood’s special teams continued to shine with Luke Leonard returning a punt for a 57 yard touchdown after the Sandites were held to a quick three-and-out. Less than three minutes into the game and they led 14-0 with two extra points from kicker Grant Ennis.

The Sandite offense managed a slow and steady eleven-play sixty-yard march to the Bulldog redzone. After taking a six yard sack, Pennington tried to make up for it with a double-reverse endzone pass that was dropped by the receiver. A false start and two pass breakups later and the Bulldogs got the ball back for a score.

Greenwood catapulted 67 yards in three plays, highlighted by a 54-yard keeper. Marc Jones took a handoff from two yards out and Ennis made it 21-0. They scored again on the opening play of the second quarter with an eighteen yard pass from Holt to Leonard.

Holt found Treyton Dawson from 31 yards out and Dawson broke two tackles for the 35-0 lead. Sand Springs marched 65 yards in thirteen plays, including a fourth down conversion, but turned the ball over with an incomplete pass at the Greenwood fifteen.

The Bulldogs scored on the opening possession of the second half when Holt made the most of a broken play and ran it in from ten. With a 42-0 lead, the Dogs finally sent in the second string.

The Sandites scored on an eighty-yard drive with a twenty-yard run from Mackey. Jaden Weiser’s kick missed, but the Sandites had averted the shutout.

Second-string quarterback Jace Presley led the Bulldogs in a 66-yard scoring march capped by an eighteen yard Aydin Chatfield touchdown run and Jackson Stewart kicked the extra point shortly before the end of the third quarter.

Sand Springs struck again to start the fourth quarter off. They traveled seventy yards in twelve plays before Pennington scrambled in from ten yards out after the pass play fell apart. This time Weiser’s PAT rang true for the final point of the game.

Timothy Earnhardt took over at quarterback and brought his team to the Sandites’ six before taking a knee to end the game.

Sand Springs will travel to Shawnee (0-3) next Friday at 7:00 p.m. to kick off district action.

CPHS Football Preview: No. 8 Sandites to take on Arkansas State Champions

After securing their first victories of the 2018 season, Sand Springs and Greenwood, Arkansas will both be looking to improve to a winning record Friday night at Smith Robinson Stadium.

The first-ever meeting between the two teams will be played on the home turf of the defending Arkansas 6A State Champions. A daunting foe, but not something the Sandites aren't used to. Sand Springs took on the Arkansas 5A State Champions from Pulaski Academy the past two years. Both were brutal losses, but helped prepare the Sandites for some of the tough district battles to come. 

Greenwood went undefeated in three-straight regular seasons before losing their opener this year. They made it to the State finals three years in a row before finally wining their eighth gold ball last season.

Last Season Record: 5-6.

Last week: Dominated Putnam City 45-24, leading by as much as 35 points before sending in the backups. Caden Pennington threw 9-15-169-0 for three touchdowns. Joel Mackey ran 13-150 for one TD and Trey Wilkerson ran 12-109 for two scores. Jaden Weiser was 5/6 on PATs and kicked a 26-yard field goal. The offensive line was nearly impenitrable and only gave up eleven yards in tackles for loss. 

6A No. 2 Greenwood (1-1)

Head Coach: Rick Jones (296-73) - 15th Season. 

Last Season Record: 13-0

Last week: Pummeled Ft. Smith Southside 52-27. Peyton Holt racked up 482 yards by land and air for four total touchdowns.

Old Jail Museum is open Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Originally the Sebastian County Jail, this building was constructed in 1892 and is on the National Register of Historic Buildings. 305 East Center Street.

CPHS Football: No. 8 Sandites pummel No. 9 Putnam City 45-24

Warr Acres - Class 6A-II No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School (1-1) rolled into Putnam City Stadium looking for their first win of the season. They got it, and then some. The Sandites dominated No. 9 Putnam City High School 45-24 and led by as much as 35 points before sending in the backups.

Senior quarterback Caden Pennington had another impressive game with 9 completions for 169 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He threw passes to six different receivers, led by Braden Foster with two catches for 49 yards and Daren Hawkins with three catches for 43 yards and two touchdowns. Colten Roberts had one touchdown. 

Seven Sandites racked up yardage on the ground, led by Joel Mackey with 150 yards and a score on thirteen carries and Trey Wilkerson with 109 yards and two touchdowns on twelve carries. 

Hayden Cramer led the Sandite defense with double-digit tackles, including a forced fumble, while Brycen Peterman led on tackles for loss. 

The visitors wasted no time in getting on the board, marching eighty yards in seven plays and scoring on a six-yard pass from Pennington to Hawkins. Jaden Weiser's point-after kick was blocked, but Pennington made up for it with a two-point run after a 62-yard touchdown run by Mackey. 

The Pirates’ first possession was a quick three-and-out and the second ended in a fumble at the Sandite 38. Pennington found Justin Roe for 30 yards and Garrett McCallie ran for 28 more to land at the Pirate two-yard line. A holding call and a pair of incomplete passes later and Weiser got to kick his first field goal of the season from 26 yards.

Sand Springs took a 17-0 lead into the second quarter, but the Pirates finally hit pay dirt on a 27-yard field goal from Sam De La Pena.

Putnam forced the Sandites to punt and marched back down to  the Sandite 29 before once again fumbling the ball away to Peterman. Eleven plays later and Pennington hit Colten Roberts from seventeen yards out. Ty Rutledge recovered a fumble on the corresponding kick return and Pennington turned to Hawkins for a 25-yard score on the next play. Weiser's point-after kicks both sailed true and the Sandites took a 31-3 lead into the locker room.

The Pirates found their mojo on the opening drive of the second half, scoring on the sixth play with a 45-yard run from Keylhan Henderson. Julian DeLoera made the extra point to put it back at a three-score game. 

Sand Springs was equally ready for action, pummeling their way down to the two yard line where Wilkerson made his first score of the night. He scored again on their next drive ,this time from 42 yards out for the final Sand Springs points of the night.

Tyrece Romesburg scored a fourteen-yard keeper on the opening play of the fourth quarter, then threw a five-yard pass to Seth Wisby with seventeen seconds to play. 

Sand Springs will play the second leg of a three-week road series next Friday at 7:00 p.m. against Arkansas 6A No. 2 Greenwood (0-1). The Pirates will travel to 6A-II No. 3 Bixby High School (1-1). 

CPHS Football Preview: No. 8 Sandites at No. 9 Putnam City Pirates

Warr Acres - Charles Page High School will travel to Putnam City Stadium Thursday night for a non-district Class 6A-II football game against the Putnam Pirates. The Sandites are 0-1 against Putnam North, and 2-0 against Putnam West, but have never met the original Putnam City High School. The two will kick off at 7:00 p.m. as both look for their first win of the season.

6A-II No. 8 Sand Springs (0-1)

Head Coach: Dustin Kinard (60-61) - 12th Season.

Last Season Record: 5-6.

Last week: Defeated 41-28 by Texas 6A Mansfield Summit (1-0). Won second half 21-7. Converted seventeen first downs and lost ten yards to penalties. Caden Pennington threw 14-20-196-0 for two touchdowns, both to Jacob Snodgrass. Ran for 122 yards, led by Joel Mackey with fifteen carries for 97 yards and two scores. Mackey also averaged 30 yards on two kick returns. Jaden Weiser was 4/4 on extra points and freshman Brooks Dudley picked off the only interception of the game. 

6A-II No. 9 Putnam City (0-1)

Head Coach: Jon Garfield (0-1) - 1st Season.

Last Season Record: 7-4.

Last week: Shutout 33-0 by 6A-I Putnam North (1-0). Gave up nearly 100 yards in penalties, converted only nine first-downs. Gave up 177 yards by air and 193 on the ground. Threw two interceptions.
