CPHS Basketball: Sandites batter Bruins 61-40 on Homecoming, Richardson scores 28

The Class 6A No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (12-2, 4-2) picked up a 61-40 Frontier Valley Conference win over Bartlesville (1-9, 0-6) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, winning handily on Homecoming. University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior Davon Richardson led all scorers with a season-high 22 points and 15 rebounds for his third-straight double-double.

The Sandites were without 6’6” center Jaeden Hurd, who injured his knee two games prior, and struggled early on. They didn’t take their first lead till five minutes into the game. The Bruins ended the first quarter on an eight-point run, including back-to-back threes from Aodi Ayyaappan for a 14-8 advantage.

The Sandites blew their visitors away in the second quarter, going on an early thirteen-point streak. Shane Simpson broke up the run, but Richardson and Ethan Oakley combined for six more to take their first double-digit lead at 29-19. The Bruins ended the half with a three-point play from Chris Ward.

Marlo Fox and Cason Savage combined for seven to start the second half. Troy Reibel hit a three for the Bruins, then Richardson got hot and scored the home team’s next eight points. Josh Minney and Daren Hawkins also hit layups and entered the final stanza with a 48-28 lead.

Sand Springs had its biggest lead at 59-32. Jordan Carter made a three, Richardson dunked on a beautiful pass from Fox, then the visitors scored five-straight against the Sandite reserves to end the night.

McKenzie Harris was crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime of the varsity boys’ game. Richardson was Kissing Captain.

Sandite Basketball will take a week off before hosting Muskogee (3-7, 1-4) next Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. They have won four-straight meetings with the Roughers. Bartlesville will compete at the Deer Creek Tournament in Edmond this Thursday through Saturday.

CPHS Basketball: Richardson scores 22 in loss at No. 10 Broken Arrow

For the fourth time this season, the Class 6A No. 7 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (11-2, 3-2) had to play a top-ten ranked team in a conference match up, and this time they had to do it without 6’6” center Jaeden Hurd, who was out in a knee brace following an incident in their last outing.

The Sandites were unable to overcome extensive foul trouble and a season-worst free throw performance, falling 63-51 to No. 10 Broken Arrow (13-1, 5-0) Friday night on the road.

The Sandites took a 15-13 lead in the first quarter behind a seven-point performance from Davon Richardson. Richardson secured a double-double in the first half with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but the Tigers won the half 29-28.

The back-and-forth game continued through the third, with neither team gaining more than a two-point advantage. The teams entered the home stretch knotted up at 39-39, then the Tigers began to run away with it.

Sand Springs got called for fouls left and right, giving up 13 points at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter alone. Even Coach Eric Savage got called for a technical after Richardson scored through a foul and the refs called it on the floor and denied him the bucket. Marlo Fox, who averages 18 points per game, was held to a season-low nine after picking up four fouls by early in the third.

Richardson led all scorers with 22 points and 16 rebounds, but Josh Minney was the only other Sandite in double-digits, scoring 10. Only six Sandites made their way into the scorebook, while Broken Arrow had nine scorers. Ian Golden paced the Tigers with 20, followed by Anthony Allen with 10.

Sand Springs will look to get back in the win column Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. when they host Bartlesville (1-9, 0-5). Broken Arrow will host No. 6 Union (8-3, 3-2) Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Boys suffer first loss of the season, 57-53 to No. 8 Jenks

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (10-1, 2-1) suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House, falling 57-53 to No. 8 Jenks (7-1, 2-1) in conference action.

The Trojans stormed out to an early 17-8 lead behind a nine-point effort from Benjamin Averitt, but the home team came charging back for a 23-19 advantage to end the first quarter after a 10-1 run late down the stretch. Fox and Jaeden Hurd both had 6 points in the quarter and Cason Savage had 5.

Davon Richardson scored his sixth point to start the second quarter, but Trendon Tisdale hit two threes to sandwich a layup from Averitt for the 27-25 lead. Josh Minney tied it twice, once from the stripe and once in the paint, but the Trojans closed the half on a seven-point run to make it 37-29.

Jenks worked their way up to a nine-point lead midway through the third before Minney, Fox, and Richardson stole three-straight possessions to end the period 45-40.

Hurd and Savage put up two apiece to start the fourth, then Minney scored the go-ahead layup through contact. Nelson and Fox traded layups, then Hurd put up two to make 50-47. Ike Houston came up big for the visitors with back-to-back steals, dunking on one, then Averitt put them back out front. Savage had a bucket negated for charging, then picked up a fourth to put the Trojans in the bonus with 3:01 left to play.

Hurd made a traditional three for the lead, then Houston took it back and Averitt added a free throw at 55-53. Savage fouled out with 12.0 in the game and sent Houston to the line. The Trojan made both of his shots to end the game.

The Sandites out-fouled the Trojans 10-4 in the second half, and were only 1-of-15 from three-point range.

Averitt led all scorers with 17, followed by Nelson with 16 and Houston with 13. Fox and Hurd led the Sandites with 13 apiece, and Hurd was one rebound short of a double-double.

Sand Springs will return to action with another huge conference match-up next Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. against No.2 Booker T. Washington (7-2, 4-0). Jenks will travel to No. 20 Sapulpa (4-5, 1-2) Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
