CPHS Basketball: No. 10 Sandites hold off Bixby 60-42, Savage scores 31

Sand Springs - The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School Boys' Basketball Team (13-4, 6-3) overcame a feisty Bixby squad Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, pummeling their foes 19-7 in the final stanza after a relatively close affair.

Noah Love and Sam Hink scored on the Spartans’ opening possessions before Colt Savage got the Sandites on the board with a pair of free throws. Xavier Glenn scored one of his own, then Matt Price hit a three to tie it up. Hink got a putback on his own shot, but the Sandites rattled off seven-straight and never surrendered the lead. Glenn scored back-to-back to make it a one-point game, but Savage hit a buzzer beater for the 15-11 advantage.

Cale Savage scored his second three of the night to kick off the second period. Glenn and Richardson exchanged twos, then the Spartans cut it to 20-18 before Marlo Fox,  Cole Durkee, and Colt Savage scored back-to-back-to-back. Hink and Love combined for five, but once again Colt Savage had a buzzer-beater, this time a layup, to make it 28-23.

Colt Savage picked up where he left off in the second half, making a three-point play and a three-point field goal for the double-digit lead. Glenn cut it right back down with a three of his own, but Durkee was next up with a deep ball. Neither team scored back-to-back till Glenn sank a buzzer-beater three to make it 41-35.

Price scored two to start the final period, Hink retaliated, then Colt Savage scored five. Love and Brennan Breese tried to get the Spartans back in contention, cutting it to 48-40, but the Sandites ran away with it, only giving up one more basket for an eighteen-point win.

Colt Savage, a University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior, led all scorers with 31 points and was the only Sandite in the double digits. Hink and Glenn scored sixteen apiece for the visiting Spartans.

The Sandites will return to action Friday with a Highway 97 Rivalry rematch with No. 11 Sapulpa (12-6, 4-5), who they previously defeated 73-64 in week two. The Spartans will take on No. 8 Owasso (14-4, 6-3) and try to avenge a 72-46 season-opening loss.

6'4" sophomore Davon Richardson recorded fourteen points and fifteen rebounds Friday night, pacing the Sandites to a 44-34 victory over the Muskogee High School Roughers (7-10). Sand Springs took control of the game from there, ending the first period with five-straight. Kaunor Ashley started the second period with a two for the Roughers, but Cale Savage hit the first three for the Sandites then Colt Savage scored four and Richardson added two for a 19-14 advantage. The home team went back to their bread and butter with a layup from Parks, then Brian McVay scored two from the charity stripe and hit a layup to reclaim the lead before the half.

It didn’t last long, however, as McVay hit back-to-back jump shots to tie it at 27-27. Cale Savage had the final say, however, and Sand Springs started the final stanza up by two.

Richardson scored the first basket of the fourth period, Parks retaliated, then Haddock hit a deep three for the lead. CPHS Basketball: Bartlesville upsets No. 10 Sand Springs 59-52, Savage scores 20

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys' basketball team (11-4 overall, 4-3 conference) suffered their first upset of the season Tuesday night, falling 59-52 to unranked Bartlesville (6-10, 2-5). Previously the Sandites had only dropped games to top-five teams.

The Sandites pulled away from the Bruins only one time in the first quarter, briefly taking a 10-5 lead before Jaylin Oliver hit a three point basket. Cale Savage hit a three of his own, then DeAndre Young hit another tre for the Bruins. Davon Richardson scored in the paint, then Andrew Gronigan cut it to 15-14 to end the stanza.

Shane Simpson gave the home team their second lead of the game to start the second period, Colt Savage and Matthew Price scored back-to-back to make it 19-16, then Tayo Dina and Oliver scored back-to-back to reclaim the lead. Colt Savage put the Sandites back out front one last time, then Bartlesville ran the rest of the half by as much as 28-23 before Cale Savage hit a deep two before the end of the period.

Dina came out hot in the second half and scored from both two and three-point range. The teams traded blows throughout the period but neither got much of a run. The Sandites scored only five points, all from Colt Savage, and trailed 39-30 to start the fourth.

Things improved from there as Richardson and Cole Durkee scored back-to-back to open up the stanza. The Bruins still led 46-38 with 3:35 to play when Bilger fouled out. Richardson and Colt Savage both scored free throws, Dina hit a two, then Savage scored his first three of the night for the closest score of the second half, 48-44, with 1:50 to play. That was as close as it would get.

Dina made a three-point play, then Dina and Oliver both added two apiece from the stripe to put the game in the bag. Jonathan Quier came in and scored three off a rebound, Dina added two more, Gage Fisher scored three, Oliver scored two more, then Josh Minney posted the last points of the night for Sand Springs.

Dina led all scorers with 22 points, twenty of which came in the second half. Colt Savage scored twenty for Sand Springs. Richardson and Oliver had thirteen apiece for their teams.

Sand Springs will look to get back on track with a road game at Muskogee (7-9, 4-3) this Friday. The Roughers are coming off a 68-62 upset win over No. 9 Sapulpa (12-4, 4-3). Bartlesville will look to repeat their success at Bixby (6-10, 1-6) this Friday.

CPHS Basketball: Boys fall 62-53 to No. 1 Broken Arrow, Savage scores 16

Class 6A No. 1 ranked Broken Arrow High School (11-1, 6-0) was caught off guard when they rolled into the Ed Dubie Field House as the No. 9 Sandites (11-3, 4-2) jumped out to a 19-8 first quarter lead. Unfortunately for Charles Page High School, the Tigers didn't get the top rank by being unable to adapt.

Throttling the Sandites 16-2 in the second quarter, the Tigers never trailed in the second half, but Sand Springs was constantly nipping at their heels.

Camryn Dennis scored first for the Tigers, but Davon Richardson tied it up and Cole Durkee drilled a three for a lead that would last for most of the half. Colt Savage and Matthew Price also got in on the action and Durkee led the way with nine points for a 19-8 first quarter beat down.

The second quarter was a far bigger beat down, but for the visitors. Braden Boyer and Joshua Robinson cut it to 19-12, Colt Savage hit a two, then Broken Arrow rattled off fourteen points straight for a 26-21 halftime advantage.

The third quarter also went heavily to the visitors, who pushed their advantage to double digits and led 44-32 to start the final stanza. Sand Springs won the final quarter, but not by enough.

Broken Arrow led by as much as fourteen and the Sandites cut it as close as seven, but every time the host team tried to battle back, the visitors jumped back out front.

Dennis led all scorers with twenty points, followed by Robinson with seventeen. Boyer contributed fourteen to put three Tigers in double digits. Colt Savage led the Sandites with sixteen, followed by Cale Savage with twelve and Richardson with ten.

The Sandites remain third in Frontier Valley Conference standings behind Broken Arrow and No. 7 Union (9-3, 5-1). Sand Springs will take a week off before traveling to Bartlesville (4-8, 1-5) next Tuesday. The Tigers will travel to the John Nobles Invitational in Moore on Thursday and will play 5A Durant (1-10) in the first round.
