CPHS Basketball: Sandites survive Muskogee, Armstead scores 27
/The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (4-2) survived a feisty Muskogee team Tuesday evening on the road and improved to 2-0 in Frontier Valley Conference action with the 54-49 win. Journey Armstead scored a season-high 27 points with 8 rebounds, followed by Hailey Jackson with a career-best 16 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year.
The Lady Sandites have now won seven consecutive meetings with the Roughers, dating back to 2016. Three of those games were won by 30 or more points, and all were double-digit wins till Tuesday. Tuesday looked to be going in that same direction as the visiting Sandites led by as much as 20-7 late in the first quarter.
Jackson scored the opening bucket and the visitors never trailed, but they did let the Roughers tie it five times. Akira Eubanks tied it at 5-5 early in the first quarter, but Armstead made a three-point play to kick off a 13-point run for their biggest lead at 18-5.
The home team rallied to outscore Sand Springs 15-6 in the second quarter, however, and tied it at 47-47 midway through the fourth before the Sandites closed out on a 7-2 run.
Eubanks led the Roughers with 13 points followed by Denym Sanders with with 11. Seven Roughers made their way into the scorebook, as opposed to only four for the visitors. The Sandites played their fourth-straight game without 6’2” starter Layne Kirkendoll but still managed to win the rebound battle. Muskogee earned the most takeaways, however, which is a rarity for any team against the Sandites’ defensive stars.
The game was the last of 2020 for Sand Springs, who will travel to No. 8 Bixby (3-1, 1-0) on January 5th. Muskogee (1-4, 0-2) will look for their first conference win on January 5th at No. 16 Jenks (4-2, 2-1). Sand Springs and Muskogee have a rematch scheduled for February 9th.
