CPHS Basketball: Sandites fall 64-43 to No. 11 Bixby, Armstead scores 16

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Bixby High School girls’ basketball team (11-6, 5-3) won their seventh-straight game Friday night at the Whitey Ford Sports Complex, 64-43 against Frontier Valley Conference foe No. 10 Charles Page High School (12-4, 5-3) from Sand Springs.

The Spartans out-shot and out-rebounded the Sandites, and had more contributors in the scorebook. Sandite sophomore Journey Armstead led all scorers with 16 points, but Hailey Jackson was the only other Sandite in double-digits with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Bixby had three double-digit scorers: Gracy Wernli posted 15, Deonna Owens scored 11, and Alyssa Nielson added 10.

Wernli kicked off the game with a three for the Spartans, but Madison Burris and Armstead made threes of their own and the Sandites stayed out front till a nine-point run from the home team made it 14-8. Leyshia Morris added another three and Darrian Jordan scored a traditional three to end the quarter down 16-14.

Morris tied it up to start the second quarter and Raegan Padilla and Sophia Regalado added buckets for the lead. After falling behind 21-18 Bixby got hot and ended the half on a 17-5 run, with Wernli’s 13 points leading all scorers.

The Spartans continued to run away with things in the third period, outscoring their guests 19-8 with three threes for a 54-34 advantage, and neither team made any real headway in the final quarter.

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a Highway 97 Rivalry road game at No. 8 Sapulpa (14-3, 7-1). Bixby will travel to Owasso (4-13, 2-6) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
