CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites rout Bartlesville 63-31 on Homecoming, Armstead scores 20

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (11-3, 4-2) handily won their fourth-straight meeting with Bartlesville (5-5, 2-3) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, beating their Frontier Valley Conference foe 63-31 on Homecoming behind a 20-point effort from sophomore standout Journey Armstead.

Armstead led all scorers with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks. Hailey Jackson had 11 points and Darrian Jordan scored 10 to put three Sandites in double digits. Chloe Martin scored 11 to pace the Bruins.

The first quarter was the Martin show as the Bruin scored her team’s first eight points and the visitors led for much of the period before the Sandites kicked it in gear and scored ten-straight. Jackson scored four from the charity stripe to reclaim the lead at 3:20, then Bayleigh Cheney sank a three and Jordan laid up for the 14-8 advantage. Mary Cone broke up the run with a three, but Cheney added two more from the stripe and Armstead hit a three to end the quarter at 19-11.

T’Keitha Valentine made a three to start the second quarter and the Bruins hung tight till the final three minutes when Armstead scored six in a row, including a four-point play for their first double-digit lead with 2:30 in the half. The visitors were hampered by fouls and even Head Coach Donnie Martin earned a technical, contributing to a ten-point run by the Sandites to end the half. The Bruins had 17 fouls at the half, compared to six from Sand Springs, and the Sandites were 14-of-17 at the free throw line for a 34-19 advantage.

Jackson missed most of the third quarter after drawing her fourth foul a minute in, but the deep Sandite bench didn’t miss her. Sand Springs held the Bruins to only four points in the third quarter, and Armstead hit a three at the end of the quarter to double the visitors at 46-23.

Armstead doubled the Bruins again at 56-28 with 3:42 to play after scoring her 20th point. She also recorded assists on the baskets that put Jackson and Jordan in double digits. Fayth Walker entered the game with two minutes remaining and was three-for-three with seven points.

Sand Springs Basketball will take a week off before hosting Muskogee (3-8, 0-5) next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. They have won five-straight meetings with the Lady Roughers. Bartlesville will compete at the Carl Albert Invitational in Midwest City beginning this Thursday.
