CPHS Basketball: Armstead scores 31, girls beat Jenks 56-46

The Class 6A No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (9-2, 2-1) is quickly building a reputation as a team that can come back from anything. Just three days after erasing a 15-point fourth quarter deficit against Ponca City, they came back from a 12-point second quarter deficit against Jenks for a 56-46 Frontier Valley Conference win over the No. 17 ranked Lady Trojans (5-3, 1-2) . Sophomore standout Journey Armstead led all scorers with a career-high 31 points.

The Lady Sandites started strong with baskets from Armstead and Hailey Jackson for a 6-4 lead, but the Trojans ended the quarter on an eleven point run. Madison Burris kicked off the second period with two, but Bri Johnson quickly retaliated with five for their biggest lead at 20-8.

Sand Springs won the rest of the second period 13-2, with a seven point run before Johnson hit a two. Bayleigh Cheney put up back-to-back threes to end the period. She also had back-to-back threes in the comeback effort against Ponca.

Lean Morris had the opening points of the second half, but Armstead hit a quick three to tie it up at 24-24. Morris and Jackson traded blows, then Armstead sank two from the charity stripe for the home team’s first lead since early in the first quarter. Armstead stayed hot throughout the period and scored her team’s final eight points of the quarter. They would not trail again.

Armstead ended the third quarter with a buzzer-beater three, then scored a pair of twos before assisting Jackson for a 46-31 advantage. The Sandites had their biggest lead at 54-37, and Armstead scored her 30th and 31st points from the free throw line with 1:30 to play before the third string finished out the game.

Sand Springs will return to action next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference home game against No. 1 Booker T. Washington (9-0, 3-0). Jenks will travel to No. 8 Sapulpa (4-2, 2-1) next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
