CPHS Football Rewind: 2019 sees improved defense and young but talented offense

The Charles Page High School varsity football team ended their season in a 34-7 loss to No. 5 Booker T. Washington Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

The Sandites closed out the year with the No. 13 ranking in the 16-team Class 6A-II. They were 2-8 overall and 1-6 in district action, their worst marks since 2010 when they were 1-9, 1-6.

The team’s 163 points scored were their fewest since 2004, when they put up 161 in an 0-10 campaign. Their 382 points allowed were the most since that same season.

The team failed to make the playoffs for the second straight year.

The season had its high points. Daren Hawkins snapped a 33-game scoreless dry spell for the Sandite defense, scoring on an 83-yard pick six. The defense also snapped a 37-game streak without a shutout. The team came up with fourteen turnovers this year, compared to eight in 2018. They also matched last season’s tackles for loss, sacks, and pass breakups.

The team is also only graduating a handful of impact players and will return a lot of experience.

The senior class only accounted for 20% of the team’s passing yardage, 37% of receiving yards, 28% of rushing yards, 29% of kick return yards, 37% of tackles, 15% of tackles for loss, 13% of sacks, and 18% of turnovers.

The biggest losses will be Jerret Haley at defensive back, Jacob Snodgrass at wide receiver, and linemen Riley Magee and Josh Fincannon.

Recap

The Sandites kicked off the season with a 41-7 loss to Mansfield Summit High School, who is 7-3 and headed to the Texas 6A playoffs. The game marked the second installment of what organizers hope to be an annual Border Brawl between the Mansfield School District’s five high school, and the Frontier Valley Conference teams based around Tulsa.

The team bounced back against Putnam City (1-9) with a 35-0 shutout. Pennington earned his first career start and was 13-21-184-0 with four touchdowns. Game three was another loss, 50-20 to Greenwood (9-1), the No. 1 team in Arkansas 6A who is looking for their third-straight State title.

Sand Springs picked up their second and final win of the year on Homecoming, 21-19 against Shawnee. Although the Wolves only ended the season 2-8, one of those wins was an upset of undefeated eventual District Runner-Up Muskogee.

The Sandites ended the year on a six-game losing streak 54-6 to Muskogee (8-2), 54-34 to Bartlesville (3-7), 24-14 to Ponca City (5-5), 75-0 to Bixby (10-0), 31-19 to Sapulpa (6-4), and 34-7 to Washington (6-4).

Of the eight teams to beat the Sandites, only one ended the year with a losing record, and only two failed to make the playoffs.
