CPHS Football Preview: Sandites host Ponca City Thursday
/With only four games left in the regular season, it’s do or die time for the Class 6A-II No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (2-4, 1-2.) The Sandites will host No. 11 Ponca City (3-3, 1-2) Thursday in a crucial district toss-up game. The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The 6,700-seat stadium was built in 2007 and is located at 600 North Adams Road on the high school campus. Parking is primarily located at the high school on the south side of the stadium, with overflow on the practice field north of the stadium. General Admission tickets are $7.00, or $5.00 for students and senior citizens.

The Programs
Sand Springs is coming off a 3-7 season but prior to that was riding a program-best six straight years of playoff appearances. They are 65-71 (.478) under thirteenth-year head coach Dustin Kinard. The Sandites own one gold ball, from 1966, and made their last State Finals appearance in 2015.
Ponca City went 0-10 last year under first-year head coach Scott Harmon (130-72). The Wildcats have never won a State title, and haven’t made the playoffs since 2005, which was also their last winning season.
Sand Spring leads the all-time series with Ponca 26-18-1 and the Sandites have won twelve of the last thirteen meetings. Ponca hasn’t beaten Sand Springs since 2011, and they haven’t won at Memorial Stadium since 2005.

The Sandites rolled to a 35-14 win over Ponca last season, with both Wildcat touchdowns coming in the final seconds of the halves. Caden Pennington was 14-22-165-1 with touchdown passes to Jacob Snodgrass and Justin Roe. He also ran for 64 yards and two more TDs, with Trey Wilkerson running in the fifth on an 8-75 performance. Jaden Weiser was five-of-five kicking PATs. Justin Andrews was 6-18-98-0 for Ponca and scored both Wildcat touchdowns on short runs.

The Sandites average 5.8 yards per pass attempt, 11.7 yards per completion, 3.3 yards per carry, and 4.5 yards per play. They convert on 37% of third down attempts and 54% of fourth downs. They score on 26% of possessions and 64% of red zone penetrations, and are 0-for-3 on two-point plays.
The Sandite Defense has held its foes to 7.5 yards per pass, 12.9 yards per completion, 4.5 yards per carry, and 5.7 yards per play. Ponca needs just one more win to secure its best record since 2005. They own the No. 15 offense, No. 13 scoring defense, and No. 6 defense in points allowed. They have the No. 12 margin of victory in Class 6A-II. The team has been stout on defense, but struggled offensively, especially since losing their starting quarterback, Justin Andrews, in week 3. It’s unknown if Andrews will return to action against Sand Springs, or if Kyter Welch will get the start.
