CPHS Volleyball: Defending State Champs spoil undefeated Sandite home streak
/The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (16-12) held the longest home winning streak in the division coming into their Thursday night match against 5A No. 4 Bishop Kelley (15-10). They amassed a 10-0 record over six weeks at the Ed Dubie Field House before falling 3-0 to the defending 5A State Champions. The only other 6A teams yet to lose on their home court are No. 4 Norman North (19-8 overall, 8-0 home) and No. 3 Edmond Memorial (20-5, 5-0).
Bishop Kelley took an early 4-0 lead against a passive home team, but the Sandites soon woke up and made things competitive as their visitors struggled with accuracy. Comet misfires coupled with kills from Vanessa Wyrick and Devree Youngblood tied it at 6-6 and 8-8 before the home team jumped out to an 11-9 lead with kills from Youngblood and McKenzie Harris. Caitlin Ozment and Eleanor Percy combined on a block to tie it at 11-11, and the Comets quickly ran away with it. The home team only scored three more points on their own merit and Kelley ended on a 9-1 run for the win.
Sand Springs took a 4-2 lead in game two, entirely on Comet errors, before giving up a five-point run. They trailed the Comets for the entire set but kept the visitors on their toes, cutting it as close as 23-21 before giving up the loss.
The Comets streaked past the Sandites in game three in the only blowout set of the night. Sand Springs led twice early on before the visitors went on an insurmountable twelve-point run to make it 16-6. Sand Springs had a five-point run late in the set with a pair of kills from Payton Robbins, but the match was too far gone by that point.
Youngblood, an Oklahoma Baptist University-commit, led the Sandites with 11 kills and had 7 digs. Madison Blaylock and Raylynn Mong had a team-high 8 digs, and Mong led in assists with 9. Ozment led the Comets with 13 kills, closely followed by Reese Simpler with 10.
Sand Springs will return to conference action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a home match against No. 9 Owasso (14-12). The Comets will also host Owasso, Monday at 6:00 p.m.
