CPHS Baseball: Sandites end season with 22-11 record, six headed to college programs

The Charles Page High School baseball team finished their season Thursday afternoon in Owasso as the host Rams (34-5) won their eleventh shutout of the season and fifth-straight Regional Championship.

Owasso went 3-0 in the playoff, outscoring their opponents 19-0 for their 33rd Regional title. They scored runs in each of the first four innings and held on for a 7-0 victory. Sand Springs was held to a season-low two hits, and committed a season-high seven errors.

Jaxon Skaggs (3-2) got the start and the loss on the mound, throwing seven hits, three strikeouts, and three walks in four innings. Sebastian Cassity (4-3) threw one strikeout, no walks, and no hits in one inning of relief. Kiefer Massey (1-0) finished the game with one strikeout, no walks, and no hits in two innings.

The Sandites ended the season with an identical win-percentage to last year, going 22-11 overall, and improved from 7-5 to 8-4 in district action. Second-year Head Coach James Garrison is now 46-23 at Sand Springs and 60-42 in his career.

Offensively they averaged 5.88 runs per game, a slight dip from last season, but only allowed 3.39 runs per game, their lowest since 2012. Their 2.49 average margin of victory is also their best since 2012.

The 8-4 district record and 8-2 home record were the team’s best since 2015. They notched six shutout wins for the third-straight year, and suffered only two shutouts for the second straight year. Their longest win streak was six-straight, and they never lost more than two games in a row. Every team the Sandites lost to ended the season with a winning record.

Seminole State College-signee Cal Watkins led the Sandite offense in most statistical categories, including: batting average (.400), slugging average (.514), runs (27), hits (42), singles (30), doubles (11), RBI (29), and stolen bases (26). He also went 1-1 on the mound and recorded two saves.

Jacob Snodgrass led the team with two triples, and was one of only two players to hit a home run. Cale Savage hit a team-high two homers and was in on 23 double plays. Ethan Sartin had the best on-base percentage on the team at .469.

The Sandite bullpen was thirteen-deep this year, but only seven players logged ten innings or more. Ben Banker was the workhorse, throwing nearly fifty innings for a 6-2 record, 1.87 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, and a team-high 39 strikeouts.

John Miller (2-1) was right behind Banker with 32 strikeouts in only 26 innings. He also recorded two saves on the season. Massey had the team-best ERA at 0.70 and WHIP at 1.30, but only threw ten innings this year. Seth Villines (4-0) had the best overall record, and the best ERA (1.69) and WHIP (1.31) among pitchers who threw more than ten innings.

Six Sandites have signed letters of intent to continue their careers at the collegiate level. Tyler Ash, John Miller, and Banker are headed to Eastern Oklahoma State College. Kyler Copeland will play for College of the Ozarks, and Cale Savage will play at Northern Oklahoma College at Enid.
